View Full Version : Color for Brahma?

So, I've been thinking...

...not that this would happen anytime soon, but if someday I were to paint the Brahma I've had some ideas thrashing about in my mind...

The "Earl Scheib silver" has grown on me, and painting the interior with "Antique White" has worked for me as well. However the OEM color is Freeborn Red and part of me wants to take it back to its origins. I'm not sure the "Antique White" interior would work well with Freeborn Red exterior though, and I would probably have to deal with the red dashboard staring me in the face all the time.

I like what Gary Waggoner did with his FZJ45 in that he painted it an OEM Toyota silver color (which if I were to go silver would probably be easier to find a code and paint match for than "Earl Scheib silver"), but just like anybody else I find it's not fun to always copy people. I could probably handle a silver interior better than a red interior though.

So just out of curiosity, could somebody photoshop a freeborn red color onto my truck, just to see what it would look like?

My 1980 is Earl Scheib silver, too - inside and out. OEM color was Mustard.

While Mustard is close to the dreaded Corvette Yellow, I revile the silver. Cruisers should be OEM colors.

Freeborn Red isn't my fave, but it's not the worst - recall the term 'resale red' See additional photo for Mustard reference.

When I'm done, I'll have two 'cruisers in the colors most likely to be seen inside baby diapers - 'olive' and 'mustard'. Not sure what that means...

I love mustard personally...

it looks like my Earl Scheib silver is darker than your Earl Scheib silver - unless yours is just faded more. Especially your tub looks a lot lighter, the hardtop sides are pretty close.

Pick a rustoleum color that you like, grab 10 cans and take it to the painting garage in Franktown. In a few hours the exterior can be done. It is in no way a professional paint job and there will be flaws, but unlike a photo shop paint job it will be on your truck.:D

Seriously, when you do get around to doing a professional paint job, you are going to likely tackle all the body work and even if you don't do body work - all the paint is going to have to come off.

Between now and that time, you can have the Brahma rolling in the new color versus the new color rolling through your mind. :thumb:

personally, i like the grey, but that may have something to do with knowing the history and having been involved in the painting.

i agree with ricardo tho...pick a color you think you like and rattle can it. if you don't like, move onto the next color....

ditto that. Frickin' paint it red. You know you want to. It'll look sweet from across the street. Walmart has cans for like $3 each. !YOU CAN DO IT!

I'm usually one for stock cruiser colors but unless it's fully restored the Brama silver/grey whatever has worn on me. I'd paint it the same as Gary's 45. It's still a cruiser color, just a different year.

I'm kinda partial to freeborn red. My first 40 was that color.

I know it's a lot less paint, but I have rattle canned the Triumph tank 6 colors, searching for the right one. I also rattle canned my '73 Bronco and my '75 Powerwagon. It's a good way to see the color on your rig before investing in a shop job. <snip>i agree with ricardo tho...pick a color you think you like and rattle can it. if you don't like, move onto the next color....

Well there are guys who are good at Photoshop, and then there's me... but no one else was willing to play so here you go Matt.

I didn't bother masking off your mirrors, kinda got some some paint on the stinger too and a little bit on the back window, but if you're really going to rattle can then this will give you a more realistic expectation.. :hill:

enjoy!

edit: either one of the first two get my vote :thumb:

You could always use a bed liner of some kind on the interior (like mine) and maybe do the dash the same with a little thinner coat, or something. Pick a color to compliment the exterior. For the exterior I like Sea Foam green or Navy blue.

Matt...you gotta go with the Freeborn Red, or something at least a close match to it. And red on the dash with the black dash pad is not a bad look (in my opinon anyway):hill: What's that saying...Try it you'll like it!

For years I was thinking coca cola yellow for my '72 40, but now I'm back to the original Freeborn Red. Don't like the light blue on my 69 40, so I'm working on transitioning it to Royal Blue (rattle..rattle) from the same year and it's available (close enough for my eyes anyway) from Rustolem.

40's are a basic simple machine and deserve uncomplicated colors!:rant::rant::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Thanks for playing Tim! What color is the first one? It's almost what I have now looks like...

