View Full Version : Hmmm... emissions wheels

So it occurs to me that I lost a resource when I sold the 1997 4Runner.

That is... I lost my emissions wheels for the Chili! So I either need a location of an Envirotest shop that really will test 34" as-measured tires like they are supposed to, or... does anyone have a spare pair of mounted 33s I could borrow for a few days?

What a pain Envirotest is... Oh yeah, now I get to go through diesel testing pain too about the same time as the Chili...

On the other hand... the air is cleaner. You shoulda seen LA. Nothing like what I remember as a kid... you could breathe.

Reminds me of what I saw in India a few years back...in response to numerous
traffic fatalities, the gov't instituted vehicle safety checks, which included a
requirement that tires have some tread. Soon after that, some
entrepreneur set up a tire rental shop just around the corner from the
inspection station. For a minimal fee you could leave your bald tires
there, get a set with tread, and return them a few hours later after passing inspection.

Bill,
You can use mine off my truck. I won't be doing any mall crawlin any time soon. I can probably get them off the truck on Sunday. Let me know.

The one here in Broomfield didn't even look twice when I went in. They just waved me into the RV/4x4 bay.

I had to go back twice though because no one told me about that other little piece of paper I needed for the VIN verification...

Bill,

I have a set of e-test tires sitting in the shed...285/75-16 Toyo MTs on late 80 series wheels.

Not sure if those wheels will fit...Bad news is I don't have an extra set of lugnuts and I didn't pay to have the tires balanced when I mounted them...Good news is the e-test place is only about a mile from my house so you could swap, test, and swap in less than an hour I bet.

Sweet, Mark, you are probably the closest. Let me know a time that works for you. I would need to borrow them for a few days, as I need time to swap them, then time around work hours to get to the place, then time to swap them back and get them to you. Or maybe a Saturday in July sometime would work.

It would be GREAT if Envirotest would just take us through the RV/4x4 bay. Just makes too much sense. If I inflate to 35psi (the max) I know for a fact the Chili won't behave badly on their rollers, but if it makes them nervous, the RV/4x4 bay is the perfect solution. Broomfield is a ways off though...

I called the main Envirotest number... and amazingly, the gal on the other end has excellent customer service skills. She gave me advice on when to show up, and will call the K-C center manager to arrange a good time for me to talk to him about testing options using my current wheels... who knows?

At least both she and I are addressing it rightly! ;)

Bill, pretty much any time after the 4th would work, and keeping them for a few days is no biggie. They are on steelies with something like 3.5" of backspacing, so they'll likely fit fine.

Bill, I have a set of 32's on 16 inch wheels that came off my Hilux that might work for you. They are just taking up space in my driveway. You're welcome to come try them out and keep them as long as needed. I'm up Brook Forest Rd a few miles from you.

Hmmm, that might work even better... although the Chili motor will be spinning on the rollers on 32s for sure... :lmao:

Martin, you interested in selling them? I will be needing the dang things every two years for a while. Or... maybe we could have a club wheelset? I know it's been talked about before.

It's always possible that the Envirotest manager and I can come to some sort of plan too, if so I will let you know.

Bill, I had them posted for sale awhile ago with no takers, so if you are interested and they fit, I'll make you a good deal. :thumb:

I just need a pair, so maybe someone can make good use of the other pair. What is the backspacing though? I have disks in the back...
