Do they make a good handheld? Or what handheld is best? My Employer plans to buy a couple, they may pay for me to get licensed as well. :hill:

This one is teh awesome. (http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-010606) There are several Yaesu hand-held transceivers that will do the job quite well with fewer bells/whistles as well.

The Amateur Radio Service is a voluntary noncommercial communication service, used by qualified persons of any age who are interested in radio technique with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest.

Not that I'm one to nitpick stupid regulations, but none-the-less the FCC is pretty strict about the noncommercial (e.g. 'without pecuniary interest' means no financial interest) nature of Part 97 rules. There exists a whole bunch of FCC spectrum dedicated to commercial users and I only mention it because I don't want want any more reason for additional spectrum to be taken from ham radio. Now if you're just talking that he's interested in getting into the hobby too, then forget I even brought it up.

In some ways getting a commercial license is easier than a ham license, too. Fewer technical questions.
