AHorseThief! Proud new owner of a recent Craigslist FJ40!

Come on buddy, let's see some pics of that bugscreened '73 V8J40 goodness! ;)

Since the bugscreened sbc goodness has been hyped, I'll post up some pictures and then, if my hand can take it get into some about me and my new FJ.

Craigslist pictures:

What really got me excited was the custom bug shield. I don't know that I've ever seen a FJ40 with a bug shield before.

It also has a 327 with a Holley carb:

I haven't got it at the house yet. The seller is rounding up a mess of additional parts and replacing a brake line that started leaking once the truck was washed and the mud plugging the hole in the line was removed. :hill:

Also, apologies for taking so long to chime in on my own thread, but on Sunday evening after yard work and making  I decided to stab myself in the hand. It's a long story involving beer, elk antlers, and a very sharp and stabby knife. It's much improved tonight, but still a little sore.

nothing custom..it's an old school universal fit bug guard. don't know if you can even get that style anymore. i was more into the shortys, but that was over 20 years ago;)

nice score, hope it turns out great for you

Maybe I'll cut it down. That should be an easy first mod.

Welcome:D. Nice looking rig with lots of different colors. What are you thinking are your list of projects/mods for it?

Welcome. We like 40's. :zilla: :headbang:

I've been informed by my :Princess: that since there is no rear seat and I have two boys that will be wanting to ride in it, the first project is to find them a place to sit and some seat belts to strap them in.

The front seats are pretty trashed as well, so if I find something that will work there while I'm poking around the junkyard I'll do that. I'm thinking Celica or Civic seats for the front as the rumor is they are a pretty simple swap.

After that I'm looking at a rear locker, possibly some new tires (the shoes on there have plenty of tread but are showing early dry rot signs), and then rust removal and general body work.

By the time I get through that list I should have driven it enough to know what I really want it to be. Also hopefully by then I'll have decided on a unifying color to paint all the various mismatched parts.

I'm looking for a rear seat with belts for my 40 as well. I've heard that the rear Suzuki Samurai seats fit well, but haven't been to the yards yet to hunt for one. Let us know what you find. :thumb:

I'm using Recaro seats out of an older ford mustang. They fit really well too.

I have a set of tan leather 4Runner seats, year is approx. 1998 but were redone in 2004. LMK if you are interested, they are in good shape and are very comfortable. I only took them out of my 4Runner as I needed 4 point seats. If you want I can send you a few pic and they will be inexpensive.

If they are stock seats, you could always strip them down, get new foam, and recover them with aftermarket replicas. Probably be a few more $$$ than junkyard seats tho.

Here's a bench on CL: http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/2295096137.html

I'm thinking of going 3 wide for the rear bench seat and mounting it above the wheel wells (need room for the dog). Anybody else gone this route?

Alright, glad to see you didn't leave me hanging for too long ;)

Couple questions that I had for the more experienced fellers in the club:
-Is that a Belleview winch on the front? It doesn't power out, only power in.
-If so, are they typically cable controlled? Or are wired versions available?
-Does anybody recognize that tub color as a stock color?

hard to tell on my little laptop, but it does look like a belleview. if it has a belt type brake on the side and not a toothed one, it is belleview and they are cable controlled. many people have adapted bike cables. as for the body color, i don't think so, but again, hard to tell on my screen

That's a GREAT deal on the Bestop seat...Someone should jump on it.

As for over the wheel well option for the rear seat...The problem you run into is the roll bar and roll bar options and of course the height as which heads will sit. Roomy is not a way to describe the rear of a 40 :hill:

Nick, you've probably already seen this, but...

That 5687 is what I've got on the front of my FJ. IT seems to run strong, but I haven't tested it under load. I need to source the push/pull cables for the clutch and brake. The ones I've got are rusted and the sheathing is shot.

I sent an e-mail to 4-Wheel Drive Center of Minnesota, which according to Mud now owns the rights to see if they can get me something. Otherwise, I'll see what I can find from McMaster or similar.
