Seems like there was a diesel 40 on CL a couple weeks ago. Did it end up in your stable?

I think that's "day" in Latin, or "ten" in Spanish. You must be thinking the latter. ;)

So as many of you saw last night, I now have a 1976 BJ40 from Honduras. I will post pics soon. A guy had it on CL for a few weeks and I had emailed him but no response. On Friday I got an email (along with 10 or 15 others) with a couple of pics. I called and offered to buy it right away. After a little haggling (I ended up paying a little more than he was asking) and a test drive, Timztoy and I picked it up on Sunday. Drives and handles very nice. Smokes a little. OK, a LOT. :) Pretty solid. Story is it was a farm truck in Honduras for a loooong time, and some of the "fixes" definitely show that. The PO was in Honduras doing peace corps volunteer work, and bought the truck with a couple of buddies. They ended up driving it all over Central America...all the way down to the Panama Canal. He drove it up through Mexico to the border, and relying on a healthy amount of ignorance of the laws was able to get it into the country. After a breakdown in LA he had it towed to San Francisco for repairs, then drove it across the country to his home in NJ. After a couple of years of driving it around there, he drove it to Colorado and it sat for a year or so until he decided he needed the cash and could not work on it for a long time as he is in grad school. Cool story...

The BJ looks like it has the original B engine, with a newer head. Starts up and drives and runs nice, although very smoky. A new air filter and fuel filter helped some. Definitely some bondo, but overall solid. Has the 4 speed, but no disc brakes on central american trucks. The turn signals are definitely an add on, and does not look like the fenders ever had a hole for the OEM turn signals. Did not come with a heater (who needs heat in Honduras?) and the rear floor of the tub has been "reskinned" (but looks stock from underneath?)

Plans are to probably do an overall restoration, but slowly. Can't drive in much in the winter with no heater and the diesel does not like to start in the cold. I have my 64 FJ to play with in the winter anyway. :)

Will take pics, and look forward to driving it as much as possible.
