OK here's my thinking on my installation.

I am now planning to keep both the CB and Ham in the 40. I would install the Ham (primary comm.) overhead, facing rearward above the dash, attached to the cage (where the CB is currently mounted) routing the Ham antenna to the rear tire carrier where the CB antenna use to reside.

Now for the CB (secondary comm.) I am thinking of mounting the CB also overhead between the seats facing forward and the antenna routing to the front bumper, due to distance limitations between CB/Ham antenna's, via the quick connect antenna attachment I currently have.....this way the antenna would mount only when I need to have CB and Ham (Moab and when Michele is driving the FJC she can be on the hand held). My goal in all of this is to not have to mount anything onto sheet metal.

I personally don't like having things mounted overhead. I rolled my first 40 and the overhead mounted CB came flying off and acted like a projectile in the cab. Those thumb twist mounts are junk. I have my ham mounted to the center console and the CB in the dash of my 40.

I think your set up would work, but just make sure it's secure. :thumb:

My front bumper is a bit wider than most of the after market bumpers that I see on 40's. I mounted an antenna on each end. The placement is not optimal, but it works fine. It has a nice symmetry.

I have both of my antennae mounted on my front bumper. Like Ricardo, not optimal due to very little ground plane, but with a 40 that sees topless adventures often and sees seasonal top configuration changes, the only thing that doesn't change much is the configuration of the front bumper. But since my Ham antenna is the homemade 2m one and my CB antenna is a firestik style I lose some symmetry. Doesn't bother me.

And I still have pretty decent range. Not optimal, but there are things I could do about that that I haven't bothered with yet, because like I said my range is decent.

I like your thoughts of placement for the radios; they will be easier to hear. My Ham inside my Tuffy is hard to hear, the CB in the dash is slightly better. I really can't communicate on either if I'm on the highway though, as it's too loud to hear anything coming out of them. Some day I would like to get a cage and move them up to it to help with the acoustics. And maybe get an ear bud or auxiliary speaker to help. Hatfield has both mounted, I think stacked, on his cage.

When I finally get a mobile rig for the 40 (currently I just use the HT) I plan to install it above the CB. The CB is is mounted between the spreader bars of the cage, right above the dash area. I might even get a smaller CB unit and mount both side by side as the current CB unit is huge.

As for antennas...Currently the CB antenna mount is on the rear tire carrier. I'll probably put the Ham antenna there and the removable CB antenna on the front bumper.

FWIW, If you can't easily see your CB display (facing forward behind your head) you run the risk of ending up off channel and not knowing it for long periods of time.

The other thing to consider is that ceiling-mounted radios dangle their mic cords. Are they going to interfere with your vision to the rear through the center mirror? Even if the radios are mounted securly, your mics can become rabid chihuahuas flailing near your face. Most CB mics are worse offenders than Ham mics.

Good point...My mic in the 40 has thunked me on the noggin a few times :rant: - What was I talking about again? :hill:

I think it's a 10m ham radio, not a CB.

This is a 10m/11m radio, 11m being CB. It is a very common illegal mod that is gray-market in the U.S. Hams that use 10m are quite vigilant about tracking down and reporting folks who misuse these radios on 11m.

So do you think this radio has been modded to cover CB and 2m bands? I know at some level anything's possible, but more probable is a mis-titled CL posting.

My own idea is that the poster used the word HAM to get more traffic to the ad. "If you want to talk to detroit or L.A you can or anywhere inbetween from denver." to me this means if you're driving on the interstate between Detroit and LA you can talk to people, not necessarily that you can talk to Detroit from Denver or LA. Again, I think it is wording used to encourage a sale.

It is not illegal to use a converted CB on the HAM bands, so long as the control operator has a license for the particular frequency. Bruce told us the story in one of the early HAM classes that he used one with 3 watts of power on 10M to talk all over the world. Is it possible with the right antenna to talk to Detroit from Denver or LA from Denver with this radio? Yes, just as long as your antenna system is setup to do so. This radio with two firestik antennas will not get to Detroit from Denver, even with an illegal amplifier at 1000 watts. (Well, maybe with 1000 watts). Course, the firestiks would probably melt with all of the heat losses they will encounter at that power.

