This is my buddies pickup. He is asking $1500. It had a brand new engine and a knuckle rebuild about 8 years ago. Only 13,000 miles on the new engine and knuckle rebuild. Then my friend needed a bigger truck, moved out of his parents house and the truck was driven very little over that time. Now he is moving so he wants to sell it. Its in pretty good shape and I'll post some pics soon. He got it running but it probably needs a little fine tuning. Its white. He would probably take low ball offers but it really is a nice truck for the age so be nice.

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/331339111.html

Neither of us know the true value of these trucks so if the price is way off please let me know.

It's a little high IMHO. I'd think a stock rig is is more like 9k US but they are still rare so it may be inline and it's very clean for a Canadian rig. Probably more so than mine. It's pretty easy to bring over. about $2-400 at a RI in vancouver and your all set. Personally I like the 85. It was the only 12v 70 sold in canada out of the 3 years. The 86 and 87 are 24v. It makes things like radio's, bulbs, starters much less complicated.

I can't think of anyway to respond without sounding negative. I probably know both of them but I have a mental block at the moment. No, they are not mine.

The one Nakman posted has a sign that says Pine #1 hanging from the windshield and a police badge aove the ignition.

Hey, a 45LV... http://denver.craigslist.org/car/396644242.html

Owned by "Alan D." I think he's dreaming if he seriously thinks he can get $3600. There's not a single body panel that's undamaged. The hood is dented in. The rust is like it's been opened with a can opener. The bucket seats look terrible, and the front bench seat (at least he saved it) is nothing but springs. It's got an ancient V8 that would need to be replaced for a resto.

Maybe I'm wrong -- what do you think, Mike? I can't imagine that this is worth that kind of money. But maybe they are so rare that they're commanding big bucks.

I haven't been pricing them, but if the rust is low $2k seems like a fair price for any running 4x4, but what do I know?

That's a great deal on an early truck if it is actually rust free and in good shape. Do it! :thumb:

Be sure to look for frame rust damage behind the cab, right at the spring perch. Both sides. Not a showstopper, but certainly a bargaining chip!! You may have to remove the bed and reconstruct the frame. Not that hard to do, welder in hand. The frame rusts from the inside out, so you may have to tap with a hammer to determine if you have iron foil instead of steel plate back there.

They have been known to part ways, the front and the rear of the truck, so yeah, it's important.

I love the body style of the very first 4x4 minis. The drivetrain (engine and tranny), not so much. Relatively easy to swap in later drivetrains though! It will make working on a cruiser seem very hard in comparison.

$2000 isn't out of the question, if it's as clean as it looks. It's a long-bed, which may affect how it wheels, one way or the other.

I bought a '79 from its original owner, and after driving it some, I loved the mega-ground clearance and style, but the ride was considerably worse than an FJ40 (both had worn out springs), it was gutless, and got 12 mpg in town and 15-16 on the highway. Without EFI and PS, it just wasn't that much fun for me. I whee;ed it on my property, and upon hitting a bump, I completely left the seat and my head hit the steel roof. Hmm - note to self - wear seat belts even on your own land.

The long bed ain't THAT long, and don't write off a clean one if you find it. FWIW the longbed rides nicer.
The ride is entirely dependent on the springs. Put some springs from Alcan on (if you want spendy but extremely nice), or Marlin or AllPro springs on, and ride like silk. Oh, yeah, and crossover steering. You just need an IFS steering box, easy to put on (strengthening kits available), and I can help with that.

Hulk
09-13-2007, 08:41 AM
The one I looked at last night was a long bed. The front springs were worse than flat -- they were actually inverted. That said, it still rode OK. You're right: the long bed didn't seem all that long.

Red_Chili
09-13-2007, 09:18 AM
The front springs were worse than flat -- they were actually inverted. Pretty common. They came almost inverted from the factory and didn't take long to go inverted! You won't find one without a rusty bed, my '82 started the cancer before it was five years old. The beds were US made in an attempt to avoid tariffs. And you could see the difference in the workmanship. The bedside downward extension seams attracted water and started rusting right away.

One thing to consider is one of the way cool flatbed designs out there. They needn't be redneck in appearance, and can be the equivalent of a 4x4-oriented utility bed. Then you can bob the rear and have none of the disadvantages of a long wheelbase (except the center just a bit, but no showstopper). Just sayin'.

Or you can go here for fiberglass beds that will never rust, and are quite well made:
http://www.toyotafiberglass.com

This sounds dumb, but I'm going for cute. I'll probably give it a medium height lift with some bigger tires, but the overall exterior look will be close to stock. Flatbed won't be an option, but those fiberglass beds might be awesome! Thanks for the link -- lots of things to learn.

I understand the intent! Kind of a classic car thing with a 4x4 outlook. Like a 3" lift, crossover, and 33s? You can do a lot of wheeling and still keep it nice with a setup like that.

my mistake, didnt realize it was just a one of. He bought it from a kid who damaged the engine and he is using some of the susspension and other parts to built out another 80 with a 350. It really looked like it was one hell of a monster when it was in good shape and quality of the work still looks amazing, have to give the builder a lot of credit. I cant wait to get that bumper on mine. Also had some headers on there and a very good cloth interior if anyone is looking.

There is no Superchargers for the 94! 93-94 had the par valve and OBD1 with fuel door rather than OBDll and MAS. The vehicle must be a '95.

I work with the PO, I did not realize that he got rid of it until I saw the ad. I asked him and he said it was because it would NOT pass emmission testing. The truck is a 94 but he said "the supercharger is a 95" not sure what he meant. If somebody wants more info I can out you in touch with him

The Patrol is mine... Most are actually stock, but the FJ axles will fit under them. That is about the only FJ parts I use. The Patrol rear axles are fragile and getting difficult to find. Only makes sense to go with the "cheaper" alternative! I believe there are only a handful that have been converted to rear FJ axles. I went even further and swapped out the front too.

Anyone is welcome to swing by and look at the Patrol if they want. Just PM me.
