View Full Version : 2010 Snow and Pizza Run Sat. Jan. 16th - Yankee Hill

JadeRunner
12-07-2009, 09:27 PM
Date: Saturday Jan. 16th, 2010
Meeting Time: 9:00 am - Leave at 9:30

Meeting Place: Cemetery area half mile above (west) of Central City-the normal spot. Pizza after the run at Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs. 5.00 donation per adult to help cover the cost of pizza. Kids free.

CB Channel 4 - Ham 146460
Will will air down and/or chain up (if your using chains) at the meeting place. Many elect to not use chains.

Larger built rigs with winches can leave ahead of the main group closer to 9am.

Difficulty - this run is open to everyone. You just may not get as far as some. The only requirement is to have hard points front and rear for strapping purposes and of course a strap ready to go. A shovel and additional recovery gear is recommended.

Be prepared to stay warm and dry with winter clothing and boots. It can be really cold and windy up there.

Snow conditions are good so it should be fun.

Kenny, I will venture a guess for you...........stock FJC tires 265/70/16.
Btw how many miles do you have on those?

Close SRT gets the prize 265/75 16

a bit over 40000 on them. still good tread.

If you have a set you can loan i am game. just nervous on them coming off and doing damage. Always a fear of mine.

Yes, actually I have thought a lot about that over the years. But, in this case since itís an annual run with club pizza and open to all level of difficulties, I think we just leave it open to all and hope for the best based on snow conditions. Treat it as a social run.

Bobzooki told me yesterday there hasnít been a whole lot of fresh snow up there recently, so hopefully we wonít be stuck in the parking lot like we did several years ago.

Rudy, myself and a couple others camped at the upper parking lot last weekend. We were able to get a stock Rav4 in with little trouble albeit with a really good driver. The upper hill was icy with powder on top, Rudy made it past the first turn but none of the stock vehicles were able to.

Since the run is over a month away I don't know that that helps much other than to confirm that there is little snow as of now.

Has there been any pick for a pizza joint yet? If it ends up at Beau Joe's let me know, I know a couple of the head managers and can always see what the can offer us. I can also say that we will have a big party and that we might decide to go somewhere else unless they have a better offer for us.

Do we have a guesstamite of home many people? I know that maybe hard but maybe just going off of past snow runs and the vibe off the thread.

If you could hit them up for a discount that would be awesome :thumb: - 20% off, 4 pizza free, whatever will help :)

As for # of people, I would guess 50  - Last year there was a HUGE group. The year before that I think there was 30-40.

I've talked 2 my friend I can get a dollar off the buffet prices, $11 per person for just pizza and $13 to add the salad bar. He also said that he could give us a pitcher discount and will try to match any other places offer. His name is Brian (if they ask say superman(don't ask)), he's a really stand up guy and said that he'll do what he can and if the organizer of the run wants to give him a call he already has a head up. He was even the one that said shop around and he would do his best to have use choose them, which I still think would not be a bad idea. Not sure but think we get our own room!

Thanks for this. I like the idea of having a fixed price for an all you can eat buffet. Although, I figure we will have about 40-50 people. And at the prices you mentioned we would be over budget. About $15 per person with tip and pop. Minus $5 donation would be $4-500 dollars for the club. And we have a 300.00 budget if I remember correctly. So 11.00 per person should be our target point with pop and tip.

I am planning to check out the pizza place across the street like some mentioned at the meeting. So more to come. I'm open to ideas. I was also thinking of checking out the pizza place in Central City that we used to go too.

I was thinking that we should look around, I've worked for the company before and think they are overpriced, but he did say himself to shop around and if a better offer comes around he would do his best to meet or beat it.

I can make sure, if we R.S.V.P in time, that we have his best staff working it.

Not sure but think all non-LQ drinks are included.

I'm good friends with the day bartender and some of the owners at Dostal Alley, (pizza place in central). I also used to work in Crook's Palace in Blak Hawk so I'll try to speak with both places in the next few days and see what they can offer. Dostal is a casino with limited room however, I would not recomend it except boose will be cheaper. Crook's has plenty of space, their pizza is good, and it has a real nice bar without blinking lights.

Why don't we go to Beau Jo's and be big boys and just pay our own way? That way all anybody has to plan for is actually making it off the mountain to be able to eat at any pizza place .

I hear ya. But, I think most people like the idea of a Snow and Pizza Run where the club at least subsidizes the Pizza. I could change it to $5-10 donation per adult to relieve some of the pressure.

Either way I will plan to check out a few places before the Jan meeting so we can discuss it more. At least this year you can count on me managing the costs the best I can based on the # of people that show up. I can't say I did that last year.