Now, if you were to hook it up to an antenna like mine

So to be clear- the modified CB isn't illegal, and the act of modifying the CB wasn't illegal, the only potential illegal act is transmitting on the 10m band without the proper license to do so? Still, I'm passing on the thing if anyone else wants it.

Yes, you can take any radio and modify it for use on amateur bands and it's perfectly legal as long as you personally have the license to operate on that band. No need for a special technician to work on it, as long as you do a good job and keep the radio tuned not to conflict with other hams or users on other services. The purpose of amateur radio was to tinker and that falls totally within that realm.

Once it's been brought into the ham fold, though, it must always remain there unless it's properly brought back to the original service (and I'm not 100% sure if this is possible). By that I mean if you take a CB and mod it to work on 10m or 12m, then to bring it back to CB would take being worked on by someone licensed to do that. In the case of Part 95 radio (FRS, CB, GMRS), marine, aircraft, commercial service the people who are allowed to work on the radio are specially licensed to work on those radios. So a ham modified CB would have to be tuned back to CB by a CB radio technician, you can't do that yourself. That is a different license and test.

What is wrong probably about this radio is it's not a legal CB radio. Many of these Galaxy radios are ham radios modified to work on CB with much higher power. That is illegal and there is no way around that. You can never take a Part 97 approved radio (this is the amateur rules) and use it anywhere else no matter who works on it. A Part 97 radio is not and never was approved to work on Part 95 bands. Even if you can show that it meets all the criteria the FCC won't allow it.

Bingo, and that's why the truckers like them. Those are the guys that come through like they are trying to blow you up.

There's lots of info on the web about modding the Galaxy radios, they seem to be a good one for this type of illegal mod.

Type 95 (CB) gear all has to be approved and tested by the FCC. If it doesn't have the FCC stamp for the exact configuration as when it is sold or used, it doesn't meet the standards and is therefore illegal.

Type 97 (HAM) gear falls into two categories:
1)Commercially made rigs
2)Homebrew rigs

The first has to also be type approved by the FCC. That is why the new Yaesu radio that we were all ogling lately didn't have price yet because it didn't "exist" yet until its type approval was completed. Then they could sell it as Type 97.

The second can have anything done to it the owner/creator/tinkerer wants, as long as it still meets type 97 rules. For instance, you cant make a 2 meter radio have an integrated 2000 watt amplifier, because the 2M band is limited to 1500 watts.

§ 95.409 (CB Rule 9) What equipment
may I use at my CB station?
(a) You must use an FCC certificated
CB transmitter at your CB station.
You can identify an FCC certificated
transmitter by the certification label
placed on it by the manufacturer. You
may examine a list of certificated
equipment at any FCC Field Office or
at FCC Headquarters. Use of a transmitter
which is not FCC certificated
voids your authority to operate the
station.
(b) You must not make, or have
made, any internal modification to a
certificated CB transmitter. (See CB
Rule 25, § 95.425). Any internal modification
to a certificated CB transmitter
cancels the certification, and use of
such a transmitter voids your authority
to operate the station.

have operated your CB station with

not apply if you hold a license in another
radio service which allows you to

I thought you wanted to get that 1802 modified to have an internal 2000W amplifier!!

That might cook the squirrels that are in the trees when transmitting on the trail..

I like how the FCC puts a limit on how far CB can travel. 155 miles.

yup, the nimrods at the FCC took 11m away from the Hams and created the "citizen's band" without understanding propagation of HF. CB should have always been UHF.

To your original question, why not get one of the combined CB/FM antennas that will side mount where your OEM antenna is? Are the performance of these antennas optimal? No, but you're only using the CB to talk to the front/rear of the trail run group anyways right? I think you can also get a module that goes inline via connectors on your CB coax to accomplish the same thing. I have a firestik antenna (no spring) mounted on the cowling of my 40. Gets you as good a ground plane as you will get unless you have a metal roof. It's pretty durable too, I roller over with this one twice and it never hurt the antenna.

FWIW I run one of these in the 60. Performance of the CB is fine... as in it is no worse than it was with a dedicated antenna. The signal to the FM radio is weaker, but it picks up local channels OK. I like it.

I run a 4' CB whip antenna with a coil at the bottom. I think it was the cheapest one the place on sheridan had... couldn't have been more than 30 bucks..
