Well, I have started the winter project of swapping a 3.4 V6 from a 96 4Runner into my 91 with a 3.0. Just at the stage of "learning" and removing parts from the 96. Here are a few pics. Will update as time goes on. Terry

Wish you were here, I would love to help and learn more on what needs to be done on this swap. Please keep posting pics and updates, this swap is something that may actually be viable for me to do.

MUCH harder going from 22R-E to a 5VZ than from a 3VZ. Not impossible, but just harder. It makes a lot more sense for you (and me) to drop in a 3RZ, the 2.7L Tacoma engine. That is our equivalent of the 3.0L->3.4L swap.
