View Full Version : Rising Sun Rally Run- Chinaman Gulch August 9

Date: August 9, 2009
Meeting Time: 9:00am and depart at 9:30
Meeting Location: Gunsmoke Truck Stop in Johnson Village Hwy.285

This trail is rated difficult by the Wells guide book, the rockiest part of the trail is within the first half mile. Chinaman Gulch is narrow and sandy with isolated rock obstacles. The trail is better suited for modified vehicles with lockers and skid plates. The trail is 7.3 miles long and can be ran in 3 or 4 hours but spending all day on the trail is not uncommon due to breakage or traffic. Please bring plenty of food, water and personal gear as we are in the Colorado high country and weather changes quickly. We will run ham frequency 146.460 and cb channel 4, I will also monitor the Colorado Connection repeater system before we hit the trail head.
Please post up if your in or have any questions :thumb:

Just did it last weekend, loved it, count us in. Some of the bigger obstacles that don't have bypasses like the waterfall have gotten pretty dug out at the base. I would suggest a minimum of 33's and rear locker to be safe.

I'm in.

Robbie should have my Front ARB and 4.56 gears installed by then. I just had Oleg replace my steering rack, tie rods, ball joints and a-arm bushings in the front. Plus, I am installed the shorter Tokico front shocks to limit droop and prevent breakage with the front locker - so hopefully it will be a successful break in run for me.

Good. You should be ready for whales tail then! Front locker is where its at for that obstacle.

Crossing my fingers that the truck will be ready to roll by then. If so, I'd love to go.

You're correct I could actually tackle the left line on whale rock for once. But, probable not on this break in run.

We hadn't planned on camping since we would have to go to the rally Saturday then leave in the afternoon to get to BV to spend Sat evening there. From our house it takes 2.5 hours to get to the parking area towing the trailer so we usually just leave about 7 am and come home the same evening.

Ah...That sucks!!! Dang it.

Looks like someone got the rock with a big tire and pushed it over, or else they did it with shovels and the like....Bummer.

My editor at the newspaper wants to know if anyone would have a seat available for a photographer from the paper to go on this run and take photos of rigs in action?

any extra seats?? I am a first time poster, but a long time lurker on this site. I went to Cruise Moab in 2003 with my 4Runner. Unfortunately, I had to sell my 4Runner and later my LX450 w/lockers. I have the 4x4 bug again and want to do some trail riding. Does anyone have any extra seat or two for me and my son on this run? I can pitch in some gas money or food or liquid refreshments too:beer::beer:, Thanks

You'll do fine with that rig as long as you take the easier lines. My daughter runs this trail all of the time with a Jeep XJ running 33's and a rear locker only. She has no armor or sliders.

Air Randy

Theres only a few obstacles on this trail that don't have a bypass or easier line, and you'll be able to handle them fine with your rig. There will be lots of experienced people there to spot you and give advice on which line you should take.

i found a arb front bumper and siders for 1500 on craigslist is good price? but they are for 93 is hard to fit those on my 95?

Romer

This is what Iwould do since you have the lift and tires in order of priority for this trail

Sliders - I have the Slee step sliders and like them much better compared to the tubesliders on my daugfhters truck

Slee Xcase Skid Plate

I would not run Chinamans without the above two items

Next I would get a bumper. I like the ARB because of the bars on top which saved my truck when another car hit it. I know a guy who hit a dear on the highway and suffered no damage. Get the one for the winch and you can always get a winch later. Enough people in the club have winches so you can wait on this. Some like the short bus bumper better though. Its a personal preference thing.

The AC Dryer skid plate. I ran for two years without one, but Nay here was behind me and smacked his AC Dryer and had no AC. Expensive to fix, skid plate is cheap. You can also relocate the AC Dryer and move it up out of the way.

A Tow strap and two D Rings. This will get you out of most places as long as there is another truck there.

An air compressor of CO2 setup

This will bring you up to the amount you have

If you want to spend a few more bucks, a Slee rear bumper and then your set for almost anything.

My 2 cents

I think the 93 and 94 are different

Slee Step sliders new are $935 and an ARB winch Bumper is $874

If I can get all the stuff I need to take care of done, I may make this run.

I have a guy who works for me who has a Jeep. He is a really good guy, not sure he would be welcome on a rally run.

Trail Leader?
