View Full Version : Holy Cross anyone?

Air Randy

We now have a plan for Holy Cross. This will be a joint run by Colorado Land Cruisers and the Rising Sun clubs. Some folks are going up Friday night the 11th to camp and some are planning to camp Saturday night too.

The wheeling will be on Saturday the 12th. We want to be on the trail by 9:00 AM to beat the crowds.. Maybe Start Staging and Airing Down at 8:30 at the Trail Head.

Trevor, can you post up directions to the trailhead where everyone should meet?

We can pick any weekend in August that doesn't conflict with other runs already planned.

Good luck with that!

I've always wanted to run this trail. Maybe mid-September? Is that too late?

Generally no, not too late - of course this year it will be different...

We elk hunt up there and it often is warm and dry well into second season. Except when it blizzards and isn't. While unpredictable in mid September, the odds are in your favor.

Plus you may be in the rut if late enough and get some unexpected audible treats, you never know. Might see a bow hunter/ black powder hunter or two, but they likely will be higher up and in the Wilderness.

Might there be a 2nd annual running with the CLC? Last year's run was around 9/20 and it was perfect.

I'm game. I've never run it and I hear it's one of the most beautiful areas in CO. I can't imagine what it looks like after all the moisture we've had this year.

Why don't we set a tentative target date of Aug 29-30? I'm assuming most people would prefer to go wheeling on Sunday the 30th? I've never been to the area, should we plan a Saturday night camp out for those who can and Sunday wheeling for whomever shows up?

Lets see what kind of response we get for that date. We can always move to another date if needed. Who knows this trail that can lead the run?

Ah, if only it was transferable... ! We'd have a fine time for sure! My wife is making noise about not going as well. I am making severe frowny faces in her general direction. We all know how effective those are... at the OPPOSITE GOAL from what we usually want.

Something about too many wedding plans in October... sheesh, how hard could it be?
:bolt:

This is the bachelor party I paid for though... don't even think about it Mr. Squishy... If you think I am a hardbutt just wait until week 3 of the marriage!! :lmao:

I am good with Sept. 19-20th, that is the day before I have my knee replaced. A little wheeling before major surgery should do me some good.

If other dates come up we may be able to go, I know we are out August 28-30th

If we wait for everybody to come up with a date we'll never end up going. SO pick a few and we can vote.

PS Randy, Check the Cumin's forum. I was looking how to fix my Sirius problem and a guy linked me to your post. Pretty nice write up only problem is I can not find a antenna anywhere except eBay. Might have one at Ultimate but $50.00

thanks for the info. :thumb:

I would like to tag along on the Mid-September ride if my 40 is up to the task. Just completing a wheelbase stretch/FJ60 axle swap and it should be on the road this weekend. Hopefully a month will be long enough to get the bugs worked out. Fingers crossed.

This is a great trail, but French Creek is where i re-arranged the sheet metal on the rear of my 4runner last year.... just watch the line to the right by the wall

Saturday the 12th Sound good, and im thinking 9:00 AM on the trail to beat the crowds.. Maybe Start Staging and Airing Down at 8:30 at the Trail Head.

I'm out of town and dont get back to Denver until Friday the 11th so were probably just going up and back on Saturday. Is anyone interested in meeting at the Starbucks in Downieville, exit 234, the convoying up the rest of the way?

Here are the directions to the trailhead from traildamage.com, can anyone confirm these are correct?

Take I-70 to exit 171 marked U.S. 24. Just after the Hornsilver Campground turn right on 703. You will see signs to Blodgett Campground and Homestake Reservoir. The trail is about 9 miles down 703 on the right marked FS 759. It is just past the Gold Park Forest Service Campground.

Alternatively, you can drive north from Leadville on U.S. 24 past Camp Hale. Turn left on 703 just past some switchbacks.
