this is the same older gentleman who sold the 45 to the "nice young feller". Only was asking $1600 for the 40, but his last email (2 weeks ago?) said the same "nice young feller" had offered him $5000 for it.

T

I made sure it wasn't a 45 ;) He told me it was a 40 and already sold.

MDH33
01-21-2007, 04:11 PM
It doesn't look too bad really. That rust wouldn't scare me off (it's no worse than my '73) but cosmetics are my last concern. Plus if it is a 77-78 that's the best year IMHO to be looking for, assuming it still has the stock drivetrain. Doesn't look like it's run in awhile, so depending on if you can get it running to check the mechanicals I wouldn't hesitate to make an offer. I recently offered a guy $2000 for one in similar condition that ran, but he wouldn't bite.

Treeroot: When you looked at it, how much were they asking, and did it run?

Good luck! Hope someone can save this one and get it going again.

I ran a Carfax on it just for kicks and it is a one owner vehicle from CT. I asked John what the underside looked like after 10 years in the NE and he said "Not too bad"

It's about 1K pricey IMHO. Pretty low miles though. If it is PERFECT and needs NOTHING and has had the timing chain replaced per the factory procedure (also replacing the HG and checking the head and block for square and surface finish), or had the motor completely and professionally (not shadetree) rebuilt (you'd be surprised what passes for 'rebuilt'; often a valve job), and had nice and fresh and properly done paint (not covering bed rust, but with it actually fixed), it might be worth it.

If it was the truck I really had been looking for and it met most of the above but not all, I might spring for it. YMMV.

But that is a pretty rare truck to just bash around in traffic. For a DD, a newer truck would be more comfy. I picked up a '93 22RE std. cab with 150K for my son for $3500. This one would build into an awesome wheeler.

I can almost guarantee the bed has - or has had - rust issues.

Let me know if you want me to run a CarFax on it.

Thanks for the tips, I might go look at it if it's still available. Looks like original paint in the pics but who knows. I'm starting a new job and need a daily driver, but it's close to home and I'll likely ride the motorcycle most of the time so I wouldn't be treating a truck like a beater, more like trying to distribute wear and tear evenly between the 60, 40 and truck. :)

A later model would make more sense, but I don't do much that's sensical when it comes to vehicles. :hill:

The other alternative is to dump another $3grand into the 40 instead and drive it everyday.

Hmmm...
How about a $1500 small car, and $1500 toward the 40 with the rest made up by you doing all the work (or paying RS members to do stuff compensated by beer), and saving that there increasingly rare 40? :D

What about a 3FE? IIRC Mike Goodknight over in GJ swaps them in 40s and said they are pretty much bolt up. Don't know and not sure you'll find a 3FE for less than you can just pick up a 2F for...Did you verify what tranny you'll have in the 40?

Still waiting to hear from Oleg on the tranny/tcase. Interesting options...for now I just want to get it up and running as cheaply and as quickly as possible. After I tinker with it for a few months I will have a better idea what I want to do with it. Semi-stock fun driver and mild off-roader is what I have in mind for now...doubt I will ever want a serious rock-crawler.

I wonder how hard it would be to get the sunroof controls in there?

Reading through the MUD threads on this the two parts are actually separate - i.e. the part you, I, etc. have in our 80s today with the dome light and sunroof controls is one piece and the surround with the sub tank and altimeter is another piece. I would imagine you can swap out that center part. IIRC new these are VERY expensive....The downside (beside all the wiring which I think isn't too bad when you don't have the compass) is you need different visors or you have to mod your existing ones. Here is the MUD thread discussing the sub console:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=129669

If this were tan I would bid on it just to have it in case I ever get to the point where I add an extra tank. That is unless the bidding got too high :hill:

I wonder what kind of spacers you'd need to put these on an 80? At a past Cruise Moab, there was a guy in an FZJ80 who had Toyota Sequoia wheels. They looked really great, and made the vehicle look much newer too.

It would be different - the FJ (from observation, not from personal experience) is geared for a low RPM torquey motor and therefore the Chebbie swap works pretty well. The 4Runner drivetrain was set up for a motor that can spin. But there ain't nuttin' wrong with a 5VZ, dat's fer shur. Could be cool, but it won't be the same as the 4Runner.

Problem is that they don't usually have seat belts, and I think you'll hear the same speil from everyone that a 40 is not a good/safe vehicle to haul little ones in.

