View Full Version : Emissions year of this engine?

I'm trying to figure out the emissions year (that is, which year
emissions manual to buy) for my recently-acquired FJ40. The body/
chassis is a 1976. The dizzy has points, so it's a mid-1970s. The carb
code is 6F9, which means it was made in 1976. It has a smog pump
and various other smog stuff - see pics.

Any guesses as to which year this smog stuff corresponds to? The PO
said the engine was a 1980, but given the dizzy and carb, I'm not so
sure.

Also - any ideas as to what those disconnected ports on the
thermostat housing are for?

That is a late model valve cover on there.

My guess is that the emissions control devices on there are '76 vintage.

The fittings on the thermostat are thermal controlled vacuum switches. Refer to the vacuum schematics for your flavor '76 and whatever year 2F the engine is see where/if those vacuum signals appear on both.

Make sense?

Thanks PabloC. What's a good source for vacuum schematics?
The underhood decals are missing on my 40.

Phrog! Try this link www.sor.com/vin.html Serial number info that might help you.

looks like '76 emissions to me. The ports on your t-stat housing are your BVSV. The Haynes manual has a diagram that covers stuff pretty well; that'll be a good source short-term. Long-term I'd buy the Emissions FSM.

x2, Emissions FSM from Toyota for your '76. You should be able to find what year your 2F is by the number on the block as well.

Thanks all. Serial number on the block corresponds to a 1980, So
it's a 'hybrid' (aka mutt), apparently: 1980 block, 1976 carb/dizzy/
emissions. Interesting.

Sounds more like a "hybred" :hill:, not to be confused with a 'hybrid" :confuse2: for sure! :lmao:

At least now you know what you're dealing with ....good luck Phrog!

So check and see if the valves on the thermostat correspond to an '80 2F or a '76.

Not sure, but you might have the option to put a '76 t-stat housing on the '80 to make your emissions easier?

I'm in east Boulder near 95th street if you ever want to do a comparison. Mine's a 5/76 and mostly original minus the air pump.

I'd say that is mostly 76 era federal smog...the thermostat is probably later.. whatever the engine is.
