I was purusing the email I got from Marlin Crawler and saw these...I'm curious what the pros/cons would be to eliminating the backing plate on the front axle of a FZJ80? Aside from the rock issue as mentioned that is...

Yup, rocks can get caught in there and certainly they are PITA 'cause of that.

They do keep small debris from pebbling the brakes, they keep water from splashing on the hot rotors (warpage) and I'd think you'd want the air scoop parts coming down Crow Hill or I-70 from Genesee.

I did that on my 4Runner and have not had a problem. I did get stuff stuck in between the shields and my rotors before, mostly rocks and some little branches. I haven't had that problem since but I also don't drive in the mud anymore, that is were I had the most problems.

Like your leaking birf grease getting on the rotors. But none of our knuckles are leaking right...:o

I just trimmed out stock backing plates for my rears (which are 79-85 front rotors and calipers). No issues at all. But in the front I would think the air ducting would help on the road as mentioned.

It is my understanding that these came about to address an issue with brake plumbing that appeared with the 60 series. Basically on the 60 series fronts there is a junction block riveted to the backing plates; one end of the block has a soft brake line and the other end has a hard brake line that goes into the caliper. The net effect of this set up is that it is challenging to remove the backing plate without disconnecting the brake line when doing a front axle service. In actuality the whole assembly can be slid out if you are carefull and take your time - but most would just disconnect the brake lines. A small hassel as the brakes then needed to be bled - but enough of an issue that solutions needed to be invented.

To address this issue; some put in a longer soft line and go directly to the caliper (bypassing the junction block and hard line), others drilled out the rivets and used bolt/nut on the junction block (to make it easily removable) and still others use the backing plate eliminator (hybrid of the first approach).

That was my thought when I saw these...Glad to know that I'm not missing some big "ah ha" here :)

well it looks like it fix's a leaky lower king pin. :lmao:

I wouldnt do it to a daily driver. stricklly because of the cooling effects that the backing plate provides to the rotor. and if you really did want to do it.. just take your current plates off and cut them off around the flat bolt flange. thats all it is. save the money.

first pic, is the trail gear kit
Then the second pic is what your OEM plate that you pulled off.
then the third is what you cut off with a cut off wheel or saw. (the last pic looks a little diffrent because its the back side of the plate not the front)
then bam ! done, reassemble as you took apart, free elminator

One thing is the Eliminator kit is stronger than the original plate that keeps leaks down.
