I didn't take many pictures. We blazed through Kane Creek. Chris Davis is really getting good with his FJ and those new tires seem to grip well

View from the top part of BFE down to some of the camping spots and where the big tent will be

Showing the club colors in Camp (thanks Dan for helping me put them up)

The first three pics are from Cliffhanger and the other two are from Metal Masher. I hope next year I will have the 80 in shape to tackle some of these trails myself. Thanks to Bill, Steve, and Kurt for letting me thumb a ride. It was great to meet some new people and get to know others on a deeper level. That was super fun!

I forgot my camera, I am glad you guys didn't..here are a few from my BlackBerry phone..

When we pulled out to do Kane Creek on Saturday, these guys were getting ready to hit BFE..This might be the coolest Toyota I have ever seen. There were two more smaller versions but I did not get a pick of them.

yes it was. I was real happy with it. Very comfortable, quick to setup and the changing room is a nice feature. It's nice to be able to climb down the bed ladder inside your enclosure. I also had plenty of room for two chairs a table and my duffle bag.

Did the tow rig have Kanook plates on it? That looks like Rutledges Twisted Custom creation. He picked it up last year at BHCC from them. Beautiful! He was pulling it around with a custom Mog at that time.

I have met and wheeled with him several times. Mostly in SD but he has been to CM too. When I first met him he drove a very bad arse red FJ-45 with a non US 6.5 turbo diesel. That thing screamed! Heard rumor that the axles in the twisted Customs buggy came from that truck and he is "returning" that truck to daily driver trim. Kevin Kuhn knows him well I believe.

Pretty funny that all of us had the issue at once (mine was repaired last year, but developed a hairline crack barely visible, 1/4" long). It is a known issue, that routinely gets ignored or inadequately addressed in almost every case until it happens.
:lmao:
Crossover steering is the cause. I bet minis aren't the only ones to experience this... just sayin'... we should look at ALL the modified vehicles in the forward corners of the frames for any cracking. I bet anyone with a welder, or Moab Outpost, will be busy this year.

RockRunner
03-18-2010, 07:50 AM

Uh... I did not do the IFS steering box install or bracing though d00d, that was done already I think? I don't remember. IIRC I used the Allpro triangle braces but I wouldn't count on those based on recent experience.

In the words of Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday... "VERY instructive..."

I am happy to help; I think we have the nuclear solution to the issue.

We did the total conversion with the steering box bracing. If it is cracked I'll just weld plates where I can and weld the crap out of it. I really think you already welded the crap out of it so I am not to worried, if it is cracked oh well, something to fix.

Red_Chili
03-18-2010, 02:20 PM
I have a 3/16 plate extending the steering box plate up to the inside corner of the frame. Moab Outpost did that for me last year, for $45. At the very bottom of that is where the hairline crack is starting, right in the corner. My plan is to weld 3/16 to the back of the crossmember with a diamond end to it to not create a stress riser, lay a good bead in the corner between them, then welding in two triangle braces. I might triangle the spring hanger as well, but mine is 1" less drop than Rudy's or Cheeseman's.

1" body lift means there is no radiator clearance issue bracing that inside corner.

It is tempting to run a second DOM tube left to right as a second crossmember... but I doubt I need to add weight to the Chili unless really really needed.
