View Full Version : Silly repeater question

It'd be nice if you could get a radio that would do both 2m and CB. There isn't one, is there? It'd be nice if you could set one up to do cross band repeat between 2m and CB. I know it'd be against the rules to broadcast from CB into a ham freq, so that's out. But would it be within the rules to repeat the ham chat onto a CB freq so that our unlicensed trail companions could listen in? To do this would be a custom creation right?

You are transmitting, not broadcasting! ;-)

As far as CB/ham, this has been mentioned before, might be in the archives. Remember back to the discussion of the different parts of the FCC rules. CB and ham are regulated under different sets of rules and so are considered different 'types' of spectrum use. Also remember about radios being type-approved. Most radios are going to be either part 95 or part 97 approved, which is either they are approved for personal unlicensed use like CB and FRS or they will be approved for ham. I suppose if a manufacturer wanted to submit a combination radio for both types it might be OK, but AFAIK that's never happened.

Now all this assumes that you want to transmit on both services. In your scenario you could have a radio capable of listening to just about anything (there is no need to be type approved for a receiver only). That radio might have some market, but I suspect that it would only within the 4WD community since most of the rest of the world couldn't care less about CB anymore. Not to mention that it would only be able to listen on the service that it does not transmit on. So who'd be willing to pay much for a CB that can only listen to 2m?

Probably cheaper for CB users to just get a license and a cheap 2M. Then they could listen and transmit. If they don't want to get a license, they can always just get the 2M and listen. ;)
