It was a short CM12 for me: An uneventful tow over on Wednesday, a great run on Spike with Jeremy yesterday, but I discovered a broken leaf spring in the parking lot last night. They are custom Alcans, and they can't have me a leaf till next week. I find myself back home tonight.

This has been my second Cruise Moab and it just seems to keep getting better. Went on Golden Spike thursday and it was a blast, took yesterday off but the dinner and raffle was awesome (great to see sooo many 'yotas in the parking lot) and we're off to finish the event on Fins. It's been really great and I've really enjoyed connecting with people from the previous year.

Kudos to everyone involved!

This has been the worst documented CM ever. Did you guys know they have this new thing called the internet, where you can put stuff, and other people can see it!!! It's amazing, I tell ya'. :D

I didn't take many pics on my one day running, but I have a couple worthwhile...

Sadly, work got in the way and they couldn't/wouldn't give me an answer on schedule until Thursday of last week, the architect and contractor revised their schedule and bumped my install from May 14th . . . all the way back to June 20th. I'll just crank up the AC in the shop and make hay, er sawdust I mean, while the sun shines. Oh well, will just have to do an extra trip this fall.

I love the cliff posing shots, but after a night in Arch Canyon, I won't be doing that anymore. First time in 4 years of Moab events that I heard falling rocks. Not once, but multiples on different sides of the canyon. I always thought those fell during the freeze thaw cycle in winter or during rain storms, but apparently they can go just about any time! It made all of us question our tent locations that evening....

Corbet
05-07-2012, 09:10 AM
Could there have been people camped at the top? I know there are access points to the rim of Arch Canyon. But I understand. I've never seen anything come down in the Moab area. But have watched VW Bus sized boulders fall 1000's of feet in the Wasatch on two occasions in the backcountry.

These pics are all from Elephant Hill on Saturday. Nice and small group. Was 5 trucks until mine clipped a wire for the radiator fan a few hundred feet up the trail, so I ran it back down to the parking lot and left it there and led the trail from the back seat of my Dad's 60. It was a blast. I got a lot more pictures on E-Hill than the other days when I was busy driving. ;)

Ok I'm back. Now that I've had a break and the Moab hangover is gone. I had a great time. Lots of work of course.

On Wed. I took a new comer to Moab in a well built FJC (Shannon) up Moab Rim. It was is his first run and he did well with me spotting him. Permanent smile from he and his wife. We found the 1/4 mile long Indian Art near the rim via a hike near the other spur road that Neil had been telling me about. That was cool.

Thursday I gunned for Dave K. on Elephant Hill. I hadn’t run that before so that was scenic. I had a bunch of good conversations with a guy that later told me his name was Eric Vogt (former TLCA EVP and old school Moab participant). That was interesting.

Friday I led Hells Revenge. I was a bit sluggish thanks to a good time the previous night with Randy’s whiskey and fire. It was a quick and uneventful run without being able to run Hells gate, the hot tubs and escalator. We got to watch Gary W. and his group run Escalator. Gary put his LC on his side trying to get up and Montana Joe had to winch to get up since he got twisted.

Sat. I led the Golden Spike. I had 7 rigs from the Gotham City Cruisers on the run plus other experienced guys. They were a lot of fun and everyone but one person had HAM radios. They even had an extra handheld for the 1 person without so so he could listen in. So it was great being able to leave the CB alone. I followed the new well marked paint through a difficult spot up a narrow canyon to the top of slickrock and quickly realized that wasn’t the correct route. Many got body damage getting through. There was no turning around and going back down would have a bad option. I later discovered that was the new trail system “Where Eagles Dare”. So I had the group split up. But, since we were able to communicate with the Hams we were all able to find a way back together and re-group. But, it set us back a hour or so. Either way that was my fault. I should have pre-run it again this year. We all had a blast on the rest of the trail and we were out about 6:30pm. A long day of course.

It was impressive to see so many people make it out from all over North America. Many of these people had been wanting to make it to the event for years and were finally able to get their rig ready, schedule the time, complete all the necessary planning and make the trip a reality.

It was also impressive to see all the support and enthusiasm from many of the Toyota vendors in the business showing up and wanting to be part of the event and with a desire to more a part of the event in the future.

It’s quite an event we have built up over the years and I was proud to part of it.

I wasn't in picture taking mode. But, here are a few from Moab Rim, Elephant Hill and the face on the Spike.

Blue notch, and it is indeed open camping, ranger knew we were there, dues paid, all kosher. But since the question has been posted, and I can't offer an explanation for wherever the photo may wander on the open internet, I feel it is best to yoink it.

What'd I miss?

We were totally legit down there. As long as you are below the historical high water line you can camp wherever. There aren't even any developed camp sites in that area and it is marked as a camp ground on the map.

We were camped we were waaaay below historical high water mark.

so what picture was it? you've got me curious...

Agreed. We followed all rules whether we liked them or not.

I was just curious where it was. I am heading to Moab tomorrow morning. I would love to camp in that area sometime. I just had no clue where that pic was taken is all.

I wasn't implying anything either. I dig the site you guys had and want to use it.

How cold was the water? Worth swimming or too cold?

It was cold, but very comfortable for swimming. Nice rocks to jump off.

If you search for "Blue Notch Canyon" with Google, you'll find some information on it. The road is about 12 miles south of Hite, UT, and is about a 15 mile dirt road to the water's edge.

The water was chilly but very nice once you were in it for a while, it is probably super good now. I bet even warm.

Tons of Stripers too, big schools of them near the cliffs.

One thing to note is the water will be higher, so everything will look different. Part of the fun is the fat that it changes all the time down there due to the water level rising and dropping.

Call for photos: I have written an article for Toyota Trails. If anyone reading this has photos that haven't been shared in the general public, please let me know. Preferably of Chicken Corner Thursday, Fins Friday and Wipeout Saturday.

I thought Trails dropped the "general public" rule for photos? If so, mine are hosted on photobucket and/or I can email the source files.

No, that rule is still very much in force. If they are made public first on the web then they will not be included in Toyota Trails. What changed was that the photographer retains the rights to the photos, whereas before they became the property of TLCA.

The rationale is that Toyota Trails is an exclusive TLCA member benefit, and all content is exclusive.

Just curious if anyone has read my article in the S/O issue of Toyota Trails yet? It was relegated to the online, members-only section. The bad news is that it isn't printed on dead trees with all the rest of the magazine. The good news is more photos can be included without the print limitations.

Been a TLCA member for a few years now and have never logged into the Online section. You just gave me a great reason to! I'll check it out tonight.

Wow Jeff, awesome embodiment of Cruiser Karma. Thanks for all the pics and shout outs. It was great to spend the day with you on Fins.

In another Cruiser Karma episode, and since you talk about it in the article, the other weekend camping with Scott Yoder we met the guy whose FJ40 had rolled backwards and got to meet the Border Collie who had accidentally knocked the T-case into neutral leading to the brief but critical moment of roll back. Nice people.

You got some photo credits. I apologize, I spelled your name with two "r"s; I'll get it right next time...;)
