Well it appears the search is over...

While looking at a 2006 Sport Edition 4runner today at GO (it had rust, I quickly walked away), I bumped into a rare find... a 2009 Trail Edition 4runner.

This has the A-trac button and the rear diff lock button..Basically a 4th gen body set up like an FJC...I don't think they realized what they had. The 4runner has not had a rear diff lock sense 1999, much like the Land Cruiser.

It is Silver..Not my first choice in color but definitely nice looking.

Couldn't walk away and after trading in the FJC (I did pretty good on that end of the transaction, surprisingly), I am the new owner of this rig.

Many mods from the FJC bolt right on...lift, skid plates, wheels +tires...UCas, Lower links...

I have a ton of work to do now and will post pics soon.

Awesome, sounds like you got a pretty nice rig.:thumb:

PS The 2000 4Runner still had the E locker after that I don't know.

I hope you look at 100s and wish you got one every time. :p:

How much of the FJC did you strip? Nice find on the '09, is it the V8 or V6?

Congrats, but dude...are you serious...not even a teaser picture?

That is the truck I wish my :Princess: drove. The new Trail Editions loose the full time TC option:mad: And in my experience if you have the V6 it will get 25+ MPG in stock form.

Congrats on the find. I think that's a great choice.

Awesome find. I say stick with 33" tires for maximum driver challenge and have someone like Rockware or Armorology in the Springs custom build you a rear bumper. Armor the heck out of it underneath.

And Tom is right that the last year for the e-locker (and manual tranni) was 2000.

Is it a 4th gen 2009 or 5th gen 2009, Chris?

I thought all V6 had 2WD-AWD-4WDH-4WDL t-cases or is that a Trail Edition feature?

We very rarely got above 20MPG all around with our 4Runner, particularly at 65+ it's mileage dropped like crazy.

5th gen loose the full time case unless you buy a "Limited". This is my largest complaint with the 5th gen. $th gen I belive your correct on the 4WD options.

Working at the dealership driving many 4th gen 4Runners I always got 20+ according to the trip computer thing. Don't know how accurate that was though. Best on V8 was 23 from Durango to Cortez. Best on V6 was 27.1

Ok now, everyone sit down and take a deep breath....

Repeat after me: " Is this guy nuts?" The answer is probably yes to many of you but again many of you already knew this.

I returned the Trail Edition 4runner this morning........

Wife was not super thrilled with color or interior and the fact that I went rogue and nutso over the Trail Edition features and bought it without her thumbs up, caused a bit of a rif...She had already test driven two Limited's..Try as I could, we discussed the pros and cons...The bottom line was the Trail Edition ended costing us 15K for the A-trac and Locker and did not drive as nice as the Limited. It does not have leather, heated seats or automatic seats, the Tom/Tom radio sucked.. It just did not have the same high end feel and finished look as the Limited...

Some of you have met my wife and know I am a really lucky guy/over achiever as they say..and she has totally supported me and the mounds of cash I have dumped into wheeling over the last few years, so the best way to keep on the trail is to make sure Mrs. Sandstorm is a happy camper.

Seeing how I am really done for a while on rigs and rememberring the old saying "You gotta love what you drive." We went with Plan B..My favorite color, Galatic Metalic Grey and her favortie interior, light grey leather....

Also we are getting the deal for about 8K out of pocket. So I can afford an A-trac chip/button (if available) and a rear Locker aftermarket or OEM.

I do believe this is it....But I guess you will have to tune in tomorrow to see if I kept this car for more the 24 hours....:o.

I do have a new car buying strategy for you...Go back the next day and tell them your wife does not love it, they will throw money at you, as they did this morning and I was tempted...

Also, if any of you want it, there is a silver Trail edition sitting at GO on Arapahoe.. They want 32.9 for it, you might only get them down about 1K. It is an 09, 4th Gen with 15K miles on it.

I am getting an 07, 4th Gen Limtied with 58K miles on it/all maitenance done on time. Colorado Car, one owner.

You can't make this stuff up, I am thinking this might make for a good article somewhere..

Dave Ramsey says that if you always drive nice cars you get used to driving nice cars...I tend to agree as my Tundra Limited, though 10 years old, has spoiled me, even compared to my dad's 80, which is in good condition and I used to hold on a high pedestal.

Good luck with the purchase, I like that color too :thumb:

I had to drive to Colorado Springs and back for a meeting tonight.

I drove the new mall wagon..Soooo smoooth..Ok this thing gets way, way better gas mileage then the FJC...

