The Raffle 62 is gonna get regeared so there will be two 4:11 fine splines up for sale soon! Score us a long range fuel tank and I'll pull some strings and hook you up! (I might have a back up set)

I'll be in Colorado springs next week, and have a fine spline 4.11 diff that I would be willing to bring along for $150.

What years had the fine spline? It has been a while for me... I have some ranging from '69 to possibly '78.

FJ-62's had them, '89 and up?

What years had the fine spline? It has been a while for me... I have some ranging from '69 to possibly '78.Fine spline pinions were introduced with the 1978 model year. Fine spline axles/side gears were 1968, same year as birfields were introduced. Side gears are super easy to change out, pinions not so easy. Cruiser axle/diff timeline:

Early-1967: Coarse spline axles, side gears, and pinions. Front uses ball joints instead of birfields. Ratio is 4.11:1

1968-1975: Fine spline axles and side gears, coarse spline birfields are introduced. Pinions are still coarse spline. Ratio still 4.11:1

1976-1977: Fine spline "long" birfields coincide with front disks. All else same as above.

1978: Fine spline pinions, all else same as above.

1979-1987: The fine spline birfields are shortened, now same as mini truck. Ratio changed to 3.70:1 (NOT 3.73! 10 teeth on pinion, 37 teeth on ring gear!)

1988-1997: Ratio goes back to 4.11:1, coinciding with introduction of A440F auto tranny on FJ62s, presumably due to overdrive capability. Note that while the rear stays the same on 1991-up FJ80 and FZJ80, the front of 80s now has the smaller 8" reverse cut high pinion diff. I have no idea what the 1998-up UZJ100 uses :-0

Good stuff, so I want a 1978 or 1988+ for 4.11 fine spline.

Good stuff, so I want a 1978 or 1988+ for 4.11 fine spline.Assuming you want used, yes. All aftermarket new is fine spline. Thus, if you buy aftermarket for your pre-1978 rig, or used 78-up, you must also change your companion flanges, about $30/ea. Note that there are about a half dozen different companion flange (and corresponding diff yoke) bolt patterns over the years. I know Joe Calleja sells drill-your-own fine spline companion flanges to fit whatever driveshaft yoke you are running.

Obviously, "while you're in there", you want to put in new pinion and t-case seals.

If you have a 78 I would be interested, I need one for sure but could happily take two if you have them and they are cheap.

Ian,
I was serious about the Raffle truck. The plan is to gegear which means 2 sets of fine spline 4:11's, most likely is excellant shape, will be sold. :thumb:

Yes but in all fairness those should go on eBay. Besides, I don't have a project assignment yet so if i can get parts fast enough I may have a rolling chassis next week, the Longs and Poly perfs and both lockers are here, as well as seals and bearings for both axles. :thumb:

Which reminds me, got time to look at my pinion angles this weekend? :D
