For those of you who can't do the Outlaw's run, and/or for anyone who has ever run E-Hill and wished you could have spent more time down there, perhaps this trip is for you. I have reserved sites 2 and 3 at Devil's Kitchen, Friday October 19 and Saturday October 20.

Leaving the Denver area in the afternoon on Thursday 10/18. Initial plan is camp part way, most likely Rabbit Valley. Idea there is to get at least half the driving out of the way, so that we can sign in at the Ranger's office, pay, and run E-hill all on Friday morning.

Friday afternoon most likely slot canyon exploring behind the camp sites, maybe a nap, possibly a hike. Several hikes leave right from camp.

Saturday morning will begin with a quick 4x4 drive over SOB hill and the official Joint Trail hike. Saturday afternoon has multiple options- explore Bobby Joe or impossible hill area, hike through Chesler Park, maybe swing around and do the confluence overlook hike, or possibly go back to camp and take a nap. Really up to you and how you'd like to spend the day down there.

Sunday is tear down & head back to Denver- it's about 9 hours total driving.

Who can go: Anyone with a moderately capable and well maintained 4x4, who gets along well with others while camping. You need to be able to run E-hill with all your camping gear. You should probably like kids.

Who really should go: Folks who really enjoy that area, and want to spend more time exploring it. Also, folks with kids... particularly in the 4-10yo range. With varying levels of parental intervention, the canyons down there are likely the coolest thing they will have ever explored.

Who can't go? dogs. not allowed in the park, sorry. Also anyone with an aversion to any of the above.

This is primitive camping, other than a pit toilet. So need to bring in water, and enough gear for 20-30°F nights. The limit is 10 people and 3 vehicles per site- again I have reserved #2 & #3, site #4 is already booked by another group, and site #1 as of today is open. If anyone wants to book it, you can download the back country permit here: http://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/backcountrypermits.htm

I'll be in Moab (staying at MSR) Friday through Sunday for The Other Half Marathon. If you guys are in or near Moab Proper maybe we can meet up.

E-Hill is fun to run all alone at night too . . . . seriously, we started our Maze run from there last November and I was the last one back to Devil's Kitchen about 10:00 or so. I've run E-Hill a couple of times before but it just felt totally different at night. It was one of the few times I wished that I had a bunch of lights on my roof rack. Of course, the ranger may not agree with me.

nakman
07-09-2012, 09:52 PM
Agreed! I think we were only about 20 minutes ahead of you guys... but it was more like midnight, not 10:00 iirc. Anyway yes the E-Hill night run is an option for anyone, but first choice for me is to run it in the morning on Friday. Will be a little easier on the passengers, plus I want to stop in the office to make sure we're 100% legit, etc.

Right on Bruce, and yeah that's he idea. Will be Michele's first trip down there, never could swing the full day during CM, and will be much better to explore at a more relaxed pace.

We're in. I've been trying to make time to do all of this while in the Moab area for years and never have had time to make it work.

Yes still space- but if you're interested Dave to the point where you're willing to invest $30, I'd say go ahead and book site #2, that way we're covered for a larger group. It wouldn't be a bad thing if we were spread out a little either.. as 2 groups per site would still feel like you're alone in the middle of nowhere.

Don't you just hate when those trips on the horizon keep you from thinking straight ? I've got a couple of those coming up but unfortunately this isn't one of them.

I'm going to try and convince a bunch of the "Pre-FJ Summit in Moab" crew next summer to make a run over E-Hill and back into the Needles.

Sounds great, Chris. I think we are close to capacity then.. in fact we may be pushing it a little.. site #1 may need to be a factor here, I'll reach out to Nay and see what's up.

Site 1:
Nay + 4
Available space for 1 maybe 2 vehicles.

Site 2:
Kipper + 3
60wag + 1
Sandstorm + 3

= 3 vehicles & 10 people

Site 3:
nakman + 3
txanm + 3
Fishy +1 (maybe)

= 3 vehicles & 10 people

Cheeseman? Slavin? Romer? you guys still interested? If we get site #1 then that would take the pressure off a couple of you maybe guys. Nay post up when you can, thanks!

Sweet! thanks, Nay, that's huge man! So basically if you've posted up at this point that you're interested, then there is more than likely a space for you. If you haven't posted up any interest, then you should probably consider the run full- PM me for any last minute pleas, or questions, etc.

Fishy I penciled you into our camp, talking with Brent doesn't sound like he can swing it now. And remember those camps are just placeholders, I really don't care who camps with who, as long as we keep the numbers balanced. This is going to be awesome.

Here are some things you should consider bringing:
- Warm clothes- jeans, sweat shirts, a good hat, a real jacket. lots of socks, some long underwear even.
- Warm sleeping bags- we've found that "double bags" works a lot better for the kids (and us) than just one warm bag. Plus we have a lot of extra cheap bags... YMMV, but plan on 30° nights.
- Extra head lamps- it gets dark early, and usually when we're just starting to have fun. :D
- At least one pair of real shoes. Not sandals, not flip-flops, not old Crocs®, but actual shoes that can actually hike and not contribute to falling down.

Here are some things you probably don't need:
- Awnings, and 10x10 pop-ups. Even though this is the desert, we're camping in one of the most protected areas ever, so no matter brutal sun or total downpour we'll have significant natural shelter. save the space.
- Firewood, dog food, fireworks... yup none of that is allowed in the NP. But you knew that.