I am not sure about that ARB bumper...Christo, I want one of those blueberry bumpers...get crackin..:D

Anyway, I am pretty sure this is it! Really dig'n it..

BTW, have you seen the new mid size Lexus? That will be my next rig in about 5 years, they are only 52K and seem to be about as big as an 80. It is the equivelant of the new 4runner but better visibility and functionally seems like a better wheeling rig. But it is super bling..

Stock v6 4runner is 18 city and 22 highway...plus a 23 gallon tank

This fits what I like to do more of, which is the long desert travel runs.

100s are super nice but I chose the 4Runner Limited because it has the road feel of the FJC but the plush ride like the 100 and I will get better gas mileage then either the FJC or the 100.

Plus almost all my mods transfer over to the 4runner.

well all it is, is a new floor mat and they are not very good. I am passing.

First mod today was a bust....I read an article in Overland Journal (Gear 2010), where a guy modded his 4th gen for overland vehicle stuff and he was running the same TRD rims...But when I tried to install them today, they were rubbing on the front calipers...

After reading his article again the SR5 model comes with smaller calipers then the Sport or limited..

Get a set of Spidertrax Chris, My wheels are stock but I'm running 285/70R/17's w/o any issues after the usual minimal trimming. The recall is just silliness, anyone who can't make sure their floor maps don't interfere with the gas pedal shouldn't be driving a 5000lb machine.

I ordered sliders from these guys, they are not like this pic, the ones I ordered are not too different from the FJC ones,no kick out. 500.00 for the pair.

I am pretty sure I am going with the ARB front bumper, they support the FJC Summit and Cruise Moab.

Which by the way, I have been asked to present another recovery presentation at the Summit this year. This will probably be my farewell tour for the Summit, since I no longer have an FJC.

Well, today was a good day..Finally got the 4runner off the blocks..Thanks to Robbie, as always...

I started replacing rear suspension on Sunday, had to also remove the XREAS stuff...And of course immediately called Robbie for availability..

Went with OME 80 series shocks (60020) and Toytec Superflex coils in the back..

By Sunday night I had all Xreas removed and rear suspension wrapped up. Not bad for a newb..

Then Monday Robbie arrived and up front we dropped in my ICONS and LR UCAs, one of the UCAs ball joints was loose, so the great folks at Specialty Products in Longmont were very super and warrantied my just over 12 month old wheel bearing...Thank You Jeff!

We decided to grind the larger calipers down a bit to fit my TRD 16 inch gun metal wheels but.....we needed to grind so much to get them to fit that when we tested the brake pressure, we blew right through the thin metal with brake fluid....Grinding was of course against Robbie's and a few other's better judgement, but I felt like what the heck it was worth a try..

So we replaced with the smaller rotors and calipers and the 16s fit perfect, also decided to throw in a new set of Sumitomo's upfront and wrapped it up this afternoon by 12:30PM.

Robbie is a great mechanic and a super mentor. Not much more to say about that. Sorry I burned the first pizza on Tuesday.:o

I am super happy with the look and feel of the set up. The ToyTec coilovers give a hands down better ride then the OME 895s I had on my FJC.

The 255/85s rub just a touch on the mud flap when turning, so tomorrow will do some trimming. The spare is snug and will have to let the air out a bit to get it to fit without too much rubbing on the swing arm.

The first weekend..wahsed, removed the side steps, installed Lower Links, skid plates from FJC...

Sounds good Chris,

If you want to keep all the fluid from running out all over, lift all 4 wheels and let them hang, then remove the shocks, there is a valve about 12 inches off each shock, and it spins off with relative ease and has a one way valve type setting, so the fluid stays in tack but only of the shocks are extended, compressed they will leak out. The tubing is flexible and can bend to help remove. The parts are expensive and you might want to keep them and sell on mud or one of the 4runner forums..

It is pretty easy to remove, just takes time.

Well, I think the larger calipers/rotors are for towing. Only up front. The smaller ones come on the SR5 which is the base 4runner model and are the same as the ones on the FJC. Actually feels better now then it did before. But I am sure I can no longer tow a large boat...Small Pop-up? Should be good to go!

x2. I'm looking at upgrading my Tundra calipers, not downgrading them...

What is your bolt pattern on your wheels? My wheels are 6 bolt, you can have my rotors, they are in great shape. The calipers look exactly the same, so it might be that all you need is smaller rotors and then you will need to evaluate your rotor shield..Robbie had to trim my rotor shield slightly to get my smaller rotors/calipers to fit.

subzali
03-10-2011, 10:37 AM
Sorry Chris, didn't mean to make it sound like your calipers would work for my upgrade. On early 1st gen Tundras the TSB basically keeps the same rotors but uses the larger calipers with larger brake pads from later 1st gen Tundras to prevent overheating and pulsing. I think it's a 13WL casting number, whereas the stock ones are S13WE or something like that and are an upgrade for 4runners (not sure what gen, 3rd gen maybe). Anyway, looks great and hopefully you won't experience any brake issues :thumb:

Thanks Chris, looks like I'll keep it intact and give it to the guy who's helping me. I haven't seen any market for them but can see someone looking for a part. Mine has 115k on it so the shocks aren't worth anything.

I sure wish my budget included all you're doing! I'm going to Moab at the end of the month so I'll see what I decide after that.

Funny you should ask.. I was hanging with Christo the other day and he was teasing me that it would take 6-8 weeks...I said "na-ah" but he was right, as usual..

However, Mark from Shrockworks said it would be ready to go early to mid April, so I would have in time for Cruise Moab.

I think that is a yes. I am at the apple store now and that is one of my q's.

I am hoping I can download the the maps for the areas I am going to, use the spot puck to track progress and if needle communicate coordinates, etc..

Then I want to mount it some where in the truck.

It actually took me a second reading you post to figure out MAP meant map (paper kind) not short hand for Mass Airflow Parameter. Then I thought I'd poke fun at you for forgetting your map. Did I confess to you that the next day I realized I didn't have a map for porcupine rim? I got the free map on the way up sandflats. I just got the Wells Book after going to Moab for 19 years. Wouldn't you know it, Porcupine's not in the book. I have started researching the GPS apps for my i-phone, havent decided yet. I have a basic garmin with a tiny screen and a Gazetteer. I will always carry a Gazetteer. However I can't wait for the day there is just an arrow on the window in front of me.

Chris your truck is sweet. Tell me about the awning. I'm on the search for a new one.

You can buy a complete trailer axle with lug pattern of your choice with electric brakes for not much money.

No worries I realized when wrote out MAP, that I should have not capped it.

The awning is by camping lab. Mine is the smaller version, I think there is a bigger one. Price was great, $250.00

Fernando is the owner, nice guy, he is probably going to the overland expo this weekend. If Christo is going, you might talk him into bringing you one back, like the one Fernando is showing for less and no shipping.

It is a really nice awning for the money.

That is what I am using the puck for. The 3G gets u city updates or where there is cell coverage, since i am using outside of coverage, I wonder if it will work with the spot gps puck?

Not using iPad gps software

Additionally, I am in contact with an iPhone gps app developer.....

Got the airbags installed yesterday, with the Toytec Superflex coils....

I think this will be a good fit....Works really well. And the ride is plush compared to the OME medium coils I had on there..

For a guy that always packs too much stuff and intends on a pop-up at some point, this was a pretty easy and low cost mod.

Nice setup. I should've thought about air bags when I had the Superflex springs under my FJ. How do they handle it when the springs become fully extended (dropped) and then recompressed ?

My 700 lb Radflos handle like a sportscar on the road but they are really firm on the trail bumps. I may move to 16" wheels with taller rubber on my next set.

Caribou Sandstorm
11-01-2011, 09:52 AM
Do you still have your Superflex coils?

We could drop in some airbags for you while you are out here..

They seem to be ok so far. I did some research and Air LIft seem to hold up better then the Firestone brand. Got the original idea from Redline on Expo..Really nice guy.. Then I saw them on a Prado set up in Aus. Kind of standard OP seems like.

Right now I have the airbags with min air maybe 5 pounds and it is super smooth, no sag and I have my fridge and Tire gate tire carrier on.

I pumped it up when I installed it and it raised up almost an inch or so. You only run like 15-20 pounds in them..I didn't drive it like that but redline said it can get a bit bumpy until you find the right pressure to your liking.

I get a company car for my new job, so we are selling the Jetta Wagon, after the holidays... Melinda will drive the 4 runner and I wanted the ride to be smoother for her and the kids.. Plus when we get the pop up, the air bags are really helpful.

Might finally get a chance to buy a 40 or 62 this spring...

Woodsman
11-01-2011, 10:11 AM
Chris, I sold my OME medium fronts and Superflex rears to OKRA. With the addition of the fridge, slideout, drawer and rooftop storage cases, I am probably adding a few extra pounds but the front is still pretty stiff . . . when baja-ing.
