Just a tad bit tired and dirty now.

I'm back.

Most exciting thing, aside from the snow on the passes, was coming 10' from being creamed by a speeding pickup as it made a 50mph turn from SB Federal onto 23rd Ave. Cops had a similar looking pickup stopped across Federal. After I slammed on my brakes to avoid getting hit, and flashed the off-road lights, cops gave up on the guy they had stopped and went after the speeding one. A cyclist lady next to me also was close to this. Welcome back to the city eh? TALK ABOUT COMING IN HOT!

Coming in HOT!!! Hahha...lots of good laughs on this one and amazing scenery. I'm glad the little 40 made the trip without rattling itself apart. Whew...pulled in at 9:30 pm last night. LONG day of driving but totally worth it. That's the first time I have hit 5th gear on a gravel road baja style. Nothing quite like coming over a crest, spying skid marks in the dirt and realizing you have to haul a top heavy 40 down to 20mph to hit the wash in about 60ft! Ouch...really makes me want to go to coils and pnue bumpstops.

Yep pretty cool stuff out there. Long baja style roads, views, snow sledding, wheeling, pancakes, dinner gang, killer propane fire pit, beer, crazy lady on the trail, 9 mile hike, "your wife called", flute playing in the canyons, crapper views, birka siting, tire repair class, burgers at Ray's..

Did I miss anything?

Lessons learned....
-Don't pack bottles of beer on their sides in your fridge, or you will have 14 beers empty when you arrive. If I was an 80, probably fine, but a 40 with 2" of travel, no.
-Feed Perry often
-Trail braking at 50mph in a curve is a bad idea in a shortie on hard pack roads. Extra pleats in my seat now.
-I don't need extra fuel for this trip so don't pack 2 fuel cans. :)
-Blue Rhino is not the same as a blue flame.
-Bring a pair of chains for at least one truck in the group....not really necessary but conditions just a touch different and we could have used them.
-Just carrying a spot receiver is not the same as pushing the BUTTON. ;)
-there is hot chili, then there is HOT chili. Shazzam. My face wasn't the only thing burning.

Stopped by the old folks house (parents) and my 75 year old dad brought me up to date on what's been going on while I was gone . . . including him rolling his 1,000+ pound Scag zero turn mower on top of himself while zipping around blowing leaves at my sister's house. He did a full roll and it landed back on its tires. He's got some bumps and bruises but no broken bones. Crazy old fart.

This series is on The Granary Trail. It's a crack in the rocks that you pass through on the trail. There is a cave in there that is plenty big enough to house several people. The shots progress from where you go into the crack, through it, and then looking back at it from the other side.

Thanks. Goblin was pretty cool but dang windy. I had no idea visitors were allowed to walk everywhere around them (no trails). Daylight was disappearing and I did not get to explore any side canyons before heading out and north on Timber Mountain Road.

That entire area definitely needs some more exploring. I bought a couple lottery tickets last night. :D

Alright. This series is from the rest of the Granary Trail, ending at the granaries. The NPS signs there dated them between 2,000 and 8,000 years old. Way to nail down the date!

If you insist. :hill:

All the pics I have posted so far are in the vicinity of The Doll House (circled in green). This map shows our route in from the Hans Flat Ranger Station. It was about 42 miles to the campsites and it took us right at 4 hours to get there from the Ranger Station. That was Friday.

http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/uploads/mountaingoat/111210/111210map1.jpg

After spending Friday and Saturday nights at The Doll House we headed for The Maze Overlook Campsite on Sunday morning. This route was about 39 miles and took close to 4 hours again as I recall.

Yes Martin - kudos for planting that idea. 6 of us 9 did the 10+ mile loop with 1,500' elevation change. Its so much easier to hike at that elevation and was mostly level hiking (gradual canyons except for in and out). I was prepared to go it alone, but thrilled everyone went. Your idea of going to Maze Overlook that way on foot would have been great. A night in the canyon bottom would be really cool, and little gear needed for one night in the desert. I want to do more hikes now.

A couple more switchback pics showing the snow covering we encountered. While most parts weren't too bad there were a few steeper areas where all you could was proceed as slow as possible, try not to lock up the wheels, and slide down for 20-30-40 feet. Kinda like a log flume. Good stuff.

The floor of the Maze. We made a hike, close to 10 miles in about five hours, down into the Maze to view very well preserved ancient rock art. The climb down into and back out of the canyons was pretty steep and treacherous at times . . . especially the climb out with tired feet and jelly-legs. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh156/woodsmanspics/2010%20Nov%20%20The%20Maze%20Canyonlands%20Utah/IMG_1993.jpg

Been reading a good book during this past cold snap, seems though theres a few petroglyphs that we missed. Craig Childs does not mention the "Maze" but everything points to it while reading. Apparently one of them is a so called map of the canyons with a little man at the interance, the other, a snake that gets hit by an arowhead of light on the face during the summer solctice, on top of telling you the rest of the lunar year.

When we going back?

Yes, but its supposed to be a well kept secret. There are quite a few hidden treasures around that are like this. Usually its someone has to show you. But some are leaking out through the internet and youtube.

I guess the idea behind it is to keep them special, and safe from idiots. If you have to work at something to find it, it means more when you do.

I'll give you a hint. Its somewhere between Gatherer canyon & Hidden Valley:D.

If you dont find it, I might show a very small group. On a swear-on-your (????) that it will be respected basis.

I know it can sound kind of snobish, but take the morrison dinosaur tracks on the hogback as extreme example. Visit any of the pertoglyph panels and most will have vandalism from people carving their name, or their version of a bighorn, to shooting them with guns.
I was on a river trip with a guy, and we floated past a large flat stone with dino tracks right across the center of it. His comment, "I wonder what it would take to get that out of here? It would make an awesome outdoor table" Dont know if he was serious or not, if 1% of people who think like that act on it the damage they do is done.

In remote central WY on BLM land, Outlaws Run 2009, I found an amazing fossil print of a leaf as big as a dinner plate on a loose rock. It was perfect. I left it for someone to discover again as I had. That's how RS members roll. I get what you are saying and I think we all do.

It was a great trip, and I'd be up for it again. I don't know how I will get it past the wife this year, but I'll figure it out! :) Wish I could take her 450 for those high speed sections though.

It felt like it was all high speed sections to me. :blah:

Hey! I haven't let go of my spot dadgumit! I got a hall pass for the triple bypass, which I didn't cash in b/c it moved on me. That means I still have a hall pass to use, and guess what it will get applied to. Heh....

Not to worry, your on the list and the dates will hopefully work for you as, well. Your job, should you choose to accept, is to get Larger a Hall Pass and save him a seat between you and me!

Hmmm, what's this new username all about, Mr Sandstorm ?

Should I start calling you Caribou instead of Chris ?

I still think you should slap some Sandstorm paint on the 4Runner.