Not a lot of ice as of yesterday, chains will not help that much. Drifts are mildly crusted and crystalline so mometum and wheels speed will be your greatest assets and of course the higher your underpinnings are the better your chances. Drifts up towards the top are 3-5+ feet deep and plentiful. Choose your trail breaker well! Still two weeks before the S&P run so a lot can happen to change conditions! The trail should be broke before then but wind can erase tracks overnight. For an example, the large drift at the playground is over 6' tall this year and the crust will not support a person!

Things I've learned on snow runs:

If you have street tires on, you probably won't have much fun.

If you don't have tow points front and rear, Rudy will not pull you out. He's tired of wrecking straps.

Aired down means around 10psi, not 20psi.

Tire chains always cut through the crust. Sometimes plain tires will stay on top and do better. Chains are nice on ice however.

Work the wheel. Steer back and forth RAPIDLY to keep your sidewalls biting into fresh stuff and to leave a nice wide path for your rear tires. It might make the difference between makin' it and not.

If you can't crawl it, FLOOR IT!

Don't get get stuck pulling someone out with a strap! You won't be able to unhook the strap under tension.

Don't bother letting the 4wheelers go ahead in the snow. They often can't do any better than the trucks.

Keep your feet dry.

Also....

Bring more water than 1 bottle!

Just because your truck is warm it does not count for warm clothes!

One thing i would add is momentum is key. Make sure you have the room in front of you to make a run at it. It is easier to start on somewhat stable ground then in the middle where it is deeper.

RedCreeper

I would leave the working of the wheel back and forth to when your not going anywhere or almost stopped. Then you will need to find the traction to keep going forward.

If you spin your tires until you have no more progress you will not be able to back up!

Very true if you keep spinning. Once you stop forward momentum and try to wiggle it then don't dig down a hole then MOST of the time you can back out and the working the wheel back and forth can help here also. There is no snow to push going backwards since it is all packed under the front. As with all advice it is just that.... advice. Every situation is different and conditions are different also. Then you add the vehickle and what someone does is or does not work for them, wheelbase, weight, width, tire, power and so one is always different. But the one advice that is always a smart one is don't venture out alone. That way if you can't back out then your buddies are there to help. Sorry hate to get chatty it was just me trying to give helpful insight and advice. :thumb::hill::cheers: I will be quiet now.....

may not be the right spot for this but here ya go. PIC is ok for a cell phone. need to clean her up and take some good shots when i have time. i will have to update a personal page also. thanks again.

Hi all,
Is there going to be space for a few trucks from the Horsetooth 4 Wheelers again this year? I've had a couple guys call and ask me when your trip is going to be. We had a blast last year!

You guys are always invited and welcome to any of our runs. It was a pleasure running with your crew last year. As long as you don't mind dealing with a large group and uncertain trail conditions.

Perhaps someone else would be willing to setup up another run in January as an option with less rigs. Hint hint.;)

Thanks Scott! I know I also thoroughly enjoyed the run & pizza last year, but will be bowing out this year. I am in the process of executing my plan of some upgrades before spring. Rebuilt 2F is almost ready to fire up, ARB Air Locker next, etc.

That snow sounds crunchy as all get out. If I recall right UB said it would not hold a person's weight, am I correct? If so there is going to be a whole lot of winching and strapping going on.

Do you remember what PSI you were running, I did not see much of a "bulge" in your tires?

How far did you guys get? Did you go all the way over to the St. Mary's glacier side? Just wondering how that downhill section is. Bill and I had to winch downhill for most of the way.

Just another reminder for the newbies, remember to air down your tires to at least 12-14# 10 would be even better. You'll float like a butterfly and .........................well you know.

Bad news on the weather side. I spent some time this morning with the weather guy in our office and right now the jet stream is positioned to keep Denver and the mountains short on snow through the middle of Jan. However, maybe that is a good thing. We all know weahter people are wrong so if he says no snow, we should get a ton of snow. Cross your fingers.

treerootCO
12-30-2009, 01:08 PM
I was running 15 in the front and 18 in the rear for a big a$$ 80. The snow is all crystals with a 6" crust. It will not support a person's weight. We made it to the top section where you can go down to Rollins or up Yankee. The venture into the forest wasn't the best choice as the bail out turn around was a wee bit dodgy without a winch.

Snowrun
12-30-2009, 01:12 PM
The snow conditions varied a lot along the trail. We had areas were there was deep powder with no crust and there were also areas were there was a thick crust that you could walk on. Lots of opportunity to use the winch and snatch straps.

Uncle Ben
12-30-2009, 02:00 PM
Conditions are terrible! I wouldn't go up there! :p: Rockrunner, there is no "floating" on crystaline snow that has a soft crust! You power through it and it gets easier for each vehicle behind you, period! I ran 16lbs and broke trail most of the day.

That's right. We hope you join us. I was directing that to other club members to entice them to setup more runs for more options for everyone.

I say if you set the date and time and others will follow. I would be up there every time there was a good fresh snow if I had the time. As long as there are a few good prepared men to strap you back as needed then there is plenty of snow wheelin' fun to be had IMO.

Or a run could be planned anytime for people that can't make it or won't make it to the S/P Run...like we did last year (I couldn't make the S/P Run last year but had a free day so planned a run):

Dostal Alley was the only place I checked out in Central City. Parking would be difficult for our group as well as space inside.

I walked into the pizza place across from Bea Joís and couldnít envision a group of our size fitting in there. I think there was another pizza place there but I didnít have time to check it out. I like the idea of Beau Jo's in terms of a fixed price per person for pizza and pop and our own room (upstairs).

I talked to one of the managers there today (Steve). I hadnít been able to get a hold of the other manager Brian that James (Black Diamond) referred me too. But, I got Steve to commit to 11.00 per person including sodaís. Plus 2.9% tax and 20% gratuity (about 13.50 per person). That does seem a little steep. But, we would have the buffet in our room and could choose an unlimited amount of 3 different kinds of pizza. They would then do separate checks for the salad bar and beer if we wanted.

So 50 people x 8.50=425.00. So I would suggest recommending a donation of 5-10.00 person and raising the approved amount to 400.00 since our club size has grown. I plan to be at the meeting to discuss this.

Maybe next year we can find another suitable place in Central City\Black Hawk or Idaho Springs.

This is set to be a fun run. Glad to see everyone getting excited about our Annual Snow run.

My gut feeling is that with all the big boys breaking trail, and minimal new snow lately - we will all probably easily make it to the last deep tree section before the top\timberline area. Beyond that, Iím sure the wind will have blown in some giant drifts. Winch points up there are far and few between, which makes it tough, but Iím sure there are a few that will give it a go. We could also have some of the more confident winch equipped rigs pair up and try to explore some of the side roads for added wheeling opportunityís. Just make sure to communicate real well. 146460 and CB channel 4 will be the primary channels for main group communication. Perhaps use another CB channel if you are in a smaller side group during your exploration since the frequencies will get busy.

Also, make sure the guy behind you sees you due to the numerous turns during the first part of the run.

It sure is nice knowing there are so many experienced club members coming. I will appreciate all the help and guidance with the recoveryís and stuff. But mainly with clear communication as to whatís happening as we go. Since they are typically people waiting and wondering whatís going on. Everyone take their time, have fun and listen to others suggestions during your recovery. The common challenge is of course to go fast enough with high enough rpmís to carry though tough sections and yet not get slung into the trees due to the previous guys wild ruts.

I have a had a few guys PM me asking how they can help.

Letís have Rudy and Brady helping line up and pre-stage rigs to head out in the morning. In fact when you first pull into the parking area, park near the west side if you want to be in the first 9am group. In general the larger more built rigs get the privilege of running closer to the front. In my experience is these days, 3\4 of the club members are well built and experienced. So if someone specifically wants to be closer to the front or run with the 9am group them let them (or myself) know.

Letís make Marco tail-tail gunner, communicating when the last man is out.

I will be with the first group heading out to Beau Joís to make sure the Pizza in order. The quickest way out is down to Fall River Rd. via York Gulch Rd. I believe there is a York Gulch Street sign at this intersection on our main road a few miles from the cemetery. This can be an air up spot. From here, you can go back out the way we came via the cemetery or an alternate route out to Central City Parkway by a ghost town that Rudy and others know about. I say this because there are commonly sub groups heading down at different times and some people need to hit their trailer at the cemetery etc.

Here is a vid of me bustin' the drift at the playground a few weeks ago to get you stoked. I probably won't be doing this at the Snaw and Pizza Run. Courtesy TreeRoot's girlfriend.

Just follow the road up past the opera house out of Central City... you will see a cemetary on your right, and a plethora of landcruisers on your left..... in the parking area...

The Cemetary goes up a hill on the right (east side of the road)....
The road out of Central City heads kind of North West... NOT the road to Nevada ville
....

To get to central city you can take US 6 out of Golden (follow the sign's) or you tcan take the NEW handy dandy highway that leaves I-70 just after the tunnel below Crow hill... if you make it as far as Idahoe Springs, you went too far...

Or just follow all of the landcruisers.....
