View Full Version : 40's Only Run

MDH33

Who:

FJ40 Owners!

What:

Just what it says, a run for Only FJ40's!:zilla:

When:

Saturday September 26. Meet at 8:30 in the Staples/Margaritas parking lot in Conifer/Aspen Park off 285. This is a little further up the road past the King Soopers area. The Exit is right when you see the Bradley/Sinclair gas station.

Where:

Georgia Pass, Glacier Ridge, Middle Fork of the Swan, maybe Webster (?) or anywhere else we decide to go - there's a lot of trails in the area.

Why:

Because there aren't enough 40's on the trail anymore and all our club runs are crowded with 80's, 100's, FJCruisers and other assorted luxury rigs. :p: Plus it's fun to wheel with a bunch of old-school rigs once in awhile. ;)

How:

Dust off your 40, add some oil, grab your tool bag, spares, lunch, a jacket and let's go.

This is the third annual Rising Sun "40's Only Run". The plan is to meet up in Conifer and head down to Jefferson along 285. We'll head up Georgia Pass and explore some of the trails. These trails should be mellow for any stock FJ40. There a lot of routes we can take, but we can decide depending on the rigs that show up. I hope all the 40 owners can make it. If you don't have a 40, you're welcome to ride along. :)

How much of this is road vs trail and how muc of the trail riding is doable in a very stock 40 that isn't lifted or have big tires?

A stock 40 will have no problem. As for the route, I haven't nailed down the specifics yet, but ideally we would do a loop that begins and ends on 285. However, if someone needed to exit via I-70, that would be possible as well.

Hope you can make it. :thumb:

It's always a good idea to have a CB on club trail runs. Even better, get a HAM :yagi:

I highly recommend this unit for a 40.

http://www.walcottcb.com/uniden-pro520xl-compact-cb-radio-with-pa-jack-p-532.html?cPath=340_377

It sounds good, it's cheap and it's small. Takes 20 minutes to install and that's only if you're persnickety about how carefully you route the wires to your battery. I've ordered a bunch from WalcottCB, good site. I also have purchased stuff from Radio Service Center on Sheridan.

Plenty of time to get something purchased and installed. However, if you don't get something before the run, that's ok too.

Seems like you almost have to have a HAM and a CB given that people in the club use both. Is that your experience?

It sure seems like the club is moving in the direction where HAMS outnumber CB's on trail runs. I have both in my 40 now. :)

I installed ham first, and installed the CB a month or so ago. The Uniden 510xl is the model just below what Martin and Matt have - it is less than $35 with free shipping (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=uniden+510xl&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=3503385765&ref=pd_sl_8lgaxt2n3d_e) at Amazon. I picked up the antenna, cable and mount at Radio Service Center along with a SWR meter. Installation and tuning was very straigtforward. You can easily get this done between now and the run.

Either way the cost for good equipment and a solid installation will be close to the same. That is to say a solid radio (2 meter ham or CB) that will last many years in harsh environments will be about $120-150 initial investment. I went with the cheap CB knowing that in all likelihood it will break after a couple of years.

If this is a one or the other type of decision, I would recommend you go ham. Getting licensed is a fairly straight forward process. There is an exam next Wednesday night at Front Range Community College in Westminster. :thumb:

Steve,
The crack was probably started quite a while back but took till now to crack far enough to peel the perch away. It happens! Clean the metal with a wire brush, use a narrow grinding disc to make a "ditch" along the entire crack and weld it back together. When welding only weld about an inch at a time. Move to a differant place and do the same. The goal is to not over case harden the whole damage zone which simply create more places for cracks to happen. If possible add a gusset or scab plate. Check the other perches too very close as there is a good possibility there might be more hidden cracks.

x2

When I cut my rear xmember out and put in the new one, I found a spot that had rusted and then cracked in the frame.

I did almost exactly as UB recommended, but, since I made the ditch and then fill-welded the crack, I had plenty of weld in line with the metal. I ground what little weld stuck up smooth, and then plated over with a piece of 3/16" plated in a diamond shape.

I was trying to climb out of French Creek on the Holy Cross run when I heard a pop sound, next thing I know someone outside the rig brought it to my attention. The crack is on the passenger rear where the front of the leaf spring meets the frame.

I'm tempted to make the run this year, read about last years run and wished I had gone. It has been years since my 40 has hauled me to the hills, but I have been weeding out the trouble spots on it the last two years and want to give it a try.
I'm not a member, not lifted, not locked, no power steering, no top, fairly experienced, know my limitations. '70, 2F, 4 speed.
I'm tempted to see if the ol' 40 can make it up the hill, offroad doesn't scare me, on highway does a little bit.
Can I come?
What else would I need, besides what is listed in the invite?

P.S. I can add BLUE to the M&M colors scheme.

