I've found a promising FJ40 for sale. Pics are at:

1) Anyone familiar with this 40?

2) Here's what I see in the pics that's noteworthy:
-Rear bumperettes - one gone, one bent
-Possible weird exhaust system
-One rear seat missing
Anything else jump out at you?

3) Can anyone tell from the pics if it still has smog equipment?
The engine is a 1980 2F, says the owner.

Thanks.

step is also bent, looks like it had a trailer plug there that the bumperette is now wrapped around, so look for shorts there.

75 or early 76, so check to see if it has drums or discs up front. i'd guess discs since i've never seen the tapered warns on drums, but can't say i've really looked either.

it does appear to have the air rail, but i would've thought that it should have had a lot more vacuum tubing for emissions. although i don't have a lot of experience. it's also hard to tell as the engine is one giant tanish brown blob in between two outer fenders. ;)

Looks a lot like my stock '76. I see the VCV on the driver's side fender. Looks like there is still smog stuff (at least some) in there. Rear channel doesn't look too bad.

That is Jeremy Lawer's 40, he works in my building. I think he told me his uncle repainted it. The truck was very clean the last time I saw it. Probably been 10 years or so now.

What's that fan (looks like a carb cooling fan, but in the wrong place) on the front driver's side of the engine bay? Mine does not have that...

Some had the carb fan in that location possibly if it was from California.

I believe it is a 76. The coil has an ignitor, which started in 76. I don't think it is a 77 because they have the flip-out side rear windows. The carb fan is in the same location as my CA spec 76. The amount of vacuum spaghetti looks about right. I've never seen a dual exhaust on a 2F before - only on V8s. My 76 does not have that sender (or BMSV) on top of the thermostat housing - I thought that started in 78? Maybe it is a sender for an aftermarket temp gauge? But I am not seeing any extra gauges on the dash or under it? Oops - just re-read the initial post where it says the engine is out of a 1980. That would explain the t-stat housing.

Looks like a pretty nice rig. The hubcaps and stock rims are a nice touch. Ige, those Warns look identical to the ones I have on both my 71 and my 76 - IWO, you can't tell whether they are coarse or fine birf (drum vs disk) by looking at the locking hubs.

I would spend some quality time crawling around underneath to observe the leaks and rust...

looks like bondo and paint chipping away from around the rust holes in the rear quarters. I would bet there is more hiding too. I would look pretty closely at the body from underneath and make your offer accordingly.

I like how the battery looks so fresh and clean compared to everything else.

Checked it out on tuesday. Has a new dual exhaust (weird), moderate
rust in rear sill and corners, no recent smog test. Nicely original.
I may make an offer.

IMHO the "Hulk" is pretty stockish and you should probably take a look before deciding on this '76. If I had The $, I'd be first in line for that 40.

It looks like there's a lot of potential panel replacement lurking under that rear floor, rear sill and rear quarters. If you enjoy fabing and welding like I do and have a welder and fab tools you might enjoy the work. If not, it's gonna cost you a bundle $$$$ to get this body back to normal. Just don't get too caught up in the "price out the door". ;)

I've got a "72 that I've had since "90 going under the knife this winter for many of the same issues and it has much heavier gauge metal but looks no worse on the surface than this guy.

Good Luck Phrog!

Not a fan of Big O?

Agreed, if I bought this 40, on the list would be new tires...
