Probably timing belt, although it looks like there is coolant in the oil. Won't start, not really motivated to swap another engine into it.
It is a 22re 5mt

If there is coolant in the oil, it sounds like a head gasket. Not that hard to do but a little time consuming.
talk to you soon,

Could be, but it didn't exhibit any signs of overheating. Also, trying to start it after it died, it made a loud metal on metal clunk, like something was touching to keep the engine from cranking. however now, it will crank, but not start. I just want to get rid of it, can't afford to play with it any longer.

I have the head rests for the back seat, and the carpets under the floor mats are not torn or stained.

It is a timing chain, not belt. Coolant in the oil would indicate the chain wore through the timing cover. Might be a complete overhaul due to metal fragments going throughout. On the other hand... just an overhaul away from a fresh '88!
