swap a cab?

me neither, but heck, I could use a new project :)

Here is what I started with...

and the second one is why.

J Kimmel

I usually go without doors, but when its raining or on the trailer pulling through rain or snow, it sure is nice to have doors that fit, to keep the elements out.

Here is the little spot in Moab where I did it...it sure didn't look that tight at the time.

...but hey, I am more of a "learn by experience" kind of guy, so next time I try this spot, I will go much higher than the last time...even higher than I think is high enough :)

oh and it also resulted in the 2nd and 3rd pic, but thats another story;)

J Kimmel
01-23-2010, 03:13 PM
so anyhow...

I got this guy from Jim over at Jims got parts.

once again I learn from experience...so I should've opted for a different cab...instead I got the one with no front end, and no windshield:rolleyes:

so I got some floor rot on the driver side :lmao:

J Kimmel
01-23-2010, 03:18 PM
but the good news is that I have perfectly good floorpans in my old cab, and welding up that sheetmetal is pretty easy :)

So far, I have chipped off the factory floorline (remarkably easy) and cut out the corners to tub them back.

I will be in SLC next week for business, so as soon as I get back I am taking it to Blast Tech and have them sandblast the whole thing. Then I can weld in patch panels and get it bedlined inside and painted.

I also pounded the rocker seam flat. The Trail Gear sliders I have now have taken some pounding, so I will replace them with 2x4 .250 rectangular sliders. I had the same on the old truck and they were pretty stout :)

How are your projects coming :)

Waste of time....Just buff it right out! ;) :hill:

J Kimmel
01-23-2010, 04:13 PM
ya...part of me says that, but doors are nice when the weather sucks :)

next go around is all tube :)

Make covered tube doors and do the snap in tops like Chili is using.

BTW....instead of the whole cab can't you just replace the B-pillar?

that could be down the road :)

I have no idea how to cut out and replace a b-pillar. I thought about it, but man thats a lot of work (like this isn't) but at least this way I can start fresh, like with a fresh paintjob too:blah::blah:

Looks great Jeremy!

You going to keep the red, or go something different?

J Kimmel
01-24-2010, 04:17 PM
not sure yet...I will be in SLC all next week, so the first week in Feb it will get completely sandblasted, so I will primer, and pick a color. I will bedline the interior as well, and one wheel needs to get warrantied (severely bent it) so I will tear down the others to open up the rings a bit with a plasma ( so I can get my hand in there ) and re-paint those too.

Any ides for color?

I thought about:

Rootbeer (seen it though)
Black Cherry (good friends buggy is already this color so, no)
Red (I dunno, honestly seems kinda boring)
Lime Green (air randy already has it so, no)
Hot Rod Black (seems cool, but I bright color might be fun too)
Orange (one of my favorites, but its been done)

Primer? flat black?

thats the Hot Rod Black...similar to the current color, more black less gray.

Considered it...seems done though. I'm still leaning towards it though...

Can't do blue either, good friends' buggy is bright blue.

Camo? Nah go with flat black this way when you lean it against a rock you can touch it up right there..... Just another trail fix!

You could go with Maroon, but that color has been played

...and I re-read that shortly after, and wondered, "self, is Bill Morgan going to see this?"

Actually I love red, but lots of guys have red:o

If I could find some re-production retro stickers for a decent price, I would probably go Khaki and put them on :)

I've been thinking orange cream...orange on top and khaki on the bottom, that could be cool :)

There's not an "Orange Cream" or "Yellow" chile? Is there? At least not yet... is there? We'll maybe we shouldn't really go there... :lmao: There's very few bright yellow Toy's of any type. Or how about "Posole White"? Bill would like that one! Bill loves posole! At least he did last fall in Ouray...Actually, it was verrrry good. I had some and do concur! Just having some fun here.....

Just pick what "you" like man and go with it! :thumb: And yeah, somebody has probably already done it......somewhere....but it doesn't really matter...as long as it's you! I've changed my mind at least three time on the color for my '72-40. And I'll change it at least three more before it's done.

Man Jeremy! That is a serious undertaking! Must be nice to work on the cab off the truck.
This way you can cut holes for the roll cage in the floor now to drop the legs through when you go to weld the tops. Also, no glass in the way for welding the cage right to the cab.

Can't light anything on fire. can't melt any wires... nice!

See? Lots of plusses starting with nothin' but metal!
Gonna be nice!

Flat black ratrodish?

This is the office bicycle. It's a rescue bike found in the woods. Lin and I repainted it one night while I was doing server maintenance at the office. Flat black and red. The whitewalls and white hockey tape grips set off the motife (only in the last picture).
My Wife did the "graphics" while I was outside with the spray paint.
Investment? $11 including the whitewall tires.

well its no deathmobile 2000 but since I've done little with my new cab I decided to just cut it off today :)

I want more headroom and better protection overhead, so after the new cage is in I am going to put in a sheet of .250 aluminum overhead for some protection from the elements.

Hoping it doesn't rain in Moab:rolleyes::rolleyes:

After cutting some stuff off I started capping the A and B pillars, got the passenger side done. I will get the other side done tomorrow night then on to bending Thursday :)

Going to start bending the new cage probably Friday night, so ya, I'll most likely be working on it this weekend, hoping to get it mostly finished though with the exception of some roofing material :)
