This annual run has become a club favorite. Traveling the mountain passes by 4x4 is a wonderful way to experience the magnificent mountains surrounding Ouray (http://www.ouraycolorado.com/). Ouray has been eloquently nicknamed the "Switzerland of America." The immediate vicinity offers limitless opportunities for four-wheeling, from easy scenic drives to rugged challenges, along trails miners built to passes that climb to spectacular heights. The trails traverse some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, abundant with wildflowers, ghost towns, abandoned mines, animal life (good chance of seeing moose), all with breathtaking vistas.

Check out area camping info here (http://www.ouraycolorado.com/Campgrounds+&+RV+Parks) or camp at the 4J Campground (http://www.ouraycolorado.com/listing/rv4j) within walking distance of a relaxing soak in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool (http://www.ouraycolorado.com/Hot+Springs+Pool). You can also stay at the Amphitheater forest service campground (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Amphitheater_Co/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70572&topTabIndex=CampingSpot)above town or the KOA (http://www.koa.com/where/co/06158/) about 10 minutes North of town.

San Juan Roads and Ghost Town Map attached to this post at the bottom. Check the links to the various trails to "TrailDamage.com (http://www.traildamage.com)" for more info.

(Cancelled Due to Lack of Interest) Friday-Saturday – Limited to 10 rigs (Trailers Ok) - Overnight Run – Day 1) Mineral Creek thru Animas Fork over Cinnamon Pass (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=298) to Wager Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=299) through the Carson site to the overnight camp near the upper end of the Rio Grande Reservoir. (Been told there is some GREAT fly-fishing here). Day 2) Beartown site with lunch at Kite Lake (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=266) then return to Silverton via Stony Pass. Return to Ouray in time for Saturday's Pot Luck Dinner.

Saturday - Governor Basin (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=82)/Yankee Boy (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=81) - Nestled at an elevation between 11500 and 12000 feet, Yankee Boy Basin contains some of the most prolific stands of wildflowers in the state. The basin itself is surrounded by several breathtaking peaks—Mt Sneffels, Potosi Peak, Teakettle Mountain, Cirque Mountain, Stony Mountain, and Gilpin Mountain. Most are 13,500 or higher. The Governor Basin trail splits off from the Yankee Boy and climbs up to the edge of Humboldt Basin, and on to the Humboldt, Virginius, and Mountain Top mines. You drive to the Mountain Top Mine, but the remains of the Humboldt Mine cannot be reached by 4x4, but the old trail can be hiked.

Saturday 6PM - Pot Luck; At the 4J's group picnic area. Bring your own main dish and a side dish or dessert to share.

Sunday - Option 1) Black Bear Pass (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=79) to Telluride -, lunch in the city park. You can take a brief walk along Main Street, stop for ice cream or your favorite fru-fru coffee. Imogene Pass (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=80://) for the return trip to Ouray.

Sunday - Option 2) Poughkeepsie Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=77)/Corkscrew Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=83) . Poughkeepsie Gulch is a moderate trail, but some spots may be difficult for mostly stock vehicles. Corkscrew Gulch trail climbs via numerous switchbacks, the last few of which are steep and narrow. At the summit (at 12,217 ft) is the red soil of the famous Red Mountains 1, 2 & 3 visible to the south..

All runs meet at 8:00AM in the parking lot by the Ouray Hot Springs . Depart 8:30 AM !

Post up you're trail run preferences if you’re planning to attend.

I think the Goodheart crew will be up for this trip. Need to make sure dates are good, but I think we'll be in for the overnight as well. Black Bear on Sunday looks really cool.

EDIT: We're in. Overnight and BB please!

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery on taking a double cab taco on Black Bear? 120" wheel base looks to add some more fun to that run. Thanks for any advice.

It is a special trail in CO. She would be disapointed if she didn't do it. Just take the decent slow and you will be fine. 10 point turns if you need to.....just don't get in front of me I tend to drive in the mirror of the truck in front of me :D.

If there is still space we would like to reserve a spot for the trip. :) I've traveled the area before and would be most interested in the less intensive trails as this is all new to my fiancÚ. Love Black Bear and Imogene pass. We would most likely stay at the campground close to the springs. Please let me know what is needed to get us locked in with the trip.

Just tossing this out there. If anyone can't make it to these dates but really would like to visit Ouray with a group, I'd like to invite you to our Ouray run which is scheduled for Aug 10-12. Keep an eye on the clubhouse for more details (http://forum.ih8mud.com/co-book-cliff-cruisers/). Have a great time on your run! The awesomeness of the San Juan's never gets old.

I ran it last weekend with mine. I don't think it took more than two backups on any of the switchbacks.

So, instead of Black Bear I might do Poughkeepsie again this year.

I have done em' both...Poughkeepsie is harder IMO. Black Bear is just tight turns, i don't ever lock up cause it just hurts your turn radius. Did Poughkeepsie in a stock 3rd gen a couple years ago and the high dollar jeepers couldn't believe it!

I am a maybe on the Ouray trip, can't beat the area...its awesome to take the family and wife/girlfriend. Is there a deadline or a due date to sign up?

Does Black Bear Pass get its high trail rating due to the pucker factor or are there actual obstacles that are an issue for stock rigs?

How about Imogene? Same thing?

Stock vehicles are no problem on anything in the San Juans with the exception of Poughkeepsie. During the FJ Summit I saw a stock FJC, LR3, Grand Cherokee and 4th gen 4runner go down. I had my 100 series down bone stock. It is all about pucker factor and the consequences (which are very real) if you screw something up. I would not feel safe driving my manual 3 speed drum brake CJ5 down it but am perfectly comfortable in a modern or well maintained older vehicle.

Unfortunately, we're going to nix the :camping:Overnite Run this year due to lack of participants. We'll be hangin' out at the 4J though.

We'd still like to get out and camp somewhere out of town on Friday night. Anyone else want to explore and camp?

EDIT: I think we'll just revise our schedule to camp near Taylor Park Res. on Thursday night, near Lake City (or in Ouray) on Friday night, and then meet everyone for the Saturday run.