A lot of the Conferr seats had storage boxes under them, which is a nice feature.

subzali

people have done it though. I can see how it's potentially unsafe when the little ones are next to the rollbar in the jumpseats, but if you had a bench seat with good belts I don't think it's any less safe than any other vehicle...but I don't have children.

40's are top heavy and prone to roll, no padding inside, lots of metal edges... even with a good forward facing seat with belts it seems like an unnecessary risk. Just my opinion, which is usually not worth much. If I ever have kids, we'll take the 60 and leave the 40 home. :thumb:

Timm,

My 2 cents but I'd look for something more car seat "friendly". The confer seats are pretty much a straight "L" shape that IMO wouldn't hold a car seat right. I've been chasing rear seats for my 40 for awhile now...The bestop ones aren't bad and they have ones that "fold and tumble". Right now I'm either going to go with a 2nd row Durango seat with the center part cut out or Trailblazer front bucket seats with the integrated seat belts. I've got two older Durango middle row seats so if it works I'll post up some pics. Having a Durango I know how the kids seats fit and I was able to measure for the fit. And, if all works out they will fold and tumble as well :). The issue would be the belts which is why the front buckets out of a Trailblazer with integrated belts would be REAL nice...size wise though they are big (comfy) and might look a little odd...

However, if you do decide to put little ones in the back I would highly recommend a full cage for added safety even if you don't plan to offroad much in the 40 :thumb:

If you follow this link to Bestop, I think what I have is the second bench seat from the top. The stitching might be a bit different, but that's basically it. Fits between the wheelwells.

I just got a seat from a Jeep for free. Vinyl basically new...fold and tumble...post up, you can get them for cheap. he also threw in the seatbelts.

Just mounting in the rear, making plates so that the bolts won't rip through the floor...and a metaltech rear cage is in the works.

my parents took us kids all over colorado/blackbear engineer everywhere in an FJ40 and Jeep...hell we didn't even wear seatbelts!!! just sat on the rear fenders holding the rollbar.

With a full rear cage, good carseats/harness setup...they will be safer than many other cars that roll (cages keep the roof off of ya...trust me on that one ;) :flop:

I live in Evergreen and see that thing driving around all summer long so I can vouch that it moves on its own power and seems reliable. Nice looking rig, much cooler up close, I've drooled over it sitting in the little bear parking lot a few times. Seems like a real good price for a 40 that nice.

I'll give the guy a shout, and take a look at it and inquire about service records etc, and see if I can take it for a spin. Any chance that if your buddy on the east coast wants it he could fly to Des Moines Iowa and pickup my 4Runner and drive it here lol. I'll send you a pm after I talk to the guy. I could possibly run it over to Joe at CTS, but well see what the owner has to say.

2 inch body lift
4 inch IFS lift That there is about worthless. Well, the 2 inch BL will allow raising the fuel tank, also known as the factory rockslider.:lmao: 7" lift is TOO MUCH.
Opened up AFM, better air flow off the line. Warning Will Robinson, not a good mod, can lead to ring land grenading...

Electrolysis. I'm sure John will probably disagree. I've see quite a few defenders that look horrible after a 15 years. Worse that many vehicles of it's age. My friend had a 93 in virgina that looked like it was 30 years old. paint bubbling from electrolysis near every point there was steel close by. Alum bodies aint that great IMHO.

Hmmm... I'm always looking through CL and I don't recall this one. Looks like a good rig for under a grand. Anyone know it's history?

A friend on mine bought it up in the mountains somewhere and had it in his cabin garage for about a year. He towed it to boulder last summer and started working on it but ended up purchasing a running 1974 FJ40. Now he has too many projects. I think he would like to keep it as a future project but we all know the reality of that situation.

And you know it needs a few grand of maintenance right out of the box because it's low miles and wasn't ever performed. Prices are coming way down - a 2003 100 with 44K miles sold on ebay yesterday for under $25K, and that thing was mint and loaded. I'm not sure any stock 80 is worth over $10K with the gas price hit unless it has a HG PM and all the other 90K service completed.

Of course, a SC would be mint now that they've been discontinued...

Not the JDM ones that you can get from CDan but just the regular Toyota OEM filters for various Toyotas.

Saw it on eBay and it seems like a good deal (at least compared to the cost of JDM filters)...Was thinking about trying to put together a group buy but I've got 6 JDM filters left which should last me a couple years ...

Anyway, thought I would post this up for all you 80 owners in case you use these and in case it really is a good deal...$27.50 + $9.45 shipping = $36.95 total so ~$3.70 ea
