Tomorrow is the official start of CM11. We had some breakdowns on Kane Creek. Romer busted his driver Birf. RockRunner did something to his new rear diamond axles.

I really appreciated the kindness of the group in helping get me off the trail. Mike had the great idea to remove the drive flange, but the birf had broken and put so much pressure on it that they chiseled it off and it took about an hour and half. I then limped off the trail where I troe it down and found the bell and broken inside and the shaft and bell had seperated. The shaft breakage could have been from driving it off the trail.

Lucky for me I was camped next to cdan so had all the parts I needed to get it back together. My friends from the Arizona club came up and kind of pushed me aside and put it back together. It's nice to have friends.

Worked great on Thursday on tip toe behind the rocks, great run with Hugh from Safari leading. I started to develop a bug Thursday morning that got worse by evening. I crashed at 9PM on vendor night and slept till 11 the next morning feeling even worse.

After loading up on dayquil, I decided it wasnt helping so I packed up and came home, where I have been on the couch since Friday 7PM. I was much worse Saturday and I know I made the right call to come home when I did.

It was a great time while I was out there, but sorry I missed the Dinner, hanging out with many good friends and leading Fins on Saturday. I hope you were able to find someone to lead that.

That was a good time. I pushed it pretty hard again. 9 trails in 4 days. Thanks goodness I didn't flip the JadeRunner on several occasions. My calf is sore on my right leg from accelerator action. The rear diff that was missing 3 teeth grenaded on Kane Creek. We pulled the driveshaft and the floater axles. He drove it out in front wheel drive mode with a little help from Ray's 40 on a few of the tougher spots. Fortunately he had his new diff back at camp and we swapped it out that evening.

He sheared off all of the studs and pins between the wheel hub and locking hub on Behind the Rocks. We were able to drill/EZ out the broken stud ends and replace them. The pins are hardened steel so we couldn't do anything with them. He drove the rest of the week on this setup with no additional breakage.

It's my understanding he had several experienced people who looked at it who said they thought it was safe to run. Maybe they were just chipped versus totally broken off.

Not wanting to start an argument, but if the teeth was even chipped something caused it to happen. Lost preload on the pinion or carrier? Deflection? Cap bolts bent? Any number of reasons, but it does not just happen on it's own. That means the diff was compromised. Yes, stick it in to get off the trail or get out, but to leave it like that before the event and then be signed up for hardcore trails does not make sense.

We go to great lengths to do tech inspections to make sure you do not end up with trucks that break on the trail and leave people stranded and cause inconvenience for other people. OK if you want to run like that on your own time and your own trails, but not when you are signed up for trails and leading them.

Sorry Tom, you might have gone by others advice, but I still think it was a bad call.

If you click on the link under the pics I posted earlier there is as close to frame by frame of the roll as I could get. At the end of the album are some pics of the damage he sustained.

Recovery was fairly easy. He was at enough of a side angle that we just pushed it back over. After a once over on the damage and some pushing and pulling on the front clip he gave the starter a couple bumps to make sure it wasn't hydrolocked then fired it right up. Not one single puff of smoke. He then drove it up the bypass and to the top of the hill where he changed out the right rear tire (wheel bent?) and gave it a through inspection. He finished the trail (as far as we went) and other than some minor rubbing of the fan on the shroud when the body flexed he had no problems.

It's called "coming in HOT!"

Yes indeed! And that's precisely what happened. I was leader that day. The driver was great during and after recovery, the folks on the run were superb in executing a perfect recovery. (For example, just after this photo was taken we assigned one participant to watch and keep the area below the vehicle clear of all people in case it rolled) Discussions were had and will happen again with that driver to make sure that does not happen in the future.

Incidentally, after this recovery we used dead branches to erase all off-trail tire tracks and footprints and smoothed out the sand (no crypto, just sand) so that you could barely tell anything had occurred. Again, the driver and folks on the trail all worked as a team and it was great to watch. Better if it had never happened though!

No worries, for what it is worth it was before CM started. I was planning on putting the new diff in Wednesday night but as luck has it it broke that day. I was to replace it on Monday but then the Whiskey came out so Tuesday but then well.............

The hub breaking was bad luck and or ??? I think the nuts came loose judging by the way they moved in the wheel hub.

I He finished the trail (as far as we went) and other than some minor rubbing of the fan on the shroud when the body flexed he had no problems.

Jon also drove it home to Albuquerque without incident.

Looks like between HDC folks all of the body panels are accounted for, save the windshield frame. He needs and early style windshield frame, if anyone has one. Rumors of a '71 at the YodaYard, but that's as much as I know there.

I offered to go check it out or pick it up for Jon (since I drive down to ABQ regularly as it is), but no word on whether it's real, or what kind of shape its in.

I kinda wish I'd gone to help with the recovery to learn something about recovery, but the dog and I did catch a nice nap in the truck while we were waiting on everyone. So, indeed :p:

Cool videos. Cant tell which is which with all 3 being built and white.
I had some problems with Potato Salad Hill at first and took a slightly different line and walked right up.....then noticed we were in high range. Going so slow, I never noticed. I'm losing my mind when I cant tell low range from high range :(

Perry, you truly do a great job at taking photographs that most accurately define the terrain in relation to the cruisers.

I have a ton of pics of 'cruisers on rocks'...you give of pics of "cruisers navigating technical terrain" with that "OH $h!t that's steep" factor.

I have to agree. Thanks Perry for taking the time to frame up good pictures. I wish I would spend more time doing it too.

Aww shucks, thanks guys! I just enjoy taking pictures of my friends and the great country we are lucky enough to explore:cool:.

Corbet, Hope that CM11 poster is treating you well. I'm sure you figured it out, but there are two screw holes (with screws) on the back to hang the poster.

Thanks Perry. I honestly have not got around to trying to hang it yet but found the taped slots on the back and figured as much. Cool think is I won your poster last year too. So now I sort of have a "Perry gallery":thumb:

Hi Mike Boyle and Black Gold (Jeremy Green)

Would you mind if I used a few of your pics for a recovery presentation?

Mike, I would like to use your shots of the rolled 40 and Jeremy, I would like to use your shots of the 80 series up the bank.

Chris - I have some of the 80 on the bank (I was trail leader) and my preference would be to get permission of that driver. I can PM you the contact.
