Someone on another forum heard something about Holy Cross being scheduled to close. Can't find anything on it.

I am hoping this is idle gossip or a case of the telephone game. Anyone know?

Haven't heard, but the MVUM isn't out yet for the White RIver NF. The proposed maps are here, but I haven't had time to look them over yet:

Question posted:

7-759.1: This is the Holy Cross City 4-wheel drive road and is now showing
closed to motorized vehicles. This road provides significantly motorized
recreation with minimum resource impacts. Closure of this road would
push people looking for this type of experience to try other trails and result
in increased resource damage. The road does provide hunting access for
those with ATVs and allows hunters to disperse in the Homestake
drainage.

Response:

Big Horn Jeep Club has adopted this road and does maintain it. The road
is open to jeeps under Alternatives B and C.

Oh man. I have not seen any alerts from COHVCO, Blue Ribbon, etc. Holy Cross at risk.

And on the FS site, only Maps A, F and G are posted.

Alternatives D and E would close it apparently. They dropped A (no action), yet those are the maps posted, as you noted.
Alternative C is the one we would want.

New alternative F is B with 'features' based on feedback.
The preferred alternative is new alternative G.
Alternative G is a culmination of the travel management planning process. This alternative utilizes all the alternatives presented in the DEIS, public input, and further incorporation of the latest regulations for travel management.
No idea what this means on the ground.

Bill, like you, I've seen nothing on this. I know the post you are referring to, and I wouldn't put too much stock in that as anything but rumor/gossip. The guy is from NE, and read somewhere, but can't remember where, that it was going to close.

IMO, Gene and others are dialed in and connected all over the state, and would have known about it long before some guy in NE.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be worried, as I think HC is for sure on the chopping block due to the proximity to local hiking destinations.

I am an all year user of the area - wheeling in summer and fall, hunting in winter. I know the hiking destinations to which you refer (and one of them is a 'game trail' we use in elk hunting... not shown on the map, and as I read it, to be 'rehabilitated').

It is a very heavily used multiuse area, 'user conflict' is something those who hate us would point to, shouting. Yes, it is an at-risk area. Yet the reality on the ground is that in every experience I have had, the closest thing to user conflict I have seen is one hunter using an ATV on the road that other hunters were hunting (lazy bastids...) (which would be technically illegal, BTW... :lmao:)

I emailed Gene and COHVCO the link to this thread.

So should I even try planning for HC being the hard trail for the FJC only run? Is there a meeting that i can attend on this area coming up? That would suck not being able to experience somewhere that I've heard such great thing I about.

That is the problem, we don't know.

He got his trails mixed up. He was thinking about Boulder Carnage, not Holy Cross.

Thanks, Volcom. That is quite a mixup. Glad we all looked into it though, it certainly got some attention. And it does look like it was at risk, if not quite slated for closure.
