So my 60 is popping out of 4 low (stays in 2 low, but front wheels disengage with the most annoying grinding sound) at the most inopportune times...usually on a steep climb or obstacle when I really need it. After several tries to re-engage it, I can usually get it to work until it then happens again on the next obstacle. Additionally, I noticed that it shifts itself from 4 high to 2 high when baja-ing it down a dirt road. I recently installed a 5 speed, which included opening up the TC to re-assemble it, but I did not replace anything but gaskets inside. It was doing this before the 5 speed conversion too.

What do you think, guys? Hopefully just a weak detent spring? If not that, what may cause this?

If the detent spring isn't the culprit, maybe check the motor mounts. this is common over on Mud and that is often the issue.

Mine has done the exact same thing twice now. Once on the spooky night run, and also when we were at our mountain property, at least 12 miles from civilization (that was scary!).

With Marco's help (his 60 used to do the same thing) we determined that it was my wife's knee bumping into the lever. Apparently it is very sensitive to being bumped, much more so than any of my 40s. The frustrating thing was that my 4WD light remained illuminated even though it was only in 2WD.

Don't have to worry about Nattybumpo's wife (ex) doing the bumping. That hasn't happened in quite awhile, or at least that's what I hear. :lmao:

Maybe I have a ghost!

Also, the opening in the floor can hit the lever.

another thing to check is that the boot isn't pulling on it either.

I always thought each vehicle came equipped from the factory with a bungy cord wrapped around the shift lever and over to the seat base :D

I widened the hole in the floor on the Mule to make sure it wasn't that or the boot, I even installed the HD detent spring/ball kit and an after market twin shifter. Ultimately the bungy cord was the only solution that worked.

On the Meanie, it has an AA twin stick Tcase and it has never popped out of gear even without a bungy.
