Nakman was kind enough to not only lend me a couple HT's to monkey with, but also lent me a 2800 and we did a quick mount up in the 60. THANKS! :D:thumb:
I'll be commuting home from Lodo to L'ville on 146.460 if anyone is out there. Even though it's not much different than CB, I feel like I need to practice the ettiquette a little.

What times are you on the road. I can never find anybody when I am driving on either simplex or duplex.

Tuesdays and Thursdays my non-kid-drop-off days (M,W,F I drive the Subaru). So when I'm not riding the bus, I'll be in the cruiser. I'll usually hit the road around 5:30-6ish. I'll post up if I drive on Thursday.

I'm going to that guy's house to look at the FT-8900r after work (4:30ish). I'll give a shout out on 146.460 when I hit the road back to Louisville. I'll be playing with low vs. higher power on the 2m radio to check the reach.

Shawn, it wouldn't hurt to do some chatting on the local repeaters if nobody's available to chat on simplex. Just something to think about. I've been thinking about throwing my HT in my Tundra for the time being and see what it does.

CardinalFJ60

What's a good local repeater to hit on the way home? Colo. Connection? another one to monitor? (145.145??)

RockRunner

I was on 146.460 from 5-6 with no contact and also on the CC 145.310 I believe. Spoke to about half a dozen of people from Co Springs to Ft. Collins.

Ever since I have been working on Johns house I have been monitoring both frequencies from 4-6:30 about depending on when I leave. I figured I would Dave at least since I know his radio is always on.

Of course today I was watching the Thursday night football previews on the phone so I had plenty of company.

What repeaters do you guys use the most or monitor more?

CardinalFJ60

I was on the road after 6...pretty much on 146.460. I then flipped to the 145.145 and heard a little chatter. I also heard those folks on the CO Conn. from the springs.

so cool.

and hey....check it out!

Sweet! I brought my HT to work this morning, am going to charge the battery during the day and hopefully catch someone this afternoon. It's kinda hard though, my commute is like 10-15 minutes. I think I'm going to split today sometime around 4:15 or so.

CardinalFJ60

I'll grab the HT, too. (not driving the cruiser today). wait...might not leave until after 4:15..we'll see.

I got it from a reeallly nice older guy with his General license. it came with the remote mount, original box, brochure, harness and it's been in his house. It's like new. :-) for much less than new he's got the quad band antenna to go with it (diamond 8900a). Since it's all together like that, I'll start that way and if needed investigate different antenna options.

So what are used 8900's going for these days? I might be selling my 8800 and antenna and was wondering what the market is like for used rigs.

CardinalFJ60

He was asking $370 for it and I'm currently negotiating for his antenna - quad band Diamond 8900a. Not sure if/where we'll land on that. It's like 50" so I'm not sure about mounting. (been PMing with some folks about options). Too bad bad I'm not further along on my 40 or else I might be interested in that 8800.

Colorado Connection is a great system and there to use. But it's not considered good form to ragchew locally on it. Thus, calling on it is encouraged, but remember to be brief or move to a local repeater or simplex if possible so that the whole state doesn't have to hear us complaining about Denver traffic or tying it up so that someone in Grand Junction or Breck or whatever can't get in.

The local repeaters that seem used most often are 145.145, 147.225/145.460, 146.940, 145.340.

I keep thinking about this, and since there are some new folks let me qualify: the only additional etiquette you'd need on the connection is to leave long breaks between transmissions, which you'll likely do anyway since it's on a repeater, but it's a little longer giving all the machines enough time to do their thing. .You could even invite folks to break in periodically, if you kept a longer QSO on the connection, that would be a nice touch.

Now you may prefer to not broadcast yourself all across the state, and that's just fine. And I do support the practice of moving the conversation to simplex when you just want to yak... but I think most folks would rather hear "something" on the connection than "nothing," there's an added piece of mind I get when I hear others on the air particularly when I'm out driving around, it lets me know that my radio is working and I could contact someone if needed. But I wouldn't be too shy about using the Connection, and getting yourself known in the community a little bit. You never know, you may call out for help some day and someone else may say "hey I recognize that call I think I know that guy..." which is one of the reasons you got into ham in the first place.

...I did finally CQ on 145.460 and made contact with someone...very broken contact on low power in my driveway. Shouldn't I have had a better connection? ( I think so).

I haven't set the SWR on the Ham, and the temporary spot I have my antenna installed may not be helping.

L'ville has some propagation issues! You'll find that unless you are on the ridge by Harper lake or the ridge south of Superior or the ridge headed down to Boulder that the send/receive strength just isn't there. To the east seems to be fine and if Jeff were home you could probably talk to him on min power all day long. Shooting to the south or west is a crap shoot. The 145.145 repeater is reachable most of the time as is the 146.310 and 145.460. Simplex just wont go far in this bowl. I have also found that going south along Indiana to the club meetings has a lot of dead spots (my guess is the high tension power lines that parallel that route).

Thanks for the feedback Dave and UB.

RX was pretty strong, over 50% on the smeter. And from his feeback we were both hearing eachother fairly broken up.

UB...GREAT to know! I live below Harper Lake at the base of that hill (same street as your pal Sean with the blue J**p) so it makes perfect sense regarding the propagation issue. On the way into work this morning, I picked up the "friendship net" (??) on 447.575. listened to folks from Winnipeg, Portland, TX, Calgary...they were coming in VERY strong. (I just need an external speaker for when I'm rolling so I can hear the QSO :o ).

Is there a meeting tonight? if so, I'll jump back on 146.460 for the drive from Lodo to the meeting for another test.

Shawn, Sean mounted an external speaker in his 60 on the passanger front speaker (near the window). That works realy well! No road noise drowning out the 2M:cool::beer:.

Since I had yet to actually connect with anyone since I installed the 8900 in the 60, it sure was nice to hear "K0NAK monitoring" yesterday. I could hear Nakman great (simplex) from 36/church ranch while he was at 120th. Although my TX seemed to break up a little on his end. once we hit the "310" repeater it was clear as a bell. so cool.

I had the little SBB-1 on the 80, which I was driving yesterday. It's a great trail antenna but it really lacks for simplex around town. It can hit all the repeaters though.. but it's what I keep on there most of the time because it will fit in the garage. I was blasting out at 50w to hit Shawn, but couldn't hear him that well... but that's what the repeaters are for.

ACVH monitoring. :-)

Looks like we're just missing each other Dave. I rarely get into the car before 5:00, usually shout out between 5:15 and 5:30 on the way home. Mornings I'm later than you, I drop the kids off at 7:45 then head in, but typically between the .310 CC and the radio news that's enough stimuli for me so I don't often call out.

When I drove to Moab last Thursday I was on the CO Connection net where the Net Coordinator had people call in from all repeaters for signal check and had everyone answer a question. He was in Colo Springs and I was on the Vail and then Glenwood repeater.

I also reached Perry and Sean in Glenwood from my driveway and later Farnham.

Overall I was surprised how quiet the Connection was the rest of the time.

They also have a 2000 net every Thursday which is to explicitly test the connection. That's the one with the weekly question.

That was it! He liked having the mobiles.
