Camping on private property. Family fun time. Location near Rudi Res. Reachable by mag chloride road from Leadville, Eagle, and Basalt. North of Rudi Res. Scenic drive type stuff. Kids and motorcycles, and calm child friendly dogs welcome. You can get a pop up camper there but may require 4low. Primitive camping, no potable water on site. Plenty of Firewood.

Friday night- Tin foil cook-off
Sat night- Cast Iron cook-off
Sun AM- bacon, sausage and all things pork, with eggs.

I'll provide location and directions later.

Hope to see you's there. (That's Kiwi for Y'all)

Thanks for putting this together Farnham

Might be up for this.
So your saying leave the Land Cruiser at home, load the tundra, set up camp, eat, drink and fish in the res.? :thumb:

farnhamstj

The Tundra would have no problem getting there. The res is about 1/2 hour drive from the property. Sylvan lake is nice to fish, there are also some small ponds nearby. My suggestion to most people is to choose an interesting way to get to and from the land. Perhaps Mosquito pass then over Hagerman Pass. Or Shrine Pass over Ptarmigan to Worts ditch, Hagerman. Yeoman park is nearby as is Fulford. There are easy ways to get there and moderate wheeling ways. Nothing we would consider difficult, though some might. Eagle past Sylvan lake is the fastest from Vail.

Fubuki, Do both, take the Eagle-past Sylvan lake route, camp with us Friday night, then Sat head over Hagerman pass through Leadville down to Salida to meet with Homebrew Club.

Very cool, but I can't scratch the rims on the Tundo....they are 20's ya know. If there is some loosly organized wheeling I'll trailer out the 40. I was just thinking I could get a summers worth of fishin in.

Steve, Perhaps trailer to Sylvan lake state park. Park where the pavement ends. Then you could unload and explore and get to camp in the 40. I'm sure we could help get any camping gear that didn't fit in the 40 to camp. We do it this way in the winter with snowmobiles.

Hey this sounds just like what i've been looking for. I have my brother in town and would like to show him and his wife a good time with some outdoors, fishing, camping and good people. Would it be cool to join the party?

We would be coming form the springs so would most likely camp around BV friday night and head over saturday.

I have a question about access- we will need to take 2 cars, so the kids' mom can run back down the hill Saturday in time to work on Sunday. Is the camp site mini van accessible? Or will some creative parking/shuttling be in order? And if that's the case, how far would it be from the parking area to camp?

John, Yes that's the spot, and the map shows the correct route in. If we don't get rain then the minivan will have no problem. If it gets muddy, she could park on the road from Sylvan lake to Thomasville That's a mag-chloride rd and is usually pretty good. Actually it's pretty good until where the map shows jeep trail.

Best wishes on the knee surgery. Too bad you can't make it. Where are we gonna sit if it starts raining? You should try to be overly helpful for the first few days, then she'll want you out of the house so she can get a little peace and quiet over the weekend.

Anyone have a propane fireplace we could use?

Due to extreme fire danger we will not be launching Estes model rockets this year. We will however be launching WATER ROCKETS. We have one launcher that shoots 2liter bottles.

Is there any water at or near camp? wondering about swimming/playing/shower source potential.

Also what about drinking water- can we fill a jug at Sylvan Lake, or just fill at home and pull over two passes?

I'll swing past Sylvan lake and check on water availability. There is none on the property.
I'll get some more accurate time estimates. But, I think there are some fishing/swimming ponds about 20min away, Sylvan is about 45min so is Reudi Reservoir.

Corbet, sorry you can't make it. We'll eat some cobbler and bacon for you. I was hoping you were gonna recreate that doughnut burger for us all.

Directions:

Get to Sylvan lake state park. This is well signposted from the Eagle exit. Plan on 1/2 hour from I-70 to Sylvan. Road is sign posted West Brush creek rd

1 mile past Sylvan. Stay left and follow sign to Crooked Creek Pass 4mi.

At Crooked Creek pass stay straight following CR400 signposted to Thomasville.

Stay on 400 for 9 miles, you will pass mile post 27 on rt side.

Turn Right on FR519(spring creek rd on some maps). Follow this for 4 miles, it will bring you to camp.

There are a few spurs to the right, DO NOT take them.

There is a barb wire cow fence you will have to move, please close gate

You will see a sign that says locked gate ahead.

Pass through locked gate. Gate will appear locked, just lift cable and swing.

Stay to left.

you will pass a small green and brown house, continue downhill across meadow, between cut aspen trees.

You will veer left 2 times, I would call it straight or slightly left.

There is no cell phone service. I will have 146.460 on when I am near my truck.

I spoke with Sylvan lake and while the do have water, the camp host explained to me that it was for campground use only. I plan to bring about 10-15 gallons, and bottled water to drink.

The path is currently marked with small purple string tied to trees on the left side at all questionable intersections. I will add paper plates too on my way there.

It is about an hour from Sylvan lake state park. 18miles. Mag chloride for 14mi, subaru grade last 4miles. It is steep and will require 4lo if you are pulling a camper.

I wonder what the travel time difference would be coming in from the south (Fryingpan Road via Hagerman)? The location is (seemingly) a lot closer to Ruedi than it is to Sylvan Lake.

You can see that same dilapidated structure in your camp picture on Google Maps.

Matt you may be right. I've just always gone through Eagle. I certainly encourage people to find alternate routes to camp. For example, going to through Yoman Park to Crooked creek pass. OR FR414/413??

It could be bypassed by following FR705- Noname/wurtz ditch rd. (about an hour, wouldn't tow a camper)

If HWY 24 between Redcliff and Leadville was on the must do list.

Still in it. Leaving tomorrow by 3 hopefully. I'm bringing my mom/stepdad along as well. It will be there first camping trip since moving back to Colorado and I'll greatly appreciate their help with the girls since Tiff won't make it. I'll have the Adrenalin in tow with new 20lb propane and ~30 gallons of water so I'm sure we will be covered.

I know the state fire ban is lifted, what is the story for the county that we will be in? I'll bring a trasharoo full of wood if we can have a fire.