With the red one, would it be easy to make it a little less pink? I don't know how you work your magic...

yeah if I was seriously thinking about doing a color transformation I probably would do some rattle canning; it's just hard for me to do long-term; you know, painting over something that ultimately is a questionable substrate...

Thanks for playing Tim!

Yeah, you've got some skillz Tim :thumb: I have to admit, having all the Photoshop work done it is cool to see the effects of different colors and it is allot faster than breaking out the rustoleum. :D

The first one is kind of a gray/blue, if you save it off and put it right next to the original you'll see the difference. It doesn't seem as blue today as it did at home, remarkable how different the monitors are. But yeah I'll play a little more tonight..

All I'm doing is using the magic wand with the tolerance around 6 to select the body, then I copy that to a new layer, then I color that new layer with some new color, then play with its transparency and fill % until it looks right. There's probably a mo betta way of doing this but that's the extent of my skills.. :)

Hmmm - no "purple" comments yet?

I think your 40 is easily recognized in that gray color, as no one else really has it. I suppose that could be good or bad. I can see the allure of returning to original paint color, although getting that done inside and out would be quite a bit of effort and cost I would think. Is the engine bay still red? Insides of fenders? Is the entire interior white, or just the instrument panel?

I too like the color Tim used in his first pic. I like the green as well, but green is becoming too commonplace around this club.

subzali
12-01-2009, 01:38 PM
Inside of hood/engine bay has black paint that is a little flakey so red is poking through here and there. I have painted the inside of the windshield frame, hard doors, hardtop panels, gas tank cover, seat brackets, fuel filler cover, and dashboard Antique White. The front floor has some kind of bedliner/trunk liner (not very durable, flakes off) and primer. Rear floor is, I don't know, dark colored (like caked-on dirt), as are the (replaced) inner fenders/wheel wells.

I like what Lance at IPOR did with his FZJ40 - he put down some aluminized insulation stuff then covered it with a bedliner material. Would consider doing something similar on the inside when the time comes.

And with this total color makeover I would be talking probably taking the body off the frame and taking it down to bare metal at a body shop...so yeah a LOT of work...

Unless you're trying to do a "back-to-stock" restoration, it doesn't matter what the original color was at this point.

What's your favorite FJ40 color, Matt? Paint it that color and be happy. I've always thought it looked cool in the color you have it now, but it's your Cruiser and it will be for a long time. If you love love love Freeborn Red, go for it. If you prefer a silver metallic, make it so. If you want to paint it a non-Toyota color, do it.

I feel sure that no matter what you choose, it will be super cool. It gets better with each passing year as you modify it to make it stronger, more capable, and more comfortable. The paint color is just another modification/upgrade.

Dark Blue, that is it for me. Figured it out the other night, reading the last page of the summer 2010 OJ.

If you see one for sale, le me know.

Is this the royal blue or the nordic or is this even a factory blue for 40?

I'm not sure that's an OEM color - I like Nordic Blue too but it's different. The lines where the color changes on that Pig are not correct...

Yep that was a home paint job on that blue pig.

The Nordic blue is not dark enough for me personally. So I guess maybe the darker blue 40 I saw in the Summer 2010 OJ is not factory.

Matt, that blue on the 40 you posted is my absolute favorite color for a 40. I think it was only offered on the late year models (79-83). The earlier years were more of a sky blue. There is a similar (or the same) color on the 60 series, and it looks great on that as well.

I love the green of my 40, but I'd sell it in a heartbeat to buy a blue one like you posted.

The "Nordic Blue" I guess is actually "Medium Blue" - Code 857 and was a '81-'83 color
http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/colorcodes.html
http://forum.ih8mud.com/paint-body/93601-fj40-color-code-chart.html

The "Smurf Blue" is actually "Sky Blue" - Code 854 and was a '75-'79 color:
http://risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/attachment.php?attachmentid=4653&stc=1&d=1178083520

There is apparently a "Royal Blue" - Code T452 ('69-'71)/822('72-'74) but I'm not sure what that is...

The 8B2 blue of '86-'88 FJ60/62s is darker than Nordic Blue I think:
