I just bought a 1988 X-tra Cab 3.0 liter! It has a pretty weak engine in it and the fuel pump just went out on it. BUT its clean with very minimal rust and easily fixable. It will be getting my 3.4 Supercharged V-6 along with all the suspension and lift from my Red Pick-up (well suspension is an "eventually" with Ashley's school loans looming overhead)

I'll post pics when I can.

-P.S. Where can I find Downey exhaust stuff? or 3.4 conversion parts now that Mike is no longer in business.

Awesome Justin!

Talk to Brian about the 3.4 stuff, he's been helping others out around the area.

Fix that 3.0 up so you can drop it into my 85

Downey is no more.
Congrats! You got a second chance at an uber clean truck, and much kewler!
So you liberated it from Don, eh? Fuel pump did the trick?

Let me know if you want 'help'. If you can call fatherly assistance 'help'. :lmao:

Even if he would, I wouldn't let him - we like you too much!
A 3.0 swap is all the work of a 3.4, with none of the benefit.

But then it does go with the 3.0 qualities: all the power of a 4-cylinder, all the mileage of a poorly tuned 454.

You want the 2.7 I-4. Mucho better and easier.

Ya I kinda feel bad. I've talked to him a few times, but I've already referred a friend to him for a 3.4 swap. I don't know if he wants to take on that much. It kinda sounds like his plate might be too full for my friends truck.

WHICH BTW my friend Ben Biehl picked up an '89 3.0liter for $500! ANd the body is CLEAN!!! No rust!!!

Oh do y'all think $500 for Downey headers and a 2001 Taco M/T ecu Shipped is a good deal?

Are the headers new?

Seems pretty reasonable from what I've seen a few go for.

I like my downey headers, FWIW, for my 4cyl.

Justin, I can't remember where I saw it, but I read a review just this week about some Doug Thorley headers for the 3.0. They were new, and looked just like my Downey ones, so you might look into those. $380 for used seems high. If they are the only game in town, though, perhaps not.

Including freight? Yes, I would say so, that is a cheap price on the ECU FAIK but compare with Jimsgotparts.com.

By the way... I forget how many miles on the MT on that truck - I don't recall hearing of any issues... but of course you know someone who knows the tricks on overhauling an R series. I even have some shims left over, and shop jigs. Redline MT90 is like joy juice to the R series tranny, it loves it. Takes ~300 miles and then maybe another fluid change to get the old crap out and make things really happy in there.

Justin, I can help with the wiring. I just don't have a way to swap engines at my house. My garage is too short and it is too cold outside.

Please call if you have any questions. Have Ben call me also, I can't find his number.

Thanks Brian. I'll have Ben call ya. It sounds like he is wanting to save money on the whole thing by doing the engine himself anyway.
