So, what does everyone think of this? Another Y2K farce or should I take the shorter term option on my CD renewals? :D

Do you mean as far as the Mayan long count calendar running out? I think their solution was it would just reset and start the count over. This is basically the same occurrence that we go through all the time. The world does not end when the Julian calendar rolls over each month, year, century, etc. Eventually our calendar will do the same, December 31, 9999. Is there something significant about that? Is that next year 0000 or year one again?
The doomsday of Dec 21, 2012 (assuming Mayan 0.0.0.0.0 really does equal August 11, 3114 B.C., our calendar has been tinkered with a lot in the past 5,000 years) might be that the stores are all sold out of last minute Christmas gifts you forgot. Or that the economy is still in shambles from something less esoteric and more mundane and terrestrial than not collecting the right 13 skulls to prevent planetary upset. IOW, if a person waits until November 2012 to start getting ready for the unseen or emergency, he might be caught with his shorts down during the next blizzard this winter that knocks out the power for a week or not having enough savings for a lay-off, for example.
