View Full Version : 40's Only Run 2010

MDH33
06-28-2010, 04:10 PM
Who:

FJ40 Owners!

What:

Just what it says, a run for Only FJ40's!:zilla:

When:

Saturday, July 31. Meet at 9:00 in Conifer/Aspen Park. Meet at the old Safeway lot (where Staples and Checkers are now, Not the current Safeway).

Where:

Georgia Pass, the Swan loop, maybe Webster (?) Same as the 2009 run except I plan to complete the loop and not get snowed out this year. ;)

Why:

Because it's fun to wheel with a bunch of old-school rigs once in awhile. ;)

How:

Dust off your 40 and let's go.

This is the Fourth annual Rising Sun "40's Only Run". The plan is to meet up in Conifer and head down to Jefferson along 285. We'll head up Georgia Pass and explore some of the trails. These trails should be mellow for any stock FJ40. There a lot of routes we can take, but we can decide depending on the rigs that show up. I hope all the 40 owners can make it. If you don't have a 40, you're welcome to ride along. :)

Didn't we do this in September last year?

Yup, and I won't do that again with all the snow. Summer weather with the top off the 40 is hard to beat. :thumb: Pretty sure I did the run in July and August other years, but last year I was in Ouray every weekend all summer.

Right now the plan is to enter and exit the trails along 285. However, if anyone wanted to go back via I-70, they could split off and head that way, no problem. The beauty of these trails is that there are a lot of combinations and routes to choose.

Thanks Ricardo,
I still remember your help on the carb when I got there last year, that was some quick troubleshooting .

If someone can bring a USB drive 4 gig or more, I can transfer the photos to a club member before we head home. Last year some photos were not used because of low resolution (I was stuck sending them through E-mail).

Hope we are not subject to using chains again this year...it was fun anyways.

I would like to join in the 40's run. New to the club but looking forward to it. Where and when does the meet-up take place that day? I would imagine it will be me and one passenger. Have never done a 'group' trip so I am not sure what to expect and so on.
My 40 is a 73, stock F engine, about 3" lift and 31's under it. Welding up a spare gas can rack now and getting ready for this trip specifically. Thanks guys (and girls)!

It's at 9 AM in the Conifer/Aspen Park area, which usually means the Safeway parking lot but Marten will post up the final location before the run, just keep monitoring the thread.

All of the trails that day are pretty easy, just make sure your rig is in decent mechanical shape. Bring: a lunch, lots of water, clothing that is suitable for 90 degree to 40 degree weather and a great attitude. It should be a lot of fun.

Dan and I did a pre-run of the loop today, should be awesome! The scenery up there is outstanding, even in the rain. Thanks again Dan for coming along on the High-Speed Rally of the route. :headbang: Post some pics if you can. My camera got seriously tweaked when I took a spill not looking where I was walking.

Should be a great run and the trail is passable by stock rigs with capable drivers. I'm guessing if we meet at 9am in Conifer, we'll be back to Conifer by 5ish if we stick to the Swan loop. We can extend it by doing Saints John/Deer Creek/Radical HIll/SOB Hill/Glacier Ridge, etc. :thumb:

There were a few other loose and steep sections of trail, but everything has easier bypasses. We didn't get to try SOB Hill on the way back out, but that might be a possibility if anyone wants to run it.

Just a suggestion to everyone planning on attending: I would highly recommend a CB or HAM in your rig. It's probably the best mod you can make if you're planning on doing group runs. This trail has a lot of intersections and with a larger group, it really helps as we relay directions while moving down the trail.

Also, don't forget to wear good footwear, bring a hat, sunscreen, lunch, lots of water, raingear, and common spare parts/tools if you have them.

Again, the meeting spot is the shopping center off 285 in Conifer that has the Staples/Checkers. It's the exit next to the Bradley/Sinclair gas station. Meet at 9:00am, Satuday July 31st.

We'll be on CB4 and HAM 146.460

What is that behind Dan in the first pic? Looks like a top fuel dragster with the body lifted in the up position or maybe a sprint dirt cart with the wing :hill:

Hey Martin, I think Rudy did a run like that back in early June called the "Retro Run" and it was a blast! All of you guys with that "old iron" should have been there!

So I put my 40 up on jack stands in the garage tonight after some challenges on Holy Cross this weekend. Nothing serious...Made it back to camp under my our own power. Some mods and upgrades in the works....

Looking for an empty seat for the "40 Only Run" and maybe a second one for Zach too.