I'm not really sure, I think I was looking at clubs in the area and the Colorado Springs club web page was and is dead (any idea why?) so I went to the rising sun to see what was going on. I just happened to look at the yellow box on the main page "Recently in the rising sun forums" and BAM...there it was.

I have some muffler work to do on the FJ40, but I'm sure I can get er done before Saturday...You would not imagine what I've done just to get to the muffler work......well if you have an FJ40 then you might know!?

Just a note, if you're driving from the Springs, it will take you about 2 hours to get to the meeting spot in Conifer if you drive I-25 to 470 to 285. If you have a HAM/CB in your rig, we'll be on Simplex 146.460 and CB channel 4. I'll also monitor the Denver and Breck CCR's. See you Saturday.

Just a note to everyone: It's snowing up here in Evergreen right now and yesterday as I drove through Fairplay and Jefferson, all the mountains were topped with snow as well. It could be a wet, cold, snowy day, so bring the appropriate gear. The trails we will be on are fairly high elevation and exposed in some places. Hopefully things will change by the end of the week and we'll have a nice, clear, sunny day, but be prepared. :thumb:

Well, I have about 6 inches of heavy wet snow in my yard and on the trees right now, so it may be a snow run. I imagine a lot more at higher elevation. But who can say, this IS Colorado. It might be 80 and sunny Saturday. ;)

But as you mentioned I the forum is still active...I will try and post some questions...

I will put the radio on 146.460, might have to go with the HT, the 40 is not setup for an external antenna yet (might be able to make a bracket and mount the 1/4 wave to the HT, give it a little more kick)., was gona put the "Outbacker" on it and maybe get some HF out of it also...but time is getting short....thanks for the info...

It depends on how quickly I can get my cruiser to idle. Should be taken care of in the next day or two. Either way I think I have time to get it all handled.

I'm in. Got my cruiser to idle. (Thanks to Dmaddox) Nothing that a FJ60 coil, dizzy (had a points dizzy in it), carb, and fuel pump can't fix. Now I'm getting a muffler put on it so I don't inhale exhaust as I drive and I'm golden.

Marco,

Just remember you can't transmit while it is plugged in...You can receive, but not transmit, or so the directions say as I've never actually tried it.

That said, a fully charged battery in a VX-7R will last ~2 days with typical transmitting...I charged mine before the GTR, used it on the drive down for 4+ hours including chats with you, used it all day on Saturday, and then most of Sunday. It finally died somewhere between Johnson Village and Bailey on the drive home.

Yeah, we have transmitted with it plugged in too! It got hot though....

I just totally spaced and realized I had a charger at home.. i'll just charge it up there. I was worried because Art had my car charger from the GTR and for some reason I thought I couldn't charge it without it!

I'll just use the wall wart for it.. again, for some reason I forgot I had it.

This Weekend! :headbang:

Saturday September 26. Meet at 8:30 (we roll at 9:00) in the Staples/Checkers/Margaritas parking lot in Conifer/Aspen Park off 285. This is a little further up the road past the King Soopers area. The Exit is right when you see the Bradley/Sinclair gas station which is on the right if you're driving West up the hill.

I'll be monitoring 146.460 and the CCR repeaters if you have HAM, or channel 4 if you have CB. (hopefully you all have one or the other or both).

Right now the plan is to go up Georgia Pass, down the South Fork of the Swan, then a loop on the North and Middle Forks. We'll head over to breck, then return to 285 over Boreas Pass. I have no idea how much snow there will be, but if it's deep, we likely won't be able to loop the North and Middle forks, which means we can head over to Montezuma and I-70 via the Saints John trail, or retrace our steps back to Tiger road. We'll play it as we see it. The weather is supposed to be nice, but it will be cold up there, so bring appropriate gear. It could be a long day with so many rigs, so bring food, water, etc.

We'll play it as we see it. The weather is supposed to be nice, but it will be cold up there, so bring appropriate gear. It could be a long day with so many rigs, so bring food, water, etc.

Trip update...the 40s hit snow and are breaking drifts now.

:insert 80s are better in snow comment here: :lmao:

Looks like they are 3 miles from Deer Creek.

I made it home safely. Turned around about 12:30, did not want to push Ty or the 40 too much. Was great to see 17 FJ40's all at once!

I made it home too, barely. The 40 ran hot all the way home and certainly seemed to lack some power that it had before. I hope nothing is toast in the guts but we'll see. Cross your fingers. If I don't drive it to the October meeting, you will know why.

Thanks trip everyone. It was a great time. Time to sleep now, I've earned it tonight.

so what's the story with the paint on Ricardo's truck? I've been gone for 2 weeks...

How did Jacket's 40 do with the shifting and all?

I'll let Bluebell answer the first question, but mine shifted like a dream on the trails - never popped out of gear, never got stuck in or out of gear. I'm very pleased.
