View Full Version : which 40 would you keep?

Well, I came to the conclusion last night...after looking at the budget for all the stuff I want to do to my 80, which is my main DD and my main trail rig also...I don't really need 2 40's...and selling one would pay for most if not all of the mods I want for the 80. Which would you keep? Which would you sell?

My goal for whichever 40 I keep is to lift it (maybe SOA) and take the top off and use it as a fun occasional driver and mild to moderate wheeler

The contestants:

1964 FJ40
The Good:
Runs and drives well (but a 2f and 4 speed would probably be on the to-do list to replace the Chevy straight 6 and 3 speed)
Everything works, does not need much to be a fun driver and occasional wheeler, did Yankee Hill last weekend in the snow and was a blast.
Little rust, looks good
Nothing that needs fixed right away (knock on wood)
Cool earlier 40 with a lot of updates
Has aux. gas tank

The Bad:
not much...some rust to fix but nothing urgent, will want a 'new' 2f at some point, but runs fine now, brakes need some upgrading at some point

1976 BJ40
The good:
Cool truck from Honduras with a really cool story
Very rare BJ40 in the US
Runs and drives nicely
It is a diesel (which I think is good but some will disagree)
Worth more restored than the FJ40

the Bad:
Well, it was a work truck in Honduras for probably 30 years, so there have been some interesting 'fixes'.
Bondo...lots of it
Needs a lot of newer parts...all the doors eventually
Much harder to get parts for the B engine

Basically the FJ40 needs a lot less work but in my mind the BJ40 would be a much cooler truck to have. I think they would probably sell for about the same price now but the BJ has a lot more potential.

OK, what would you do?

I cannot tell another what to do, however if it was me, I'd keep the BJ40.

Why? Well, you're right, its worth more. You can always upgrade to a later model toyota diesel, and since you would want to replace the engine in the 64, whats the difference. Also, in this market, you could find a replacement tub fairly easily I would think.

If you are planning on keeping it for some time, keep the bj, its no investment, but it definitely has the COOL factor.

My 2c anyways.

Keep the BJ, if I ever get a 40 type rig I would look for a Troopy or BJ type just because there are fewer around

The BJ for sure. It just opens up so many more joakes when doing brintry spears in a bj. Lol.

Seariouslly. The fj offers nothing but fixs. The bj offers coolness and rarity they both need fixs. So that cancles out. And you'd have to seariouslly screw up the fj inorder to get that sweet HUGE cloud of smoke when you start it up. And drive it. So the bj takes that mark as well. :lmao:

imho i'd keep the 64, it appears to be a cleaner rig. The bj will be miserably slow

In my younger years I would have taken the 64 off your hands in a heartbeat. :D I agree with Wes ( and maybe Jim B.). You might sell the BJ and then you have money to put in to the 64, which is in better over all shape. If you can put the engine and drive train from the BJ in to the 64, that might be cool, too.

If I could only keep 1 I would for the 64. You can get parts for it and it's a cleaner rig. Sell the BJ to Corbet and fix up the 64.

As cool as a diesel is, you are looking at a great deal of work to make it wheelable. I thought I would go with Jim on transplanting the BJ motor, but... you still need to turbo it, and that will cost $$$ and that is kinda the opposite direction from your needs (getting money for the 80, not creating another black hole for bux deluxe).

Someone will love the BJ. The FJ is almost where you need it and no bux drainage, not much anyway.

lol...just about Randy. I thought I was very happy with just the 80 and the FJ and then the BJ came along. Farnham, the first post has links, I will get some pics of the BJ up soon.

Yeah you guys are right...the cost and difficulty of finding parts makes the BJ a much tougher build...

Nobody want's to drive behind the guy in a deisel at club runs. Not even Wes. Keep the red one. Sell the smelly one.

lol.. i never knew it was so bad. :D I never minded being tail gunner though.

finding bj parts are not that difficult esp since the rest of it is just a 40. really only the engine if different the cases are the same as a 40, and the rest is the same. It's probably actually easier than finding some 64 parts. Depends on where you really want it to end up. Even with a turbo that thing will be a slug in the mtns. IMHO the 64 is cleaner but the diesel has the cool factor. If your going to build up the 80 i'd leave the 40 mostly as a home depot runner and mild day wheeler.

FYI they are both on CL and MUD. Will keep whichever one does not sell first...
