Looking for some spares:

1. 75-78 Birfield and front axle shafts
2. Rear axle shaft (long side)
3. Rear drive shaft

Let me know if you have something to sell.

The 60 & 40 short side axle shafts are the same, the long side is different.

Let me look and see if I have any 40 long sides left over.

I do have a long side FJ40 axle, very nice shape, splines are clean, no rust. $35 and you can have the FJ40 rear axle housing it came out of too. That way if you ever bend your housing you already have a spare.

What year is it from Randy? According to SOR, the 73+ shaft is different than earlier models (removable race?). If it works, I'll take it.

Nobody has a birfield for me? :) I know, I should switch to the 79+ birfs.....

Hmm, I know the front axles were coarse spline if they were pre-73 but I'm not sure the same applies to the rears. I thought all of the rear diffs were the same spline count as far as axles go.

Ige? UB? Treeroot? Need some expert input.

Matt, you're golden on Randy's rear short side axle. Remember your birfield was only available for 3 years, so it may not really be that easy to find.

I got a set of birfs... can you use them?

spline counts are probably different huh?

Matt are you gearing up for Moab? Or just prevention?

Marco, what are they off of? If they are off of 1/'79 and later FJ40/FJ60 etc. axles it will be the "short" style. Matt can use them if he uses the bolt and washer trick if he replaces one out on the trail, otherwise they are too short. Or if he switches to Aisin lockouts then he will have the right length.

I used the bolt and washer trick on my 40 before before I switched to longfields and it worked fine.

My axle is a long side unit but will fit his rig fine if it's a 1976, everything after mid-74 was fine spline. For some reason I thought he was asking if it would fit a pre-73 rig.

the inner axles I think all the way back to '68 or so were fine spline; it was only the birfields that were coarse spline from '68 until mid-'74. And rear axles should be interchangeable all the way back to '68 or even earlier I would think. Easiest way would be to check SOR.

I have a complete set of front inner and outers. How does $100 for the set sound?

Ok...the info is flying now. Don't know the bolt and washer trick - is that instead of the outer c-clip on the axle to hold it in place?

marco - as far as I know, the birfs are the same except for the length. Mine are a bit longer.

For the rears, it was SOR that indicated there was a difference in rear axle shafts. 74+ is fine spline with non-removable race; 73 and less is removable. Maybe it doesn't matter?

Chris - Do you know what year your set is?

I like things simple, and the less mixing and matching the better. That said, I'm looking for emergency spares, so I guess I can't be too picky....

.

They are fine spline. Not sure what year. They may be FJ60 birfs. The short side inner is.