Broke the tension pin in the steering shaft to the Saginaw gear box going thru French Creek so ended up using a clip from the Gecko's HiLift and the electric fan thermostat was working intermittently causing the engine to run hot and like crap....so I ended up wiring the fan directly to the battery to get back down the trail and then home. Also looking to ditch the carb and go to TBI so it just runs better overall and will probably pull the head off while I'm at it and have it redone too. So limited to runs that Idelle's open 80 with 33's can handle for now.

It sucks!!! Things spin. Rocks fly. You stay. Dave you have a lot of projects on your to do list. A stitch in time saves nine, is so true. After the blow off work run, I figure I got through a couple of spots on dumb luck (and experienced eyes spotting me). Took some lines that I was not built for nor was my skill level where it needs to be for them as well. It opened my eyes to the fact that I need to fix some stuff and upgrade others before I go on particular runs. Plus I need to learn to wheel differently on rocks verses the mud I am use to.

Robbie taught me how to power brake and that made a huge difference in what I could do. I have seen people with open vehicles go through areas that locked rigs have problems with. Why?, because of tools like power braking, knowing how to pick a good line and not overpowering through an obstacle.

I did not engage my lockers on slaughterhouse and went up and down through that area using the power brake method

Power braking - With the left foot on the brake, rev the engine up to 1000 RPM, use your left foot on the brake to control momentum while keeping the engine RPM constant.

On the rubicon, there was a guy there that had done it every year for over 20 years with no lockers.

If we meet at 9, I'm estimating we'll be back to Conifer by 4 or 5 if we do only the Swan loop. There will be places to bail towards Breckenridge or Montezuma along the way as well if anyone needs to head back early.

Gary Wagner suggested the power braking method to me this year on Gold Bar Rim at Moab and I have been working on getting better at it since then. Nick commented to me on HC Saturday, how well the 40 was working as he thought I had a front locker 'til I told him otherwise. On the BOW Slaughterhouse run, I didn't even realize 'til I was back at the trailhead that I put the TC in Low, but forgot to pull out the vacuum 4x4 shifter. Power braking in an automatic takes some practice, but it works. Slow and deliberate gets it done more often than not. :thumb:

I am working on a new fella I met in boulder with a fj45 to come out on the run. We will see if it happens. It is a sweet rig and Jake was very friendly and eager to jump in. I assume there is room?

How long will it take to do the run? We have tickets for a show at Red Rocks that night.

We are headed to see the show at Red Rocks as well. My plan was to split off and head home a little early. we can head down together if you like.

I am not sure what route we'll take to get home, but we should be back with plenty of time to make it back down to Red Rocks from Boulder.

:eek:What the..? Dan you were my barometer for the "will Ricardo's rig make it" cause of your tire size. With your upgrade, I'm going to be in trouble for sure.

:lmao: Sorry Ricardo. I really thought it was time to move my 40 up to the 1970's. FYI I made the pre run just fine on the 29 inch tires. :hill:

Hey, if I can run Black Bear on stock wheels, 3/4 worn street tires and stock suspension in my wife's FJ Cruiser, you can do this.......:D

Not quit fair. Wes is such a good driver he could probably take a Subaru over stuff that most of us would need 33s and a locker.

Mine has no radiator, is missing some hoses, the crank bolt and pulley are sitting on the floor, and the crank pulley key is somewhere along side them.

But I have some parts, and two evenings to get 'er done.

I'm thinking of coming with the group if one tire holds air and it starts, find out in the morning, will meet up with the group at top of crow hill.

We might need to arrange a police escort. Were going to have a large number of very slow 40's going up some of those hills :hill:

Right on Mike, I'll keep an eye open for you. If you have a CB or Ham, we'll be on 4 and 146.460. :thumb:

I won't be making this run, but if there is a northsider that could bring the tuffy console (sold to Randy) to the run, that would be great.

Looks like some rain for tomorrow, so be prepared for the weather. Raingear, warm clothes, and proper footwear are highly recommended especially if you're called upon to assist with vehicle recovery, repairs, etc.

9:00am at the Conifer Staples/Checker lot. Take the Exit at the Bradley/Sinclair gas station if you're heading West on 285. If anyone is trailering, you can drop your trailer in Jefferson where we'll air down.

We'll be on CB 4 and HAM 146.460.

Should be a great day regardless of the weather. :thumb:

For those who plan to top off or fill up, note that the Bradley/Sinclair is generally 5-10 cents less per gallon than most everywhere else around.
