Great trip! There ended up being only 5 trucks on the run. Hopefully, we'll have a bigger turn out next year.

The weather held off for us, although it was a little windy. Fishy, JadeRunner, Old40Dog, MountainGoat, a buddy of mine who I call Big Country and a friend of his (Chad). It was Big Country's first trip with Rising Sun as he's new to Colorado. He and Chad had a blast and I expect them both to be Rising Sun's newest members in the near future. Chad started shopping around for a Toyota 4x4 as soon as he got home that night and Big Country is in the Toyota p/u, but he's on the hunt for a locked 80.

We ran Metberry first and stopped down by the river for lunch. I brewed up some hot coffee that was just the ticket for a long afternoon. Unfortunately, there was some trash left behind from whoever was down there last. A special thanks to Jaeden (littleMountainGoat) for all her hard work picking up the area!

We were back up the hill and on our way to Hackett by noon. MountainGoat turned left at the FS road and headed for home while the rest of us made a right and went to the Hackett trailhead. Hackett is quite a bit harder than Metberry, but probably still mild by most of your standards. It's near impossible to know where the Park/Teller county lines are and what is considered open/closed. By the time you realize you are nearing the river, and in Park County, there is no turning around until you're down the hill. I will be in touch with Matt Glass from Colorado Trail Patrol/Stay the Trail to talk about the lack of signage, access issues, and to pass along photos of the illegal river crossing area.

Honestly, the best part of the trail is the last mile before the river. If we could somehow convince Park County to totally block the river crossing but still allow access down to the river, it would be a great trail. People are clearly still crossing the river and driving over a cable on the far side.
We did find where the signs from 2009 were pulled out and off the trail. It took some real effort to get them out and moved.

We ended the day at 4pm. Just as it was getting dark and temps were dropping. No breakdowns, no issues..... just a great run. I did smack my rear bumper pretty hard going up (and down) Hackett Rock and broke the indicator markers, tabs and bent the brackets. It sits a little crooked and has some nice rock rash, but the hitch really saved it from tearing off completely. Time for a real bumper I guess. :hill:

I am in the process of writing an article for Toyota Trails and I'm saving some of the pics for that article. But... here's a bunch. Plus, I made a video for Youtube. I'll link that in a later post.

Thanks to those who came out to participate in the 1st Annual Run the Gulches Run. Here's to many more.

EDIT: I removed a few pics to ensure I had enough of what I wanted for the Toyota Trails article.

Thanks for leading Stan. And thanks for the burrito, hot drinks and taking all the pictures. Nicely done trail leader Fishy.

It's been over 10 years since I ran Hackett. But, Hackett rock and the rest of the trail sure seemed easy. I thought it would be eroded more from the fire.

That was cool you saw a bear.

That was a nice run. Thanks for putting it together Stan! Jaeden had a blast. After we started home she got all sad and when I asked her what was wrong she said, "I just miss Fishy." I stopped and we talked about whether we should go back and continue the run or go home and decorate the Christmas tree. After some agonizing she decided we should go trim the tree. :D This morning when she woke up she asked if we could go on the bumpy roads with my friends again today. Thanks to all for a great run and for making the only kid feel right at home!

Great pics and video Stan. Did you guys do Longwater, too, or just Hackett after I left?

She is as sweet as can be! The first thing Keagan asked me when I got home was "were there any other kids?" he was bummed when I told him yes. He loves yakking on the CB......He and Jaeden would have talked each others ears off! Next time.....

We only ran Hackett, it was near dark by the time we passed the Longwater Trailhead, and it was totally dark by the time we aired up and turned for home.

Looks like a great trip, Stan. Sorry I missed it. I really want to get down into that part of the canyon someday.

There's a gate at the bottom of Hackett Gulch, at least there was the last time I was there. That has been the turn-around point the last two times I've been there. The gate has always been closed for me.

Looks like a fun trip. Based on those pictures, it could have been summer time down there rather than a December trip. Big difference a day makes though - we were down in that area yesterday getting our Christmas tree and there was several inches of snow on the ground.
