View Full Version : can't get doors off 40

Well it's hot. And so it's time to take the doors off
the FJ40. I've soaked the door hinge pins in PB Blaster and whacked
them with a hammer. And they're not budging. Any other ideas? How
about simply removing the three bolts that hold the hinge to the door -
is that a bad idea?

Removing the three bolts will work just fine. It's not hard to readjust the doors when you put them back on.

Removing those three bolts would do it and give you some more room to knock out the pins.

That said, give another go with a drift and a BFH (eat your wheaties and don't be shy) to get the pins out. The first time I removed mine, they were very stubborn and needed significant persuasion:D.

If you have a nice paint job, be very carefull to not scratch the paint. One of the benefits of the rattle can paint job on my 40 is the scratches I put into it are easy to fix.

I used a punch like this one (http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-16-x-9-in-line-up-tool/p-00942902000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5) to knock out the hinge pins.

If u do get pins loose, fold windshield forward because upper pin can hit it before coming all the way out

Okay, thanks all for the ideas. I'll go to town on the hinges with
a punch and hammer, and if that doesn't do it I'll just remove
the 3 hinge-to-door bolts.

I had to use a rivit gun/air hammer to get mine out.

Cover the paint below the hinge with cardboard and masking tape and hit it with a BFH.

Once you remove the door VIA the three bolts, you could also use a C-Clamp to jack the pin up.. but like others have said just smacking it real good should do it. Ige's right about the windshield though, the pin will run into it, so tipping it forward adds the clearance you need.
