pretty tough to pass that up. I will be doing a bunch of home projects to get the house ready to sell...was thinking of getting a beater truck to haul stuff, don't want to mess up my pretty 80. :D Any idea how hard it would be to get it to pass Denver emissions?

In Colorado, the seller must provide a current and valid Emissions sheet prior to sale, it's his responsibility to get it to pass, not yours. At least, that's how it worked last year when I sold Clifford. Of course, he could just sell it as a tow-away, and get around the rules. Or you can get 90 days worth of temp tags, then sell it to Magoo!

First you need to find out why it failed! Blue smoke, high HC, rusted cats/exhaust, no cats, missing or dead emission system.........

Really? I sold 3 cars in the last 4 months, and bought 2 new cars. I don't remember any emissions sheets involved in any of the sales....I researched on the DMV site before I sold the cars. did I miss something??

From the Colorado Department of Revenue site:
http://www.revenue.state.co.us/mv_dir/wrap.asp?incl=emissions

Q. When do I need an Emissions test?
A. Change of ownership requires a new passing emissions certificate supplied by the seller at the time of the sale. Tests are required for registration renewal when indicated on registration renewal card. Vehicles 1982 and newer will receive a test which is valid for 2 years. Vehicles 1981 and older will receive a test valid for 1 year.

Thx!

huh.
None of the cars I sold had a problem getting registered without a certificate supplied by me. 2 of them were current on emissions, but I did not give them anything. The 80 I bought did not come with one, and I registered it with no problem....what am I missing here??

Where do you live? If you're in Park County, you may be exempt.

El Jefe
01-18-2006, 10:29 AM
Depending on where you live, you may not need the emissions certificate to register your vehicle. I don't know if you are required to provide one as a seller in the emissions-exempt counties however. I've only lived in counties in Colorado where the emissions is required...may be worth a call to the guvment to confirm.

Having a 60 at one time I will say that the worst thing to work on is the emissions system. All that spaghetti and little vsv valves, air pump, rail, cats, carb, etc is a nightmare to diagnose. I guess the only consolation is that you could probably spend the money, get a waiver, desmogg it and and try to pass next time for the 25 year collector plates. A little denatured alcohol may cure everything though.

I tried to get him to bring it last Monday to our final class. It has a HF/VHF/UHF mobile rig and I wanted him to demo the capabilities. Too bad it was too cold to do so. He doesn't brng it to meetings much, and since the Pr*do is his rig of choice, it hasn't seen much driving since CM 2006.

You're looking at an absolutely beautiful Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 with 60k miles. The Toyota Land Cruiser can transport up to eight passengers over the toughest terrain, but it's also a comfortable long-distance cruiser. Inside, you'll find all of the features normally associated with top-level luxury sedans, including heated leather seats, power sunroof, automatic climate control, and every power accessory under the sun. The Land Cruiser comes with just about everything, including leather seating surfaces, remote keyless entry, one-touch up/down power windows, and an in-dash CD stereo. This Land Cruiser has the Navigation system, and a special treat, two headrest TV's, and even a passenger flip down visor TV! Now those long road trips will be a breeze! That ad was posted a month ago, so I would bet it sold. Never know though, did you try contacting the seller?

I think $5000 is a good price if the body is solid and the V8 conversion was done well. Sounds like it has a lot of extras on it that you would spend a bundle on if you added them yourself: winch, cb, bumpers, lift, V8 conversion...

I'm personally a fan of all-Toyota drive trains, but that doesn't mean much. Lots of V8 cruisers out there are well put together. I'm happy with the 2F and that's one thing I look for when buying a cruiser. That's just me though. If you're not a purist, no one will hold it against you.;)

Good luck with your search! :thumb:

...and the V8 conversion was done well. Sounds like it has a lot of extras on it that you would spend a bundle on if you added them yourself: winch, cb, bumpers, lift, V8 conversion...

How well the V8 conversion was done is very important. Often you can spend as much fixing a PO's mistakes when they did the conversion as you would doing one yourself. Some of the V8s that are slapped into Cruisers are old, tired, and worn out or rebuilt junk. You will find a lot of people that prefer the original Toyota engine (F or 2F) and a lot that prefer the swap. Whatever you decide YOU want just make sure you aren't going to have to spend tons of $$ fixing stuff you weren't planning on. It will happen anyway but getting someone reputable to look it over for you can save you a lot of $$ in the long run.

I've always had good luck with having Rocky Mountain Cruisers look rigs over for me and give a no BS honest appraisal of what he (Ron) thinks. He will be one of many that will tell you a poorly done V8 conversion will cost you as much if not more to fix.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the addiction :hill:

That is exactly right it is a total "the PO said" he doesn't know actual miles and probably doesn't know for sure if it is a true 327 or not but that is no matter. I am also a Corvette owner/enthusiast and can easily check the #pad on the block against my books to verify that question. He did say that it does have a new or newer edelbrock manifold and carb on it.

He also told me that bedsides the rust in the barn doors there is a little up by the front turn signals and then some in the pan by the roll bar mounts. Claimed that the frame is original paint and good condition and not rusted through or anything.

My only dilemma is that of course he also told me he has a potential buyer in Idaho that is suppose to call him tomorrow and after seeing more pictures of it and will probably buy it sight on seen so if I really want it I would have to look at it and make a decision before tomorrow afternoon. Like I have never heard a story like that before but who knows...

Also all the work V8 conv, lift etc was supposedly professionally done.

Now you have me wondering though if I should spend a little more and get this yellow one I found on CL. He is asking 12.5K and others atIH8MUD say he is asking to much but I was wondering if it would be worth 10K?

Here's a link:http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/car/248941162.html

My Biggest hang up with the six is I am afraid it will be a dog on the road. I used to have an 81 Toyota pickup with the 4 cyl and 33's on it and it was so much a dog on the road I sold it for that very reason. Other that that it was great offroad. That is my only reason for wanting a gas guzzling V8. I am wanting to find the most nuild rig that I can find at the right price so I don't spend all of my money building it up.

The Toyota 6 is a torquey bastid but you definitely won't win any road races :D. But their reliability and torque are their strong points in many eyes. A well built V8 in all honesty will get as good, if not better, gas mileage as the Toyota 6. Ask around and you'll probably find most 40 owners get maybe 12 (+ or - a little) mpg...I think I get around 10 :( but often it isn't being driven far and being run to keep it fresh. I guess in the long run it depends on what your planned use is. Off road you'll want the torque more than HP but on the road HP is nice...Then again, how fast do you really want to go in a lifted SWB vehicle :hill:

As for finding a built up rig. By the most built up rig you can afford (with what you want and done right of course) and you should be $$ ahead. I think I had almost $15K into my '76 when I sold it and it wasn't near what I wanted. Bought my '74 for less than that already built with just a few things left to be done. Problem for me is last of ability :( so I couldn't build my own rig and couldn't afford to have it built for me. I'm great with bolt on mods (who isn't) but when it comes to welding, fixing, etc. then I'm lost...At least for now
