Sigh....walked out this morning to see my 2010 Jetta TDI GONE...the Sherriff and I followed the footprints halfway around the neighborhood...the scumbags were looking for specific cars, and my Jetta fit the bill. We estimate it happened before 10 last night, and he said the car was likely halfway to Mexico already. Sigh. Now I get to deal with insurance, and I had kept it in such great shape and very low miles (under 9k) that I will likely get screwed on the payout.

Good news is Amber and I got engaged over the weekend. :)

And Uncle Ben, this is a completely different house and neighborhood from where your tow dolly was stolen! (FYI, will be buying you a replacement tow dolly....like I should have done when it was stolen in the first place...)

Anyway.....things can always get replaced, and my family is all ok, which is all that matters.

Wow...sorry to hear the bad news Timm... {edit} on the stolen car, not the engagement :) - congrats on that!!

It is one thing to have to deal with a break in but the whole car? Bastids...

I always thought newer cars had ignition lockout security and what not so you couldn't just hop in and steal them? Or did they drag it up onto a trailer?

Not sure how they did it...footprints led up to my truck...they looked in the back, then walked around to the car....then tireprints led out of the neighborhood...

From what I hear there is a way to steal just about any car now...

Read about KeeLoq sometime. It was cracked a few years ago, so basically anyone intelligent enough to run a cell phone (or hack network security) can figure out your car's remote code and the engine immobilizer. This is also true for code hopping garage door openers, BTW.

nope no lojac or onstar or anything....but the next car will have it.....or actually I am probably done with new cars for awhile.....

day-um. that's sucks. whenever I get anything stolen it's that violated feeling or that some 'bad-guy' was that close to the house, etc.

since you at least have your tech license - you can set up an inexpensive APRS to act as a lo budget lo-jac.

keep in mind, though.... there will be GPS pod on the car and an extra antenna. not so stealthy.

odds are they got the door open somehow, chose your method.. and shift locked it into nutral and pushed it out of the driveway and down the street so it wasnt in front of your house.. then towed it onto a flat bed car hawler..

noone EVER looks at a car on a flatbed ! you just assume its going to the shop..

bummer on the car, congrats on the engagement

Timm:

That just sucks. I sincerely hope the cops find your VW and return it to you in perfect shape. If they arrest the thieves, even better.

Better news note: Congratulations on the engagement.

Wow...Westminster Police left a voice mail at 1am this morning...they recovered the Jetta! they towed it last night at 830 to an impound lot in Arvada. Hope to find out more details tomorrow and will see what kind of condition it is in. very shocked!!

timmbuck2
01-23-2012, 01:52 PM
wow....guess I am "lucky"....got the car back, completely unharmed...with everything there, including the $500 Slee doulbe cardon drive shaft I bought used a few weeks ago still in the trunk! The Westminister cops found it at 74th and Irving, have not talked to them yet for details, but it had a temp tag on it, probably from a different car, and my plates were in the trunk....with a *bunch* of his crap...tools, work bag with safety harness and helmet, clothes, etc...a couple of GPS units and several pair of sunglasses and a radar detector, probably all stolen also. Calling ADT right now to get the home security setup, and then heading to the gub shop......

Did they catch the thief?

timmbuck2
01-23-2012, 02:45 PM
have not spoken to the officer yet, hopefully tonight, but it sounds like for some reason they ran the VIN on this car that was parked on a residential street in Westminister, and it came up stolen. He had taken my plates off and put them in the trunk, and had a temp tag on it that I am sure was stolen also. Just went through his junk, and he had 2 GPS units, a radar detector, 6 or 7 pairs of sunglasses, clothes, etc etc...and of course a porn DVD and tons of CD's of very different genres...

timmbuck2
01-23-2012, 06:26 PM
no idea at all...door lock is ok, ignition is not punched...did a little online research and it does seem like there are ways...I will be parking in the garage all the time now...

still playing voice mail tag with Jeffco Sherriff and Westminister Police, but heard that they have made an arrest. :)

RockRunner
01-24-2012, 03:43 PM
Did they let you take the car without taking the stuff out of the trunk? Would think they would want to hold onto that for other cases. Sure looks like a career criminal, temp tags and a trunk full of stuff. Most likely headed for a pawn shop or Craigs list.

