I know you guys said it was small  but I had no idea it was this small.

I bought a Yaesu VX-3R online last week and it arrived Tuesday after Moab :( I opened the box and was blown away, I literally yelled WOW and some of my co-workers came over to see what the excitement was all about.

This thing is SMALL, I nearly loose it in my hands. It looks like a fake radio that you would give a kid. Maybe the ones that were filled with candy:)

I took some pictures next to my Black Berry to compare size, I am sure most of you have seen one in person but for those who haven't you will be blown away. I am thinking it may be to small for me but I am sure I will figure out a way to hard mount it in the truck but keep it portable. This radio is going to be great on the trail guiding folks up that have hams also.

Here are some pictures for you guys;

Front view next to the BB
Side view BB is a little thinner
Flat, WOW THAT IS SMALL!!!!!!

Yeah sweet radio, huh? And with an upgraded antenna, you'd be able to hit most of Moab from your shirt pocket.. http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/uploads/smileys/tinfoilhat2.gif

you pass your test yet?

Working on it, and NO I haven't used it to transmit;). Actually I haven't even listened to it besides FM radio.

I need to find the next test date and tell the :Princess: Sharon when I am doing it  Last time she put her high heels down and I was unable to make.:(

Why are you shocked? The Blackberry can do about 1.5W and the VX-3R can do about 1.5W on AA batteries.

BTW, there's a test tonight...

For you guys it is a no brainer but I am still impressed with all of our "tiny" electronics we use in our daily life's. I see on a daily basis what they are doing with the electronics that go into space flight  It is just amazing what they can fit in 1/100th of an area from 10 years ago.

Tonight is out, date night with Sharon and cabbage........should make for a comical night :D :thumb:

Between $170-199 eBay has them for $140 plus 60 shipping and up from there. There is one on there right now for $199 that includes 3/4 batteries and a little pelican case. I nearly bought that one but got lucky in this one and got a killer deal.

yeah.. i was going to say HRO or hamcity online. I think the local HRO will match hamcity if it's lower. That way we support those guys local.

I was just on eBay looking what they were going for and spotted the one I bought. It had 24 minutes left and was way below the prices posted. I sniped it for $3 more than it was and shipping was only $5.99 by USPS.

With the savings I can get three extra parts like an antenna, battery and mike :D

Is it a non-US VX-3E or a domestic VX-3R? IOW, does it happen to be one of those grey market ones from Hong Kong? Just asking because the cheapest I've seen VX-3R (US-market one, e.g. the one with the warranty and right default repeater offsets) is the one from HRO.

RockRunner

It is US but used. Was pawned and never picked up. I just got lucky for once. Wasn't even ready to buy but figured what the heck, I sniped and got it.

What's the deal with the Hong Kong ones that are $150 + $50 shipping? are those the grey market ones? I think I'll just go to HRO..

The Hong Kong ones have a couple of issues. One is that Vertex will not honor the US warranty on them, partially or primarily I suspect because they don't carry the FCC approval. The auto repeater offset will not be correct for the USA, so you have to program all of them in, which is tedious if you have to add them by hand in the field. Plus, yeah, $50 to ship them (if they show up).

That's awesome. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while. Even a broken clock can be right twice a day. :-)

What peripherals should be added to this radio to use it as your primary rig? I'm convincing JT to step up to HAM this fall. Do you need an external antenna? is a seperate mic a good idea?

RockRunner
07-28-2010, 04:53 PM
For a primary I would advise against it. It is only .5 or 1.0 watts so the distance is very limited. That is my biggest complaint and the lack of a key pad. During CM I was across from the big tent and could barely understand folks using their HT's in the tent. I would suggest he get a normal size HT and buy a mic, external antenna and a car charger. After that a protective cover, holster or some type of carrying device and an extra charger/batteries.

Just my opinion after having used mine and my full size HT.
