I'm thinking of running this trail this week, and want to find out if you can go to the top of Mt. Bross. Trail Damage describes taking the trail to the summit of the mountain, but Wells' Guide to Colorado Backroads says that the "roads above Windy Ridge are private mining roads outside Pike National Forest: NO TRESPASSING". So which is right - can you run it to the summit?

Thanks,

Ed

Call Nancy with the city of Alma at 719-836-2712. She can probably put you in contact with someone in the know if she doesn't have the answer.

The top of Bross is private and considered closed to hikers/climbers looking to bag all the 14ers. As you might imagine, climbers doing the Decalibron occasionally run up and touch the top to "check it off" their list.

Learned a new word today: Decalibron.

The Decalibron is a four 14er peak loop outside of Alma, Colorado. It consists of Mount Democrat (14,148 feet), Mount Cameron (14,238 feet), Mount Lincoln (14,286 feet), and Mount Bross (14,172 feet).

I did Three of the four once with my Scouts about 7 or 8 years ago. Coming down Bross to Kite Lake is a steep shale drop and we were to tired to take that on. Now that is a tough day of hiking.

Yeah when I hear Decal LeBron I get a totally different idea...

edit: that's a pun, Matt. :p: j/k

Thanks for the info. If it's private then it's a no go for me. Time to look for another trail to run this week.

We drove up to the top of mount Bross last summer. Didn't see any signs along the way last August.

I thought that was resolved, Alma pays rent to the land owners to keep access open. The owners used to let people go up there but closed access because of the liability of someone getting hurt and thus suing. Alma apparently agreed to the arrangement to provide legal cover and reopen the summit.

I've done the Decalibron twice, and found that doing Bross first from Kite Lake seemed to go pretty well. For some reason everyone else always does Democrat first.

I think you are correct Dave. I think I read something similar on it before attempting to drive up last year. We decided to see if it was closed or if there were signs up, but didn't see any telling us to turn around.
I don't have any problem hiking a 14er but I do have a problem hiking on a road, so I only start hiking when the road ends!
