Question for the mechanics who are familiar with the 2UZ-FE. How does that starter work, seeing that it's resting in the middle of the heads? It's not still direct-driving the flywheel like on other vehicles is it?

Maybe it's like a northstar :D starts it by the timing chain?

It works the same as all starters. I do belive it's a gear reduction. I've never had the pleasure to replace one. But my coworkers had to do it twice on the same car. Lol (mechanic error) Im not quite sure why they put it under the intake other than clearance issues. But ohwell

Yup. Works just like any other Toyota starter, just sits at 12:00. Have fun if you need replace yours!

It's not hard. Mabey 4 hours with all the tools. Make sure to get intake manifold gasket set if your going to do the job

Maybe heat? That lower right side spot always seems to be a PITA because of a header or something on 'V' configuration engines.
