View Full Version : Buying a 100

Mendocino

Ann and I have decided to buy a 100:D. We are getting rid of the 4x4 diesel crew cab that has served us well with the exception of the blown tranny in Moab two years ago (176k, priced to move at $11k if anyone is interested).

I have done a reasonable amount of homework including following Nakman's 100 journey and I think we want a 2003 with ~80-95k. It seems to me that a reasonable price for a rig like this would be ~$24.5k on the high end with the 90k service completed.

Today we drove a 2005 (http://boulder.craigslist.org/ctd/1982178450.html) at Boulder Toyota that was significantly overpriced and did not have the 90k completed.

I have talked to this guy (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=286537646&dealer_id=65683297&car_year=2003&make_desc=Toyota&search_type=used&distance=100&model_desc=Land%20Cruiser&origuri=%2Ffind%2Fused-Toyota-Land+Cruiser-cars-for-sale-Phoenix-85003.jsp&address=85003&cardist=9&standard=false) in AZ as well as a guy in CA that sold his 2003 w/86k and the 90k service for $25k today.

I would appreciate it if you guys could keep an eye out for a suitable rig and provide any comments on our intended rig. :)

Jeff you should be able to find quite a few in that range. check autotrader, which seemed to have more than cars.com for some reason.

I remembered when some complained that RS was becoming an 80 series only club. Now I'm starting to feel like I drive old iron again.

That one CL one is in Paradise Valley ==> RICH! Seriously. If you do something like that and need to drive down to The 480, I might be up for it next week. That is, I need a trip down there to see my dad and I could drive down and you could drive the thing back. That looks like a nice rig.

I told Tim, don't overlook Oregon and Washington. NO sun damage, perfect operating temperatures.

Thanks fellas, keep them coming!:) The guy in AZ posted some additional photos here (http://s1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/designashirt/).

Does anyone know why every 100 seems to have the plastic damaged just aft of the transfercase shifter and right of the transmission shifter?

The crew cab is a 2001 Ford 4x4 7.3L w/Leer topper. I'll post it on Craigslist this weekend and post the link here too.

$25k for 75k seems like a pretty decent deal. I don't think I'm cool enough to have a Lexus and I am really not a fan of white...

Probably a coffee spill. You see it on the 80s as well.

I don't like the white on 80s but for some reason, white on the 100s looks really good.

I'll keep hunting.

I knew it was just a matter of time.. c'mon Paul give in! :D

And I'm not a LX guy either, fwiw, but they often do often appear to be a little better taken care of in a 8-12 year old vehicle.

Tim,

How many rigs did you look at before buying one?

nakman
10-08-2010, 03:21 PM
I can't remember how many on line... tons, and I did enough research to know exactly what year/price/miles/maintenance/lockers/color combination I wanted. Really made the selection process easy, as a much smaller % to see in person applied after that criteria was established.

I think I saw 3 actual trucks- one super nice one (but more $$, like what you want), one trashed one that met all my criteria, then one nice one that also met my criteria..

Christo,

My understanding is that they put the bigger engines in 2003 and later. From a drivability standpoint how would this rig compare to a 2003?

Personally, the only 100 I would own would be pearl white and have an L on the cool projector headlighted grill!

I thought they were all 2UZ-FE. Interesting. You'd have thought Toyota would learn from the 3FE-to-1FZ change in the 80 that when in doubt the American wants more power.

Yes but the 2003+ has got a whoppin' 5 more hp, from 230 to 235. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbieUZJ100.htm

The better benefit IMO of that year and later is the 5-speed transmission

The later ones have the same basic engine but with VVTi!

This morning we drove a 2002 Lexus LX470 (http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/1997050924.html). It has 97k on it and they were asking $22.9k. Overall it was VERY clean. The dealer stated that the 90k service had been done but he did not have clear proof that it had been done but stated that they had the name of the mechanic that did it "on the side" of his day job.

I realized that I really do like the added features of the 2003+ model years (5 speed tranny, heavier drive shafts and bigger u-joints, gated shifter, five more horsepower).

The search continues...:)

I have been emailing a gal in New Mexico that has a 2002 LX 470, 98k, no service, its black and looks really clean. She says she'll take $18.5k. I want a 2003 so I'll pass but this may be a good deal for someone else.

Thanks Paul, this is too spendy for me. As I dig into this deeper, I think I can find a clean 2003 w/~95k for <$23k. I'll be patient...

I thought I found "the" rig today. It was a 2003 LX470 w/78k and really, really clean. The guy was asking $24k and said he would take less. It was driven by a woman and no kids had been hauled around in it (did I mention is was super clean?).

Anyway, the guy sends me a bunch of pictures and the things is really in spectacular condition. In reviewing the center console pictures it was hard to see the shifter, but it did not look gated. I called the guy and asked if he was sure that it was a 2003 and he said: "Oh yeah, I put the wrong year in the CL ad, it's a 2002.":(

Argghh! I was ready to fly to BF Texas to pick it up, but I want the five speed. The hunt continues...:)

Well the F-250 just drove off. If you are ever selling a used vehicle charge extra if the buyer needs to finance it.

Anyway, I hope the AZ 100 is the one. It sounds very good and I will arrive in Phoenix on Friday morning, have a look, if it passes my inspection I have a PPI scheduled at the local Toyota dealer. Assuming all is well I will close the deal and drive it home. I have a friend in Payson and will stay with him on Friday night and then drive 12 hours on Saturday.

I am honestly as excited as an 8 year old on Christmas morning. I hope this one pans out.:D

I bought the AZ 2003 for $20k even (he wanted $22.9k) and am driving it home from Phoenix. The Prepurchase inspection was basically perfect and the technician let me come look at it while it was on the lift. The compression test was excellent. The only issues so far are that the carpet does not look great and it needs wiper blades. Pics to follow.

From Phoenix to Payson, AZ I got ~18.3, which really surprised me. From Payson to Broomfield I did not do as well due to a significant headwind and got ~15. All in all I was pretty happy.

The vehicle had no mechanical issues on the way back other than the wipers and alignment. I'm very pleased.:D

Wow nice find Jeff!

Chris,

Thanks for the compliment.

I think finding this was actually a lot of work. Paul's CL script was super valuable. I also developed a pretty comprehensive checklist that I used when calling sellers to rank order the vehicles I investigated (I'll post this eventually). I also drove about 5 total 100s. Driving local vehicles really made a difference when comparing interior quality as well as general mechanical condition. I also judiciously used the pre-purchase inspection. I called multiple local Toyota dealers to see who had the best PPI program and then went into the shop to talk to the technician.

Lastly, I was ready to walk if it was not what I had envisioned when I actually saw it. This worked well as the seller dropped his price $1500. Moral of the story: know what you want, do your homework, trust but verify, and don't be afraid to ask for a lower price.

Too bad the :Princess: nixed the 100 series off her list of likes :(