Not a comprehensive list, we can worry about food & stuff later, but wanted to get a few things out that have been on my mind.

Our plan, as of today, is leave City Market in Moab at 9:30 Friday morning 10/19. For most that means leave Denver Thursday night and camp/stay somewhere. We'll be on all the Colorado Connection repeaters throughout the drive, and of course one of the RS simplex frequencies throughout the run for communication. I suspect someone else will have a CB. Post up any other ideas or suggestions or questions or whatever. :thumb:

Chris: no bikes, just hikes. let me know if you want a hand with the radio? you should get new tires too  :)

Romer: you're good either way, we'll have extra room if you don't go but I don't have anyone else beating down my door for a spot, so no worries, hope you can make it.

Only 2 weekends left to prepare... I'm getting excited here. I'm thinking the Thule box will be coming out for additional storage up top, still need to strap the screens to the head rests and I think we're good to go.

The plan is leave Moab City Market at 9:30 Friday morning 10/19.

If you can't do that, you need to let me know. Otherwise I will see you there... we may try to leave around lunch time on Thursday now, possibly just drive all the way to Moab and hotel it. I know what it's like to leave though, and the last thing I want is for someone to be waiting around still in Denver for someone else who can't pull it together. So get out of town as soon as you can, look for others on the road and on the air, but ultimate plan is let's meet in Moab on Friday morning- so simple.

Soon, soon! I have the 40 running great, drove it around the block for the first time this past weekend, but now i'm in 9mm brake line hell. started off just replacing a leaky wheel cylinder, and that is cascading into a whole new brake setup, and now i'm contemplating finding disk brake font axle, and probably rear axle too, and another new master cylinder... know anyone that has mid-70's fj40 axles?

Just out of curiosity, do you guys take 95 south from hite a bit, and then cut east on Woodenshoe until you get up to elk mountain in the abajos, and then drop down into beef basin from the south?

Caribou Sandstorm

Yes and no. Last fall's Maze run, our plan was to take Wooden shoe to Hite but we ran into 1 1/2 feet of snow so we just hoped on 95 from Elk Ridge and headed to Hite via highway.

I plan on dropping out to Hite from Canyonlands and then hoping off 95 at Elk Ridge and yes dropping into Beef Basin.

IMHO you don't miss much on wooden shoe. The very end toward hite is desert, the middle is all oak scrub and closer to elk ridge it's high alpine. a couple of decent views of dark canyon and that's it. I expected more so I don't think you miss much other than having to be on a dirt road.

Sounds good Chris, we'll be listening for you. Hey if you need any supplies from town brought down let me know, as we're hitting City Market on Friday morning. 9:00 to be exact, leaving at 9:30... :)

As for food the rest of the weekend, folks I think the plan is keep it somewhat simple: Friday night cook up whatever, we'll likely do some burgers or brats. On Saturday there's time to cook breakfast if you want.. Saturday lunch will likely be sandwiches out of your truck. Saturday night we're going to boil some seafood fondue-style.. so if you want to bring other random hunks of meat to toss in, that could be fun. And this group tends to prefer a constant grazing of chips & salsas throughout.. Sunday morning try to keep it quick, as we have a lot of ground to cover that day. Also remember there's a picnic table at each site, so for some that's one less thing to bring.

One thing to note with this camping is we have to pack out everything.. you're not going to be able to burn a paper plate, or pour bacon grease in the fire, for example, as there are no fires. So sometimes that means a little more prep work at home can be of benefit later on, so you don't have as much stuff to deal with out there. Spend more time enjoying the area, less time doing dishes.. ;)

Spend more time enjoying the area, less time doing dishes.. ;)

I am soo glad you mentioned that, will be cooking bacon in advance.

Thanks for the offer on supplies. Will figure out and let you know.

Also, I have that kelty awning that fits in small tent bag, in case you don't want to haul your ez-up.

We will bring cheese fondue also!

On the bubble about biscuits and gravy for breakfast, might stick to pancakes and I always make enough for anyone that wants some.

Remember kids, we'll be hiking the Joint Trail on Saturday... which is an amazing adventure for kids of all ages. It's ok to start getting excited now...

Route change for us. Had to work today up to 1pm, so just rolled into Onion creek at about 8:45pm.

We have the first BLM site on the right just passed the group sites.

Might stay here tomorrow night, as well.

Must have been that long coffee stop in Vail. ;)

So are you guys skipping the drive to the Dollhouse?

Yeah I got a text earlier Matt, the Dollhouse will have to be another time. As you know it's a big haul to get out there, definitely a good call!

And I'll see everyone at City Market tomorrow- looks like we've got a great group- 6 trucks (3 100's and 8 80's), and 3 camp sites. The adventure starts for us in a couple hours... see you in the desert!

Sounds good, we are here in Moab. Going to do a hike in Arches and see if there is a dirt route back to Onion Creek.

I moved my Doll house res to Sat. Nov 12 ..

Tim it was an awesome trip! I would put it as the best camping trip to date!

I have made a mental note though to always grab two beers when we take off on a hike & not just one. Always be prepared to stay the night out there!

Here are a few pictures I got off my phone. I am not the best picture taker & some are blurry.

Judy and I had a great time out there. I think it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Thanks Tim for making it happen.

This is Druid Arch. It was where we hiked to Saturday. It's a great trail with a lot of variety.
