View Full Version : Long story...quick question (2F and 3FE)

Went hunting this weekend and bagged this. Now, it sits as I ponder. I've read a lot on this topic in the last month, but welcome any feedback before either attempting this install or selling it.
My 2F runs strong, no real problems with it. Sure, I'd like more power in the mountains and a few other things, but isn't the grass always greener on the other side? What are thoughts on a 3FE install into my 60? If anyone locally has this set-up, preferably with the H55, I'd love to take it for a spin.
Pros-cons--real world experience, all welcome.

You have asked the eternal question for carb guys. You should read the article published a few years back in TT about the guy in Florida (Jim xxxx?) who converted an FJ60 to an FJ62 engine. Quite a bit of work - and a bit more power. I don't know if this article is available online - the issue might be ~5 years old by now. There is some stuff on Mud, too.

Be nice to have fuel infection at altitude and off camber.
with my injection i've all but forgot about carb issues. except when I take the 40 up to argentine and i'm dumping too much fuel.

Crash has already loaned the three Toyota Trails with Jim Godwin's (a friend of mine) story of installing the 3FE into the 60 to Carlton. By the way, the articles are from 1998! (gasp) Time flies, eh? ;)
Carlton, you haven't asked to drive my 62 which might be a little instructional. My transmission isn't a typical A440F so the differences between it and your H55F won't be as pronounced. I haven't driven a 2FE but I know a couple of guys that have gone that route and they seem to like the result.

I won't chime in on whether to go FI or remain carbureted - on second thought - do the swap:wrench:. Really, what's the point in going hunting if don't eat the meat? :D
I drove SURFFJ62'S (Bryan) FJ62 with H55 at one of the Cruise Moab Wrenching sessions. It is a nice truck and he is local. Shoot him a PM to see if you can get some wheel time behind it.

Thanks for the insights. I've read the articles Steve and others mention and have exchanged emails with Jim. Haven't spoken to him on the phone, but that's in order, as well. Ricardo, I tried emailing Bryan based on the email in the roster and it bounced back--someone needs to update that roster, wait a minute that's the secretary's role--d'uh! :eek:

Yep. do that. I was "this close" to a 2FE before my rebuild, I kinda went nuts(in a good way) on the straight re-build and couldn't source the top-end for a reasonable price.
Robbie and I had GREAT discussions on this set up. :thumb:
Although I have the 2F and H55f, you are welcome to drive mine. I'd say that 2F Robbie built is....well, "special". ;-)
