No, that was not a rhetorical question. Is it just me or is the tranny/t-case from an '85 FJ-60 longer than the combo from my '76 FJ-40?

There is also a 3" spacer between the tranny and the tcase, the motor I used on the 40 was out of a complete 86 drive train from a 60.

However, I think IIRC, you can use a front drive shaft and have the right amount of DS out back.

The 60 will be a split case....your 40 is a one piece case....thought you knew that silly boy! :rolleyes:

I know they are different, thats why I bought a split case, but I didn't know it was longer. This blows, it completely screws the math for the rear DS. Fuggit maybe I should just 4-link the rear.

Does anyone have any idea how much longer? I am trying to avoid pulling the old tranny and t-case out of the parts pile and reassembling to measure.

There are two different FJ60 split cases. The cutoff was mid (April or so?) 1985. The later ones have the spacer. From what I've read the difference is about 4". You can get a couple inches by flipping the main (bottom) leaf on your rear springs and redrilling the center pin hole on the rest of the leaves, but I'm not sure it will be enough. That moves the rear axle back some. It gives a little more rear D/S length than leaving it as-is, and a lot of people like the extra wheelbase for stability. You'd would still have to have your front D/S retubed longer with the longer t-case though.

I have already flipped the rear springs, and I am planning on custom driveshafts as I want to put in a Toybox and its SOA. The combination of the Toybox and this tranny (it has the spacer, its 5/85) are going to make the drivetrain kind of long and my rear DS rather steep.

Is there a mod to remove the spacer, to make it shorter in length? What's the spacer for?

I just talked to Marlin and they can set up the Toybox to run without the spacer, so I actually only increase drivetrain length by about 2 3/4 inches.

Based on my conversation with Marlin today it seems the spacer was added to make the 4 speed the same length as the 5 speed so they could both use the same driveshafts etc. as the H55F is longer than the H41/42. Basically the spacer fills in where the 5th gear is in an H55F. :hill: :bowdown: :beer: :flamingo:
