View Full Version : Question about a parts rig and Title
05-15-2012, 08:41 PM
I bought a parts rig the other day. I am going to part it out until there isn't much left and scrap the body as it is trash. It runs, but it is doubtful if it will pass emissions. It has an out of state title at the moment. I would rather not go through the hassle of getting it up to par to title it in this state since I am just parting it out.
My question is, do I have to title it here? The seller just signed the old title over to me. Are there any other options I should be aware of?

If you're ultimately going to scrap it, most scrap yards will accept an out-of-state title, or almost any paperwork as the title. My local place accepted a Calif 'application for title' as a title and gave me the full scrap price. (Without a title, the local yard gives you less $$/ton and mails you the check 10 days later). I think you'll be fine with what you have. You can call the scrap yard where you will take it (in advance) to avoid surprises.

Just talked to a scrap yard and a guy who buys junk cars on craigslist. Craigslist guy will take scrap without title. Scrap yard, All Recycling, only needs proof of out of state title, and a bill of sale with them.

Just got off the phone with Colorado DMV and they said that I don't need to title it here. The bill of sale just needs to say "parts only."
