Very cool! You're going to have fun. You'll have lots of opinions on gear and ultimately it comes down to what you want to do with it. I have the Yaesu 8900r which is a quad band and more than I need (2m/70cm/6m/10m) but no aprs. 2meter is where most of the day to day comm. Is going on. I might mess with 6m some day or maube not. I'd say look at the Yaesu ft350 it's got the aprs capability. I hope that helps get you started. There's much more knowledge elsewhere In the club.

congrats on passing. i have yaesu's ftm-350r although it's still sitting on my desk and not in the truck. i hate having to schedule time to work on the truck but with 3 daughters, i don't have much choice. :D

kenwood's d710 is another good choice. some say it's a bit better than the yaesu but i like the yaesu's display much better.

Quad band?? Does that cover the CB band as well? Is there a way to eliminate the need to have a CB in the truck? :hill:

You just passed the license test, what do you think the answer is to that question?

Dave posted this up a while ago, I know for sure its still availalbe, I have emailed back and forth with the guy a couple times. It is a good deal.

I would definitely defer to you on it as I already have one that is serviceable for the time being.

Yes, that Kenwood would make a great first radio!

KD0NIC Also have one of these http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-010606 that i can use. Hooked up with the local Ham club and plan on attending the January meeting. Planning on taking the general and maybe the extra exam at that time. Looking forward to getting on the air. :hill: Apologies in advance for neophyte questions. :o

No HF rig yet but i went to the local Ham club meeting (SCARC) and was someone there has some older rigs that they may be willing to loan out.
:thumb: Almost finished installing the Yaesu FTM350 in the TLC, I'll post up some pictures tomorrow. :hill:

I will definitely take you up on your offer :thumb: if I cant find one to use until some $$ can be saved up to buy something. The idea of having some sort of portable HF RIG is very exciting, but the cost of another expensive hobby is already taking its toll. :hill:

HF rigs don't have to be really expensive, lots of nice used one generation old radios. Look for a DX-70T(H), FT-840, IC-718, etc, should fall around $250~$500. They lack the sophisticated DSP of the current radios, but don't give up much at all otherwise and have pretty darn good filters to boot. Happy hunting!

I thought of that, it was a trade off, the convenience of having the speaker and cable connections accessible was irresistible. The case is pretty friggin rugged i imagine it would survive a few spills and splashes. :hill:

It is a comet sbb-1 seems to work pretty good around town. Have to wait and see how it performs in the sticks. :hill:

How goes the HF rig search?

No luck as of yet, kinda broke right now, and looks like we just bought a new house. With a three car garage and an 1100 SQ FT ADU basement man cave, plenty of room for a nice HAM shack. :thumb: Probably counting on someone in the local HAM club loaning me something. Planning on taking my extra test at the FEB meeting so hopefully by then I'll have something to play around with.

Did you like the material?

DaveInDenver

Congrats all you guys getting your extra!

I failed the extra when I gave it a shot. Honestly, it's irritating since I'm even a member of the IEEE Antennas & Propagation Society, but that doesn't help at all with operations and rules. So I downloaded the questions and started studying, reading through them when I have a few minutes here and there.

Feels good to have it over and done with, pretty tough material to memorize. Now i need to put what i've learned to use.

Yeah thanks! I never studied for the tech and general, so this readin' and learnin' stuff is weird. :-) It's truly humbling to get a 50% on a QRZ practice test the same day that one of your projects is launched. It's really a good thing!

I have used this site and really liked it. If you register it keeps your score and you can select the specific areas to get tested on.

Excellent Dave.

Had a good clear QSO from Denver and Arizona on 40M last night.

How about will give it a try?
Due to mine narrow band antenna I have to be on 7.125 to 7.200