Glad to hear it came back in one piece. Wonder if you can "fix" the way they start the car without your keys?

So...kind of embarrassing...but I think the Westminister detective and I figured out what happened.....this scumbag was walking my neighborhood mainly looking to break into cars and steal stuff...has a history of this. When he got to my house, his footprints led to my 80 and he looked in it, but nothing of "value" was there (my ham and cb I guess were not enough) then he went to the Jetta....which apparently was unlocked. There was no physical evidence of any kind that he broke into the car, so unless he had some kind of electronic means, then the car was unlocked. I very rarely leave it unlocked...Amber used to give me a hard time for locking it in the driveway, but it was habit, and if the lights were on Auto, the lights stayed on until you locked the doors. No idea how or why they were unlocked, but that is the most logical explanation. Not the smartest thing I have ever done, but not unusual, and very common in our neighborhood. Now the really dumb thing I did, is I left the valet key in the car...I think in the storage area between the seats. Dumb dumb dumb...I put it there when I picked the car up new last year and honestly I don't remember ever looking in the storage area ever again...it is tiny and I never use it anyway. The scumbag had my valet key on him when arrested (along with some other keys) so it looks like that is what he was using. I guess I am lucky he did not break into and damage the car to steal my kids' dual DVD player and I am very lucky to get it back undamaged. Let my stupidity be a lesson to you all! (And I am getting kinda tired of teaching you all stuff through my stupidity....it is someone else's turn!!!!)

Thanks all, and hopefully my embarrassing tale will help someone else out and prevent a car theft.

When I lived in Golden in college I left my keys in the ignition in my FJ40 overnight once. Summertime, top and doors off. Lucky it was still there in the morning :o

Thanks for all the lesson's  Trust me I can and have thought a lot of people lessons in life. Biggest problem is that I don't learn from my own lessons :( You got the car back, nothing happened to it and they caught the guy, pretty good ending to a bad beginning.

Lock your car, no keys in the nooks and cranny's and if they steal they will have to do it the old fashioned way.......They have to earn it (read in the voice from the guy of Law and order ;) )

I thought that was what a valet key did, open the doors and start the engine. Just won't open the trunk or glove box.

what good is a valet key to the valet guy if it doesn't start the car?

question is why does Volkswagen have valet keys. I don't think jettas are normally rolling up to places that have valets.:hill: Some valet keys even limit output so you can't joy ride with a valet key. That seems kinda standard with all vw keys compared to real luzury vehicles :)

That was the old valet key! Modern vehicles all have transponder keys which will open everything but the "courtesy keys" only open the doors.

Sorry John, I did not partake....it was not exactly my genre....

Not sure, but I tested the key that he was using, and it opened the doors and started the car...I am pretty sure the VW guy who walked through everything for me said it would open everything but the trunk and glove box...

I gave all the stolen stuff to the police so someone had to log it into inventory. :)

so the dirtbag plead to a lesser charge of "theft of a person" and got off with 2 years probation and less then $2k in fines. There was easily $3k or more in stolen goods in my car when they found it so I doubt the fine will keep him from going right back to his dirtbag ways. sigh.

oh, and please be on the lookout for anyone selling stoledn fj40 and 55 parts, especially oem steel rims. my storage garages in north denver were broken into recently (no idea when, Tim P. saw it on Sunday). I am out of town but Friday I should be able to go see what is left, doubtful anything of any value is there. On the large garage, they tried drilling out the lock on the man door, but I had a very good lock there....so they just backed a truck through the garage door. Not a ton of stuff was in that garage...some small tools, a table saw, a 40 hard top, random trannys/tcases, and boxes of junk. The small garage I had installed a very stout lock system..so they tore the door off the hinges, then kicked the plywood off the old windows from inside. Pretty amazing that nobody in the neighboorhood heard ANY of this. This garage had a ton of smaller parts...rims, tires, boxes of small parts, gas tanks, seats, driveshafts etc etc etc. No doubt most of the stuff went to scrap metal, but possible some stuff could end up on CL, although I have not been to the garage in a couple of months, so no idea when it happened. This must be all payback for that army man toy I stole when I was 8...
