So Shawn Cardinal and Daniel Linn have been talking the desert talk since getting back from Outlaws 2011 (http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?t=16507). I'd show them areas during a few Happy Hour get together's, and a date was set. We headed out last Wed. Camped at the old town of Sego before spending the rest of the weekend in the Swell. Other than a bent rim and a majorly crappy drive home sunday due to ski traffic, we had no issues.

Enough with words, on to the pics:

After a long drive west, and a stop in Gleenwood Springs for lunch, we ended up at the old town of Sego for camp. This was the old general store for the town.

After a hearty burger at Ray's, and another stop to stock up on wood, we headed to the Swell. Here, we turned North at the intersection for Highway 24.

This was my first time to the Swell and after learning more and more about the Outlaws, this was a great excuse to learn about the area. The amount of knowledge Kurt and Perry brought to the adventure were tremendous. Each camp was worthy of making basecamp and exploring the immediate surroundings for days. :thumb:

I hope you enjoy these pics. and if I can figure out how to post videos you'll see some "Gamiviti-Cam" footage.

Here's us airing down and getting ready for several days on dirt.

CardinalFJ60

it's a knockoff of the mr. buddy heater. on low it kicked out too much het that close to the headliner. I'd kick it on the morning and move it often. in 5min it was nice

I was elected to go across the river and (ideally) get on top and break the ice shelf at the far bank. First try I got on top, (which is when this pic was taken) but I could not get the back wheels up. Something about not having lockers, I can't remember. :blah:

Anyway, I backed off, gave it a second try, and ended up bending a rim and losing tire inflation. Turns out the ice shelf was ~6" thick and there was NO way I would be able to break it off.

Anyway, Kurt got to use his cool exhaust jack and we found another way around, but I think those pics are still coming.

The water levels are much higher than when we visited in November.

More cool shots Perry. I like the abstract aspect of this one.

Thanks for sharing guys, I've been wanting to go down there ever since I saw pics on a "government conspiracy" site while researching the restricted airspace. Good to see that the gates are still unlocked.

There is a surprising amount of things to see at the old base, there are actually far more buildings on the north side of I70 close to town, pretty wild stuff with some modern signs about radioactivity in fields by the base. Really makes you wonder what they were testing and launching down there.
