View Full Version : '78 2F Vacuum secondary question

I just rebuilt my '78 FJ40 carb (OEM) after doing it, um, 22 years ago. Note to self: don't wait that long. While none of the old parts showed any wear, really, the vehicle starts with less choke and runs smoother.

I used a Carquest carb kit that included a new vacuum secondary diaphragm. The kit did not show any gaskets to be used where the 'block' of the secondary bolts to the carb, but I used a likely-looking cardboard o-ring. After doing the paperclip test, my secondary is not opening (and I know the vacuum port to it is clear). The FSM doesn't show a gasket that I could see, but SOR does.

Can I just use a rubber o-ring for this gasket? I'd rather not use RTV, as is hard to control in such a tiny area.

Thanks - Steve

My memory is fuzzy, but I thought the diaphragm was the gasket...

There's a tiny cavity where the secondary body attaches to the carb - that's the gasket I need. (Yes, on the secondary itself, the diaphragm is the gasket).
